At one of the nation’s top basketball programs, Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha, teammates Hunter Dickinson and Earl Timberlake have formed a formidable duo. The seven-foot tall Dickinson has manned the paint while Timberlake has provided a tough and athletic presence on the wing. For their efforts, they are ranked No. 28 and No. 29 in the 2020 Rivals150. On Monday, they both added offers from Roy Williams and the North Carolina Tar Heels... As for Timberlake, I joked during the spring that he’s the best heavyweight boxing prospect who I have ever seen play high school basketball. The guy is ripped, plays with tremendous physicality and if anybody has ever had the guts to challenge him to a fight, I doubt he’s lost many. But, Timberlake is also a pretty skilled basketball player. He gets to the rim, he makes smart passes, he rebounds and he’s a big-time defender who can switch from point guards all the way to power forwards because of his athletic gifts. Timberlake has taken a pair of official visits himself – to Providence and South Carolina – and just two weeks ago told us that Alabama, Seton Hall and Pitt were under consideration for visits. In addition to the UNC offer, he’s also added offers from NC State, Miami and Cal, so his recruitment has really taken off. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/three-point-play-north-carolina-caleb-murphy-hs-team-camps

The top 30 wing took early official visits to Providence and South Carolina and hasn't had a problem finding quality college suitors. Alabama, Georgetown, Louisville and Pitt are just a few others that have invested time in recruiting him, but the past few weeks have been a blur for him. He did an awesome job of boosting his stock this spring on the Nike EYBL circuit, due to his size, ball skills and toughness in the backcourt. However, his time at the NBPA Top 100 Camp - and then during the first high school camp session last weekend - skyrocketed his recruitment. Cal and Miami came in with offers, but the one received by North Carolina could really change things. Timberlake has never been in a rush with things and he is one of the more even-keeled kids around, but receiving a UNC offer might have blown his recruitment wide open - with no end in sight. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/evans-seven-2020-recruitments-that-took-surprising-turns-in-june

Having a school in a talent-rich area is always a double-edged sword. For some, the desire to get away from home is an insurmountable obstacle. From a life perspective, I personally think it's usually a better idea to get away from home. It's difficult to fault someone for wanting to spread his wings a bit.

Good Luck to the young man. Not sure why there was never connection with the Hoyas, but I would think Timberlake will have a very good college career. He is certainly a physical specimen!!

Glad it's not Seton Hall or Providence I'm glad we don't have to play him at least twice a year, but overall its better for the conference if top tier guys like this come and raise the talent level. Makes the Big East a more attractive destination for other recruits.

Makes the Big East a more attractive destination for other recruits. I usually try to stay out of these particular debates, but have to agree with this. There is an epidemic of kids from the DMV, and the northeast more generally, who are infatuated with the ACC and view it as a cut above the Big East (including Georgetown). Perpetuation of that mindset is much more detrimental to Georgetown's chances of ever winning a national title than PC or Hall getting a good player would be. A bunch of young kids in the area look up to a guy like Timberlake, see him picking a mid-level ACC school over the Big East, and think that's the thing to do if they have the opportunity. There are tons of examples through the years. We've known for a while we weren't going to get Timberlake (for whatever reason), but I want to get the next Timberlake, ie. Top 50 kids from the area, especially in the WCAC. And I think seeing kids they look up to go to the Big East would be a lot more helpful toward that goal than seeing him go to a mid-tier ACC school is.

Personally, I'd rather not see DMV kids go to other Big East schools. Maybe it's just PTSD from seeing Nova win it all with half their roster being from Maryland But I see what you mean

When we were good, we wanted the league to land the best. Hoping good players don’t go to our competitors is a loser’s mentality. You want to play the best. Maybe, that’s why Timberlake went where he did.

Maybe, that’s why Timberlake went where he did. I agree... I want our competitors to have good players so we can play against the best. I also want to (one day) own the DMV in recruiting. Those aren't mutually exclusive. I want the big east to have talent, but i would prefer if it's not dmv talent
