Kaleb and LJP were tour best defenders in Italy. At the end of a tight game versus the Swiss, it was Kaleb who was on the opponents best player. Very smooth on defense, stays low, is strong and has good lateral quickness. He's going to play as much as any freshman this year.

He's going to play as much as any freshman this year. If that turns out to be the case, our freshmen are going to get a lot of minutes!

About 6-7 Athletic Long arms Able to handle like a point Can make the right pass Can rebound over bigger players Can get to the basket and finish in traffic Signs of being an excellent defender, can even guard multiple positions Is aggressive, goes after it Fills all the columns of a box score
Sound almost like a Scottie Pippen clone. What is there not to like?

Even if he turns out to be a very good shooter right now I don't think the Hoyas need him in the starting lineup when they have talented and more experienced players ahead of him. His time will come. So excited about what I'm hearing about him, Derrickson and Mourning that I don't sweat who the Hoyas may miss out on in recruiting at the forward position (or in Johnson's case a forward/tall guard).

I'm betting some of his defensive abilities were honed in the driveway on his younger brother!

I'm hoping that Tre has put in work on his D over the summer. Having said that, the respective defensive abilities of Kaleb and LJ are going to be big factors for this team. I'm also hoping that Isaac has continued to work on his D. He improved a fair amount his freshman year and showed flashes of being able to be a plus defender. He did, however, lose his man from time to time. Often when trying to play help D. With a season and an offseason under his belt, I expect a jump from him in that regard too.

I have a feeling that he wasn't going to be expected to play so many minutes so early on before the first tip but, on the whole, I'm glad that that's the way it's worked out for him. There's a lot to like in terms of his potential and I love the fact that he's gotten solid minutes against quality competition. And I could not love his energy any more. I think the shortened rotation will pay dividends in terms of the younger guys getting burn sooner than later. He plays hard and seems to have a nose for where to be. I'm excited about Kaleb. Keep working!

Anyone else think this guy may be the surprise of the season. I think III may have a hard time keeping him off the court. He seems very tall. Listed at 6-6 but he seemed almost as tall as Whittington. Kaleb might be around 6-7 with long arms. He seems like a Hollis/Trawick hybrid. Good handles, active on the boards, can finish with authority (better than Hollis but probably not as good as Trawick), nice stroke, and is a heat seeking missile for every loose ball. He's more athletic than advertised. A glue guy but also with high skill level. In fact the best unit might be: DSR, Peak, Kaleb Johnson, Copleand, Govan (even though I don't like Copleand at the 4). This kid may put us over the top this year. The final piece or ingredient. Why not Whittington? I know there are some obsessed with Greg on this board, but a strong defender and scrapper who is perhaps streaky from outside and is a little loose with the ball? Isn't that Greg? EDIT: I just saw I'm responding to a post from June. That said, if we're sticking to Hoyas, I still go with Greg.

He absolutely reminds me of a shorter Wittington.

I think kakeb is more of a dribble penetrate/a Slasher/explosive finisher in the mode of Trawick offensivey. Greg was more of a smooth finger roll type guy. I never felt Greg was scrappy, diving on the ground type defender more of a Derrick Mickey type smooth tall long lock down defender.

Kaleb looks like he'll be the next guy that Big John would have wanted on one of his teams. He doesn't take possessions off. He's engaged every play. I hope that rubs off on everyone. When he gets over the freshman mistakes (it looks like it'll happen sooner than later, no?), we're going to LOVE that he's a Hoya even more than we do now.
