“While student-athletes likely benefited from the courses, so did the general student body.” Also found that two key participants in these bogus courses did not cooperate with the investigation. So at least one message here is that if you are going to create bogus courses for athletes to use to remain eligible, make certain that these courses are also utilized by other members of the general student population. Then wait years until you are exposed and initiate a lengthy and largely invisible internal investigation, to ward off criticism. I guess it's hard to fault UNC for taking advantage of this horribly incompetent system of oversight. Just further lowers the ethical bar by which to judge the state of college sports.

They debased the educational experience so badly for everyone that we can't say it was a student athlete issue...

MOD REMINDER: There is an ongoing thread solely devoted to UNC shredding their institutional academic integrity here. Please direct further commentary there and keep this thread on topic about the Feds' NCAA recruiting investigation.

My fault, Dan. Posted my comment today in the wrong thread. "It shan't happen again."

My fault, Dan. Posted my comment today in the wrong thread. "It shan't happen again." No worries - just wanted to make sure: 1) people know the thread exists on the other board and 2) we don't mix types of popcorn-assisted car wreck viewing.

The guy who administered the polygraph was hired by Pitino and his lawyers. Not exactly a neutral.

The guy who administered the polygraph was hired by Pitino and his lawyers. Not exactly a neutral. Polygraphs are typically not admissible in court, and of questionable reliability. This is nothing more than a PR move.

Out of the coaches caught up in this scandal, Jim Larrañaga is the biggest surprise. Not the U itself who's athletics program always seemed to play fast and loose with the rules as if they were more of a suggestion, but Coach Larrañaga himself doesn't seem like the slimey salesmen Calapari/Pitino type. We will see I hope...

Could see Villanova re-enter the picture and make him a priority even if he has to sit out his freshman season.

Could see Villanova re-enter the picture and make him a priority even if he has to sit out his freshman season. You have to wonder whether any of these recruits who seem to be the ones described in the charges will run into eligibility/amateurism problems. If there's clear evidence that they accepted cash, they're not eligible under NCAA rules, right? I'd think that a lot of programs would be a little nervous about taking and playing them.
