Ladies lost 1-0. They outplayed WVA but couldn't find the back of the net. They looked really good.

Tough start but great experience for them ladies. These are the types of teams they will need to beat later this fall.

I watched a lot of it on Fox Sports Go, and it was mind boggling that they announcer kept talking about how WV was on the front foot. Yeah, at worst they played them quite evenly. But, I thought they should have tied.

But, I thought they should have tied. Yeah, I only got to watch bits and pieces (and on mute at that), but from what I saw, it was very evenly contested. Which... if WVU really is the #1 team in the country, then we are very close to it. Last year, Stanford came in and made the Hoyas look like they didn't belong on the same field. The team improved a ton over the course of the season and peaked at the right time, but even so, the gap was noticeable and jarring and I frankly did not like our chances against them in the tournament (thanks Santa Clara!). I'll be very interested to see how the rematch in Palo Alto goes this season. Nothing such feeling after this one. Would love to catch the 'Eers again - in Morgantown, in Orlando, wherever.

Nice way to handle lesser opponent on home ground.

Occasionally maddening, ultimately satisfying win. Hard to say at the moment how much to take away from it. Natural bit of an emotional letdown for the Hoyas, from opening the season against the #1 team in the country to facing an obviously inferior foe. Meanwhile, GW is always amped up to play their aspirational rivals, and with their Friday opener at Delaware cancelled, this was their season opener. The first 20-25 minutes seemed to reflect this disparity, as the Hoyas made a number of uncharacteristic (for last year's club, anyway) mistakes in the back that led to some real dangerous opportunities for GW, which they failed to convert. Schechtman definitely had to work a bit for the clean sheet, but she was well up to the task.
Eventually the tide turned, however, as the Hoyas (mostly) cut down on the mistakes and started playing their game, using their superior skill and athleticism to dominate possession and put the ball in dangerous places. The half ended 0-0, though, because the final touch was lacking and in particular the ball would land near goal with no one making a run into the box to deposit it.
That finally changed a few minutes into the second half, when Amanda Carolan broke down the right flank on a counterattack after some nervy defending in the Hoyas box. Freshman Jenna Menta streaked toward the middle of the 18 and Carolan struck an absolutely perfectly weighted cross past three - count 'em, three - GW defenders for Menta to run onto. The freshman forward did well to push it past the onrushing keeper and open her career account with the Hoyas.
A quarter of an hour later, it was Rachel Corboz making the run up the middle after Casey Richards caught up to the ball just outside the six before it crossed the endline. Richards sent it back across the middle toward the spot, and Rachel slotted it home. The Hoyas had some other chances that went wanting while GW was still game, but they converted enough to make it a moot point.
Toward the end of the game, the Colonials more or less threw in the towel and were punished with two late goals - I suspect their coaches will be using this as a teachable moment about playing through the whistle. Setting aside the fact that the GW players were dragging by this point, very nice ball placement by Richards to go far corner just out of the keeper's reach and by Carolan to smash one near-corner past the goalie on a tight angle. Lots of other nice shots, a couple on frame. I particularly enjoyed Menta's cross that sailed toward the top of goal and forced the GW keeper to awkwardly paw it over the crossbar. Put the ball on frame and good things can happen!
18-0 advantage in corners is one of those goofy statistics that tells you all you need to know about how this one went.

This contest was a total dominance. The problem, which could have been foreseen preseason, is that we have trouble netting the ball on occasion. Look at what we lost from last year---Marina Paul, a defender, and then two forwards. We lost a whole lot of goal production. This team is solid on the back line, in the midfield especially, and is finding its way up front. It just took a while to do so today, but came around in the end. What is good to see is that we did not have one dominant scorer, but four, three of whom are underclass women. Very nice. The offense will take some time in the making, but some new faces are looking very, very good.
Be patient. This is a solid, senior team that has been back filled very well. The young offense will come around. Stanfurd will be a big, big test. They took down Marquette at home 0-4 on Friday night. We get them on the road.

Delaware game went about as one would expect - Blue Hens had at least 10 behind the ball at all times and hoped to pull off a counter. The Hoyas did a much better job of sending crosses in from the flanks in this game, and they had some players making runs, but there was just tons of traffic in the box. The lone goal, not surprisingly, came off of a set piece, with Corboz taking a free kick just outside the 18 and skipping it on the ground, which seemed to catch Delaware off guard. Chloe Knott made a great run and held off a defender to knock it past the keeper.
When teams turtle, set pieces will become even more important and drawing them will probably be one of the better tactical options. Also, Schechtman is absolutely destroying the ball with her drop kicks - 10 to 15 yards past midfield on the regular. If they'd let her, she'd be the starting punter on the football team. Quite helpful for shortening the field and staying on the front foot going forward.

Oh yeah, absolutely - if anything, I'd say the team is farther along than I thought it would be, given the need to replace two extremely experienced defenders in Marina Paul and Corey Delaney and two scoring machines in Crystal Thomas and Grace Damaska. There's still plenty of good experience and quality in the back, and having Rachel Corboz as the field general in the middle will help the newer offensive pieces gel more quickly. Even up front, though, Carolan and Farrell have plenty of games under their belt and goals to their credit already. Real solid outing against the Loyola Greyhounds today, coached by former Georgetown assistant Naomi Meiburger. Unlike many other coaches, she is not one to opt for turtle mode against the Hoyas, which is what made today's 5-0 scoreline possible. The Hounds came out aggressive at the start and forced Schechtman into a good save on an early header, but it was really nothing doing for the rest of the day. A comprehensive working over by the Hoyas, and good game action for some of the younger players in preparation for the team's upcoming trip out to the west coast. Lots of former players in attendance today, including Daphne Corboz. Great to see their continued investment in the program - always a good sign! Team looks pretty locked in. On to new #1 Stanford!

The balance on the schedule is very nice. A tough game, a couple of easier opponents, a tough game again. Not sure Stanfurd is #1 still after losing to Florida 2-3, but regardless they are a very good side scoring multiple goals against Wisconsin and Marquette, the latter a preseason #3 rating in the Big East. This will be a great test on the road in a great soccer facility on another beautiful campus. Then we throttle back to San Jose State and St. Francis before meeting always tough Rutgers at Shaw. Just like last season Coach Nolan is setting this team up well with a great preseason schedule to invite later exposure to the tourney.
Many new faces on the pitch today which not only gave the Hoyas experience deep down the chart, but also helps with futures and any potential injuries down the line. The coaching staff gets a very good look at players under fire and the players get needed touches against opponents other than their teammates. Very good start to the season. The score aside, we also played WVU straight up. I look forward to this team being backfilled very well, with the possibility of another nice run in the post season. Go Hoyas.

Another big test on the horizon. Friday Sept 1 on the road against the Stanfurd Trees in Palo Alto. Gametime 4:00PM PST. Temperature about 95 degrees, humidity 27% (high for the West Coast), precipitation O.....
Should be a good one. Beautiful soccer facility on a suburban campus. This will be a great test for our team as it is coming together very nicely.
Go Hoyas, Beat the 'furd.

Either this site is not Georgetown, or there is little to no interest in G'town women's soccer....C'mon this is a team that won the Big East for the first time, went to the Final Four for the first time, and no interest when the team travels 2500 miles to play top 4 or so Stanfurd.
So you have a men's BB team that may or may not be good with Coach Ewing. A FB team that is not the center of the world. A men's soccer team that has been good, may be good, but was so-so last year. Is there any NCAA interest on the Hill?
Lonely, when you are not a grad, and posting with yourself. School spirit dead and gone?
