Coaching D-1 athletes and teaching students in a classroom require different motivational techniques. Pat has nothing to apologize for IMHO. And I respect your opinion.

On another note does anyone know if Derrickson’s nose was actually broken in the DePaul game? If so was he ever fitted for a plastic mask? Even if th nose was not broken, a blow that caused him to bleed profusely like that would take more than 2 days to completely heal. Maybe his limited time in the Creighton blowout was due to staff trying to protect him from further injury. Could've been.

[ Oh, Ranch, MD coasts all the time defensively. He should be hands down our best player, and an All-BE lock. Too often in the past, he’s disappeared, largely because his intensity and focus lags. Ewing sees how good he can be and is pushing him to greatness. The next big leap he can make is in rebounding, anticipation and attention to detail on the defensive end. He’s still a very marginal defender. Disagree, Smokey, just haven't seen Marcus coasting much at all this year. Part of that is his improvement and part of that is Ewing's cattle prods. The irony, of course, after watching the painful Creighton loss, is that there are several players on the team who, compared to MD, are making many more mistakes, poor decisions, and giving inconsistent effort. Yup.

This is some straight up BS. Few days later the media puts Marcus back out there, how in the hell can the kid concentrate on basketball. All of this is off of him shooting off of one leg because he thought the shot clock was winding down. MD had 14 pts. before the half. Ended up with 24. He was trying to win the coach's first Big East game. Why would you scold a player like this. We know all coach's have their own reasons for what they but there's a time and place for everything!!! Who said Marcus was fragile? Read the article to comprehend. The title is misleading and putting Marcus back out there. How do you think if he were to see this article and he's trying to concentrate on basketball and win tonight??? Ewing says the kid probably was rusty. Marcus says the coach probably thought he was under the weather as to why he only played 15 minutes and had 4 points. Which one is it? The kid made a so called mistake and it goes viral? deleted ...if this were another kid it wouldn't have went viral and we wouldn't still be talking about this if you catch my drift. No this doesn't make any sense. It's contradictory. Of all things Ewing says the kid was rusty. deleted Marcus has been conditioning and working on his game since he's been there. #comeonman.

It's not misleading. From the article: But from Ewing’s perspective, he is holding Derrickson to a higher standard, and that tough love is central to his coaching philosophy. On Tuesday, Ewing said he isn’t the type of coach to leave his two best players on the court, even against a tough opponent like Creighton, if they aren’t listening to him or playing well.

Derrickson and Govan didn't sign up for Pat. That said, they are both thriving this year. Upperclassmen should be held to a higher standard.

Great OB play for those who complain that we don't run any.

MD has been the MVP and most improved player of this team. The way he is rebounding and the way he is scoring down low is amazing. He is overpowering his defenders. You can see how he enjoys to play for Patrick. The total minutes he is playing per game, he is a BEAST.

My biggest concern on this team has not been MD. He comes to play day in and day out almost. Lately he has been out-shining everyone on the team. What we need to have happen is our 3 points need to start falling and for three or four guys to get hot at the same time.

Is there a more maddening player in America? My nominee for largest disparity between his best and worst.

Certainly off kilter tonight. Hope he is not wearing down, still a long way to go.

He's been fantastic most of the season, he's playing at an all BE level.

He's gone from option 4 (maybe 3 at times) to the best player on his team in less than a season. Not exactly a recipe for consistency.

Wheels came off when he fouled out last night. You could see other players looking confused, zero field goals after his departure and a number of plays where his fill-in just didn't execute. That says a lot about how important a guy is when it comes to the intangibles of leadership.

Mentioned in another thread that I thought his body language looked poor from the get-go last night. I know he doesn't show much emotion on the court, but to me it seemed like everything was getting to him last night - the missed shots in the lane, the missed FTs, wondering where the whistle was when he thought he got bumped, etc.

Maddening for opposing teams, yes.
