While I certainly vastly prefer the first rendering that is your first choice, I'm almost at a point where I'd be OK with the second one if it means nothing worse/smaller. Because my biggest fear is that there is whole new design we are going to see that is a downgrade even from the second rendering you posted. Hopefully the "add seating" language is more about not making too many waves unnecessarily for the neighbors with "stadium" talk. I've always thought the "MSF" nomenclature was a bit about making the thing seem as low profile as possible and that "stadium" just freaked too many people out in a traffic/parking obsessed enclave.
The first rendering you posted is amazing. The second one is pretty good- which means it is still a MASSIVE upgrade. I think I've just been waiting so long I just want the dirt flying and I'm OK with the last rendering if it can get done soon and can accommodate at least 5-6K people and underneath that home side there are locker rooms, concession stands, real restrooms, etc. The last rendering is a bit of an unknown. What exactly is underneath the home stands/press box? I'm assuming there is the requisite facilities required of a real stadium vs just bleachers and porta johns.

The second doesn't include any locker room facilities (at least I don't think it does). I'm perfectly fine with no. 2, so long as that gets added along with the permanent restrooms and concessions. That's not asking for a ton. It doesn't seem to be an eyesore at all. Would I prefer a bit bigger? Yes. Would I prefer that the main side look even more "permanent?" Yes. But it's fine, with the caveats noted above. Given that the press release specifically said we were getting "game day locker rooms," I think we're likely to get something in between those two. That precise phraseology means to me that the rooms are going to be spartan (that is, the teams will have access to "real" locker rooms inside another building). But that's OK with me. And, Bin, I do think $10M - $15M will be tight, such that I don't think we should realistically hope for much more than this. I also don't share your optimism that there is fully $5M left (though I agree with hilltopper that presumably more can now be raised from others).

Look at the last rendering at bottom of this one. The corridor between the home stands and the press box/VIP suites seems to be pretty substantial. I always assumed under this corridor would be permanent restrooms and basic locker rooms. Just an assumption but I can't imagine they designed something this substantial and didn't think about restrooms and locker rooms when those two basic items are such a source of embarrassment to the university presently. While permanent locker rooms with training rooms, etc might be expensive- the use of the term "Game day" locker rooms could indicate something very basic- a room with benches, heat, toilets, a blackboard and sinks. That could be done along with fan restrooms for I would think not much at all. www.hoyafootball.com/history/proposed_stadia.htm

Would love to see some decorative brick or mason archways closing off the back of the home stands- but that's something that can be added at another time for improved ambiance.

And there are going to be locker rooms because, well, they say there will be. I have a hard time believing it's going to be two separate structures. It just wouldn't make any sense for any number of reasons (space; aesthetic; etc.). The cost issues will be very interesting. So much of the cost of these sorts of things generally is all the utility work, and the interior finishing inside a building. Some of both will be needed, but nowhere near the amount you typically need (like in the Thompson Center for example). Aside from the seats, we're talking about a true permanent structure involving bathrooms, locker rooms and probably some storage. None of which needs much creature comfort, at least at the outset. We're also presumably talking about a press box, which does require some infrastructure, but again, you wouldn't expect it to be much and the facility won't be very big. Other than that, we're really just closing in open space with a facade to give the look of an enclosed area. Along those lines, I think you will see something basic (again, really just a facade) closing off the back of the rear stands. I think that's essential for the aesthetic of the place.

If you think the stands are an embarrassment compared to other D1 programs, you have never seen the locker rooms.

I think the point is that the stands - whether the current temporary-ish MSF ones or any future iterations on Cooper Field - pale in comparison to getting dressed in McShane Large on the embarrassment scale.

Nothing, and I mean nothing, can compete with fans and alums from visiting teams waiting in lines WITH PLAYERS in the porta john lines.

Ran track, we shared the locker room with the football team. That locker room would be embarrassing in a prison. DIRTY, cramped for changing, cramped for equipment, half the shower heads didn't work...I could go on.
I don't mean that it isn't 'nice' in the way other D1 schools may have amenities or luxury touches or things like that. I mean it fails on a fundamental level.

Are you talking about the permanent fb locker rooms in mcd? Are those meant to be replaced in the IAC?

Yep, those are them. I'm not sure if they're slated to be replaced in the IAC - I've seen in the literature that it will house locker rooms for a 'number' of teams, but always assumed exactly which ones will depend on what happens with the MSF. Now that we have Cooper field on its way, hopefully we'll be getting more info (unless it's out there already and I just haven't seen it).

It also says on the TAC project page: Those sports are men's and women's lacrosse and soccer. The wider benefit would be from the domino effect - by removing 6 key sports from McDonough, you open up capacity and the ability to do significant renovations to those existing locker room facilities. So even though Cooper Stadium probably will not have the day-to-day football locker rooms - that's what "game day" means, presumably - the overall locker room situation for football and other sports should get better over the next couple of years.

While dressing in McShane is embarrassing, you only have to do it like 5 times a year, and that's necessitated by how AWFUL the in-season locker room is. The football locker room cramps about 50 players in the space of the basketball locker room. Maybe more.

The Hoya tries to do its usual contratian thing and splash some cold water on the jubilation, but they can't quite muster up the fire for real pushback:
