This meet will be held in Sacramento starting June 22. In addition to selecting the national champions, it will serve as a qualifier meet for the Worlds to be held in London. There are qualifying standards to get into the meet and there are standards for being selected for the Worlds meet. Joe, Darren, and Scott have the qualifier for running in the meet, and Joe and Darren both have met the Worlds standard:
Men’s 800 (1:45.90) Time Athlete Venue Date 1:43.60 Clayton MURPHY Torrance (USA) 15.04.2017 1:44.63 Donavan BRAZIER Tempe (USA) 08.04.2017 1:45.02 Drew WINDLE Marietta (USA) 19.05.2017 1:45.12 Isaiah HARRIS Charlottesville (USA) 21.04.2017 1:45.23 Erik SOWINSKI Marietta (USA) 19.05.2017 1:45.68 Shaquille WALKER Marietta (USA) 19.05.2017 1:45.71 Devin DIXON Columbia (USA) 13.05.2017 1:45.73 Joseph WHITE Eugene (USA) 09.06.2017 1:45.82 Jesse GARN Marietta (USA) 19.05.2017 1:45.87 Edose IBADIN Nashville (USA) 10.06.2017 N/A Ryan MARTIN NACAC champion
Men’s 3,000 steeplechase (8:32.00) Of note in this event: two of the U.S.’s three 2016 Olympians — Donn Cabral and Olympic silver medalist Evan Jager — do not yet have the standard. The good news is that the steeple is rarely super-tactical at USAs: only once in the past 37 years has the winner failed to break 8:32. To finish in the top three in Sacramento, chances are you’ll have to run faster than 8:32. Plus, even if they don’t get it at USAs, they will easily get it somewhere else. Result Athlete Venue Date 8:11.82 Hillary BOR Roma (ITA) 08.06.2017 8:14.46 Andrew BAYER Roma (ITA) 08.06.2017 8:18.55 Stanley Kipkoech KEBENEI Portland (USA) 11.06.2017 8:30.28 Donnie COWART Nashville (USA) 10.06.2017 8:30.36 Daniel HULING Portland (USA) 11.06.2017 8:30.86 Michael JORDAN Nashville (USA) 10.06.2017 8:31.08 Darren FAHY Eugene (USA) 9.06.2017 8:31.17 Dylan BLANKENBAKER Eugene (USA) 9.06.2017

On the women's side alumnae Rachel Schneider and Emily Infeld have the standards in the 1500m and 10000m, respectively:

During the Nationals the National Junior meet will be held at the same venue. Running in that are three rising sophomores and one incoming recruit.
In the 1500m Jack Salisbury is entered. Jack did not run much during the 2016-17 seasons. In the 3000m Steeplechase keeping in alignment with Steeple U. are Eion Nohilly and Matt Bouthillette. In the 800m recruit Rey Rivera will be running.

Bad news on the women's side: Rachel Schneider has a foot injury, which has prevented her from running for three weeks. Consequently, she will not be running at the Nationals.

Emily Infeld has been ranked 2nd in the 10000m by flotrack:
10K 1 Molly Huddle 10K 2 Emily Infeld 10K 3 Emily Sisson 10K 4 Amy Cragg 10K 5 Kim Conley 10K 6 Shalane Flanagan 10K 7 Natosha Rogers 10K 8 Erin Finn
and 4th in the 5000m
5K 1 Shannon Rowbury 5K 2 Molly Huddle 5K 3 Shelby Houlihan 5K 4 Emily Infeld 5K 5 Kim Conley 5K 6 Emily Sisson 5K 7 Karissa Schweizer 5K 8 Natosha Rogers
It is very hot in Sacramento now with Thursday even hotter. Since the 10000m is on Thursday, it may be a blood bath. At least the race is at 8pm, so Sacramento cools in the evenings and mornings. Anyway, it will probably be a very tactical race and Emily has a good kick, but she has not raced much this year.

Emily Infeld is also running the 10000m tomorrow. If she makes the team, I can't her doubling back in the 5000m, considering the brutal weather. They have already changed the starting time of most races tomorrow; temperature predicted to be 108. The women's 10000m will start at 9:27 pm, instead of 8:08 pm. Joe White was in the third heat of the men's 800m. Also in the heat was Clayton Murphy, medal winner at Rio. The top two plus six time qualifiers went into the semis today. Joe was running last at the bell, but slowly began picking off runners and at the end it was Murphy and Joe. The way Joe looked, very fast and very smooth, he might have been able to beat Murphy if this were a final. So Murphy and Joe go on to the semis, and since this was the slowest heat, nobody else in the heat went. Being in the slowest heat helps to get ready for the semis.

Emily Infeld did it again and made an American team for the World championships in London. She was running 4th for most of the race as a pack of six separated themselves from the field. Emily's teammate, Shalane Flanagan, controlled the race for most of the race. Molly Huddle, American record holder was in 2nd most of the time. With about three laps to go, the racing began with Huddle imposing her strength and speed and she opened up a gap of the now four runners remained in contention for the three spots at Worlds. With a lap to go the two Emilys were fighting it our for 2nd place and our Emily unleashed her potent kick and ran away with Emily Sisson, former Providence runner. In fact, the top three had connections to the Big East, as Huddle graduated from Notre Dame.

Today Scott and Darren run their heats in the steeplechase and Joe runs his semifinal (top four in each semi go to the finals). Joe was in this position last year in the Olympic trials and he dropped out of the race after one lap.

Quick Take: After another imperfect spring, Emily Infeld is going back to Worlds and looking to run fast this summer Infeld, who, in case you forgot, is the reigning bronze medalist at Worlds, is a huge talent and made the U.S. team in 2015 (where she won bronze) and 2016 despite having to overcome injuries before or during those seasons. Once again, Infeld was banged up this spring as she rolled her ankle and battled a nagging hip issue and she and coach Jerry Schumacher chose not to risk it by throwing her in any races (though she did do some work as a pacer at Payton Jordan). Infeld says that she’s feeling healthy now and looking forward to getting out there a few more times between now and London. “I really wanna race this summer!” Infeld said. “So I think I’m gonna do a few races after this, which I am super-psyched about. I feel like the last few years I’ve done like two, three track races. It’s been a bummer. I love racing.”

Friday at the races did not treat the Hoyas well. First Scott Carpenter had to stop with a little over a lap to go. He said that he was having trouble with his achilles and also probably the weather. Darren Fahy drifted back during the race. It was a long season for the collegians and maybe a race too much for the Hoyas.

Joe finished with a good time, but only the top four from each heat go to the finals. Joe was 6th, almost 5th in a time of 1:46.20.
