I like him and think he'll be a good player. But not too surprised. Didn't get the feeling he had legit interest in us and vice versa.
Also (could definitely be unrelated) I've seen him repost Mac a couple times on Instagram, so i'm sure Mac leaving didn't help

I don’t get the vibe he was a priority. But something is deeply wrong with our recruiting. We’re missing out on transfers we shouldn’t be, and rather than targeting local kids that we have a shot at landing (not necessarily Brizzi) we are making five stars we have no shot in hell at landing our primary targets.

Unfortunately, this reinforces the perception that Ewing (and staff) can't get local talent. This year's recruiting didn't send a positive message to HS/AAU coaches in the region when they're asked where they want their kids to go.

I get your point but using a kid who doesn't have a single school thats local to sway local kids is not a good point. Its like when people were mad at not getting Earl Timberlake when it was obvious he didn't want to play local. Once again, i get your point.

In Brizzi’s words: “Georgetown: I would be staying close to home and playing in the Big East. The Big East is a great conference.”
Seems like in the end he didn’t want to stay close to home, and if he wants to play in the Big East Villanova is currently a better option.
Honestly, I didn’t see this going anywhere when the Hoyas offered him like a day after Villanova did. Only chance at that point was him wanting to stay local or him really hitting it off with one of the coaches.

Not that it really matters at this point, but I’m pretty sure he lives in Warrenton now, not Monterey.

I see why Ewing is interested. The kid plays hard. Not sure of it but Ewing definitely going after kids who bust it over talent for the back half of the roster. Has a really nice jumper for a big kid.

But he’s also one of only seven 2021 recruits with a Villanova offer.

The benefit of chasing a local recruit is in theory getting in early before he blows up because you're on the ground and develop a relationship (and sure if they are determined to stay home it limits the competition). Offering the day after Nova isn't going to be where we win.

He also recently zoomed with Georgetown and has talked with head coach Patrick Ewing who has been very vocal in landing Smith. Ewing has pointed out that teaming up with future Hoya, Tyler Beard could be very scary for opponents in the Big East.
But, according to Malachi, his recruitment is wide-open and programs continue to take a look at him.
As far as other programs, he’s completed virtual visits with Rutgers, Georgetown, and many other of his finalists. He would love to take in-person campus visits but of course with the COVID-19 pandemic that is currently unlikely. I think Smith really wants to visit programs but if he is unable to I believe a decision could come sooner.

2. GEORGETOWN
For a while now, there has been a lot of behind-the-scenes talk that Patrick Ewing and the Hoyas have positioned themselves well. Mohammed’s guardian is from the area and the opportunity to come in and play a starring role in the backcourt is there. They have done a good job of getting in early with players like Mohammed. The question is whether they can get the recruitment of a guy like him across the finish line?

This class is lining up to be full of potential big time landings and the start to see whether or not we can land on that potential (not end all be all but still a clear mark) is in over an hour. I can't tell if I should be excited or not, because I don't want to be let down.

With Quincy Allen committing to Colorado, we've now whiffed on Allen, Benny Williams, and Ike Cornish in a year where any one of these LOCAL kids would have almost certainly been able to play at least 25 mins/game with Pickett graduating and no clear starter at SF.
I don't even know what to say anymore

I don't even know what to say anymore It's clear, isn't it? We have zero good reputation in the DMV hoops scene. Whether that is unfounded or not is up for debate. There are things that can be done but unfortunately it may be too late by the time it happens (especially if the COVID hiring freezes include the BBall program).
