Confidence is crucial. Our team suffered from a lack of self-esteem (playing-wise) the last 2 years. Especially last year. One possible reason for the dropoff in play, is that the players are bored and need a new challenge. Cupcake schedule was good just for everybody, including Ewing, to get their feet wet trying get this program back up and running. After beating a few teams easily, what is next? More cupcakes? These are 18-22 year olds now. Not shocking for complacency to kick in, knowing the game is in hand before it even starts. Hindsight is 20/20, so Ewing probably overdid it with the schedule. But again, can't change it now. The issue only comes into play if the team is borderline/on the bubble. I generally agree with this, but I also wonder whether our first three opponents were the weakest teams we played, not only because they were bad, but because they were missing multiple starters to injuries. So maybe those opponents made us look better than we actually are.

There is still a part of me that believes this year’s schedule was more a factor of when Ewing was hired and the deprioritization of the schedule versus all the other things Ewing had to do (whether intentional or unintentional). Maybe that is my hope to justify that this year’s schedule was a fluke or to give a pass.
As for PK80 I’m still upset about it but I have my personal biases because I had travel plans to attend the tournament. I’m willing to admit my biases cloud my judgment. Maybe if the tournament was at the end of the OOC schedule the decision would be different, but who knows.
Just glad some real competition is here because these cupcake games are not capturing my attention.
Edit: To bring this back to topic...I don’t see the issue with Goodman. He is right in his assessment of our schedule. Sure it seems a little like a weird obsession but he is not saying anything wrong.

"I don't see the issue with Goodman"....over the last 24 :
The majority of his tweets over the last 24 hours have been about Georgetown.

The schedule is what is it is and I am with Just Cos in guessing that Ewing was focusing on trying to stabilize the program didn't want to open with three early losses do dropped out of the tourney, and couldn't find enough mediocre teams to play. I may be wrong. .
I think there are three different reasons why it won't repeat next year and only one of them need to be true a) Ewing will decide when all is said and done it doesn't work - by "work" I mean it either doesn't allow him to develop a team, doesn't allow him to attract players, or creates too thin a margin for error to make the NcAAs. b) This isn't the 1980s and the money is bigger and GU is losing too much of it. These crappy attendance numbers and lack of fan interest is causing GU money. The university needs to generate more revenue from home games. c) If I was another league AD - if I were ANY of the other league ADs - I'd be furious over this. GU's horrible schedule may cost the league a bid this year. They are going sink everyone's RPI. The Big East is supposed to be a power conference and if you want to be in a power conference you can't do this. Sub in "Fox" for "Every other AD" on this point as well.
Team showed some promise in a tough loss. But the schedule can't repeat next year. They will need to change it.

There's a whole thread on the schedule, let's try to keep this one about how ridiculously obsessed Jeff Goodman is and about his blatant access journalism.

Please tell me you asked him : "Chris Mack - great coach or the greatest coach of all time?" Other questions to ask are what is it that you actually do at ESPN and how did they let go of a high quality journalist in Andy Katz and keep a troll like you on staff??? Who do you have pictures of in incriminating circumstances in the higher ups at ESPN/Disney??

Agree, Goodman kind of burnt the bride. No crossing back.

This definitely seems personal for some reason. Just for comparison - Buzz Williams' first 3 seasons at VT had NCSOS ranks of 348, 339, 342 (he's currently an impressive 318 this season). VT has to prep for the "best conference in the country", but I can't find a single Goodman article or tweet about what an embarrassment their scheduling is...hmmm...

Maybe he applied to GU and didn't get accepted, and holds a grudge...

He went to Arizona, so I don't think GU was even a realistic shoot for. 🙄

Ha. I see all the thanks but no thanks on Jeff Goodman interview. I hear ya. That said, this was a good discussion, IMO. Lots of straight talk, which isn't to say it's all glass-half-empty. Also talked Cuse-GU with Bobby Bancroft. Thanks!

Jeff goes out of his way to bash the program. It's a strange obsession of his. I wonder what the root of it is.
