In my mind, I can't separate individual development from team success. The 2008-09 team had three McD AA starters (Monroe, Freeman and Wright) plus Summers (5* and #23 recruit per Rivals). Lost in first round of the BET and the NIT. Team might have been better if the coach just rolled the ball out and let them play rather than the inane system that we ran then (and more or less continue to run now). That team also the following year reached the BET only to lose in the 1st Rd of the NCAA's to Ohio... Still do not understand how you have that much talent for 2 years and fail to win a game in the NIT's or NCAA's That team wasn't that strong and had inherent weaknesses. 3 McD AA starters don't tell the whole story. For all of his great passing ability, Monroe was still a big man. And he wasn't a physical presence inside that the Hoyas needed for success. Wright was a guard who could dribble penetrate, but could not finish at the rim consistently. Freeman was a good player. All 3 were defensive liabilities. All 3 weren't the most athletic. That era was a wake-up call for III. They were heralded offensive players. As we see this year, just offense wasn't going to cut it. Is why III started recruiting guys like Lubick , Moses Ayegba, and Trawick. Not the greatest offensive threats, but physically tough, gritty, defensive guys that the Monroe-Freeman-Wright era lacked.

And it actually worked well through 2013. We had elite-level defense in 2012 and 2013. But then it all came apart after the rules changes.

This is a pretty good thread with good analysis but I will say one thing that fans often misjudge when it comes to players. Don't confuse high usage with success. Just because you put up numbers doesn't mean that you are successful. It just means you are better than your teammates. Most of the player by player analysis was pretty fair. That being said Georgetown is a second tier recruiting program that only has 3 NCAA wins in the past 10 years. JT3 has done less with more than almost any program in the past 10 years and definitely of any coach that is still at the same school.
