Oh well. I guess having ties to relatives wasn't as strong as some thought? On to the next one!

Good luck to Cole but to be honest, I don't see that UNC team being great next season unless they get another big recruit/transfer. I think he's going for exposure at this point rather than FF run.

Wouldn't it be something if Coach and team have a better NCAA run than Roy and UNC?

We recently checked out two PGs to fill a need next season. Don’t tell me Pat didn’t know that Cole was going elsewhere.

I was amused by, but also appreciated, some of the optimism in this thread, I am so happy this decision has finally been made public and we, as fans, can all move on to more realistic recruiting targets like Ewing already had. There was never a doubt where this kid was headed. He basically admitted this when he discussed waiting on current players to declare, aka Coby White.

I was surprised to hear Cole is the highest rated recruit in the Roy Williams era. Let that sink in a little. Even a blue blood like UNC doesn’t always have their pick of the top top guys. Yet Roy’s track record at UNC has had multiple FF trips and titles.
Wish him the best but happy to know we have a solid team next year and a system that is appealing to this generation of recruits.

Is it appealing? Still waiting to see a big win on the recruiting front. Our freshman class was better than expected and we landed Wahab but I'm talking about a well known big time recruit. I look at Memphis and see the big time recruits that they got or have showed interest in the program. Not seeing the same here just yet.

ESPN covered it. Does FOX ever cover these announcements? Our friends at FOX need to cover lots of these. We need more viewers at FS1. People watch these things?

Unless you're willing to pay or have very strong AAU ties like Penny, its going to be tough to land top tier recruits without first proving something. That's why a fair chunk of people were saying to be patient until the 2020/2021 classes. Thats when the young guys Pat has actually had a chance to build a relationship with are really starting to make their decisions.

Guess what i meant to say is that it's hard even for blue bloods, yet they are still able to build programs with great (but not Top-Top) recruits.
Memphis is an anomaly IMO... you have Penny who is 120% connected to the AAU circuit through his coaching. No better platform to start from w/ regard to recruiting. We'll see how his coaching proves out. Could be a Josh Pastner situation...

I agree I think the 2020 class is the real barometer to our progress. At this point I would prefer a transfer so more scholarships are available for 2020. Too late IMO to get a HS recruit as we don't seem to be involved with any great 2019 recruits.

I look at Memphis and I'm pretty suspicious about how an AAC school that hasn't made the tournament for five years is drawing in top 25 recruits. Hiring a AAU coach to do an AAU player grab does not seem like a sustainable formula for building a program, and I'm pretty skeptical that's a process that would stay above board. I really don't understand the expectation that we would be drawing top 25 recruits. What would draw them?

I think all along Cole indicated that he wanted the ball in his hands, he wants to be a point guard at this level and in the NBA. We already have a point guard. The day James Akinjo signed with us was the day that determined that Cole wasn’t coming here. Just fine by me.

I realize their roster is depleted, but UNC has had tons of success over the last several years, and they're the safe bet. You can never turn away that type of talent, though. Had he been willing to come it would've worked out just fine.

I would have loved to have added Cole purely from a talent standpoint and let the guard rotation play itself out, but while I dont think anyone is surprised by the UNC choice, a small part of me does think this will help the development of Mackinjo. James can focus on being a 30+ minute a game pure PG and Mac can focus on being a shooting guard. Not to mention - if you dont think both of them didn't have an eye on this AM's announcement, then you dont know their competitive natures. Keeping those chips firmly planted on their shoulders will help with their freshman to sophomore summer grind.
Best of luck to Cole and his family. Next season for the Hoyas should still be A LOT of fun!

Had he been willing to come it would've worked out just fine. Not saying it wouldn’t have worked out just fine. It would have been terrific, I think. I am saying that if Cole was looking at his development as a pure point guard, it’s UNC, they have a hole. 35 minutes a night at the point. Not with the Hoyas, the kind of minutes he wants at the point just wouldn’t be there for him. Believe me I would have loved seeing him here....
