None of this is to dismiss any legitimate acts of racism at MU, but the video in the links above is much more disturbing to me. Somehow, I'm not surprised.

I think the attitudes and lack of awareness (among other things) shown in that video are much more troubling because they're more insidious and more easily dismissed. Denouncing the making a poop swastika is easy to do, and the evil of that act is readily apparent to everyone.

Melissa Click, the media professor, shut down her email and twitter accounts after the video surfaced. Reports indicate that she will be making a public statement later this afternoon. Can't wait to see how she tries to justify her actions in calling for the bullying of and interference with the student journalists. Maybe she doesn't believe in the First Amendment?

Somehow, I'm not surprised. I'm not surprised by your response. Guess we know each other's board posting personalities fairly well. For the record, I believe the students at Mizzou and Yale should rethink their positions. And for the record, I think you should too, if those students' and faculty members' actions are more disturbing to you than legitimate acts of racism. You and Todd Aiken, SMH.

Looks like I was too slow on my edit above. I think I was too imprecise in my language. I am not dismissing legitimate acts of racism, or saying that they are less disturbing that the protests that have sprung up in Columbia. In fact, I was trying to say that my disbelief at the actions and beliefs of the students and administrators at Mizzou should not be taken as saying that there were no actual acts of racism that occurred. However, I do think that some of the alleged racist acts were nothing of the sort (such as a person allegedly being struck by the vehicle of former president of the university system, or the video ambush of the same guy).

Sorry, next time I'll make sure to reflect the facts of the narrative you're pushing to a level satisfactory to you.

To take a more positive outlook on the whole thing, I have to applaud the members of the Missouri football team for understanding and exercising their power. I know a lot of people want sports and politics to stay separate, but you've got to fight with the weapons you've got.

Many people on this board went to Georgetown, which itself suffered an awful racist episode just this past February.

From what (admittedly little, just a few articles) I've read, such actions do not appear to be isolated at Missouri. The Yale student response is far more troubling to me. What was Georgetown's response to the incident you site? Is there discussion on the 37th and O board?

Were that the educated press could accurately and consistent enforce the meanings between these terms and not lump them all together:
Stereotype Prejudice Discrimination Bigotry Racism
Sadly, they do not.

Inasmuch as they do notunderstand the fundamental difference between news reporting and the expression of partisan opinion, how the hell do you expect them to split hairs on the above list of virtually indistinguishable words? Remember much of the media went to 'Cuse.

The Yale stuff was troubling, this Georgetown stuff is embarrassing. Christina Hoff Sommers is a joke - counter her on ideas, not by playing right into her professional victim game that keeps her relevant.
