What a great topic to post, btw. The last year they played home games only at McDonough, must have been 78/79 there were two similar moments. As a frosh I wasn't in on this, but wish I was. We played St. John's and they had a player named Curtis Redding who definitely emphasized style over substance and was known as "Hot Dog". So when he was introduced pre-game and ran out, he got showered by by raw hot dogs from the stands. I'm guessing those were the economy dogs from Vital Vitals (on campus grocery store in Healy). At another game that year, we played on national TV against Missouri right after point shaving allegations. When their center Steve Stipanovich was intro'd, it starting raining Bic disposable shavers. If any of the conspirators involved read this, please tell the story in full. The statute of limitations has passed.

Redding stood at the foul line facing the national anthem singer and tossing a ball in the air during the anthem before being pelted with hot dogs - classic. Pretty sure the razors were for the BC point shavers. McDonough in its heyday was as big a home court advantage as anyone could ask for.

Stipanovich was greeted with ski masks and toy guns after shooting himself and then making up a story about being shot by masked intruders. There was a classic banner "Who Shot Stupo?"

In 79-80 or 80-81: syracuse had a guard named Marty Headd, who was bald. For some adolescent reason, my group of friends found this hilarious. A group of us wore bald head "wigs" on our heads for the home syracuse game at McDonough, and booed loudly every time headd touched the ball. In a small gym like McDonough, even a group of 6 or 7 guys doing this was pretty noticeable. The security staff was not too happy, but did not intercede.
In 79-80: Bill Raftery was still coaching Seton Hall. He got so worked up about a call that as he was yelling at the refs, he tore off his sports jacket and threw it on the ground. The scorers table along the sideline was a series of folding tables with cloths draped over them. Raftery assumed that there was nothing but air behind the draping, so he kicked at the table draping in anger. Well, there was something very solid behind the draping, and Raftery slammed his foot into it. He then hopped around on one foot in pain for a few seconds, before sitting down to rub his aching toes. Raftery is an all time great character - it was great that he got a chance to broadcast the title game last year.
That Missouri game was fantastic on every level, one of the all time great college basketball weekends in program history.

In 2007-2008, a UCONN guard named AJ Price (I think) got in serious trouble for stealing a laptop. A large percentage of the student section brought these cut outs of laptop computers and held them up cheering 'U-CONNvicts' every time one of them went to shoot a free throw or were on offense. Amazing.

Outstanding 2g on the Louie and Bouie teams very much like a Mcnamara. A local Syracuse kid from CBA but like most of Syracuse players he never graduated and spent years on campus cutting grass.

One of my jobs for the stats crew was spotting for the running score (typed on an old timey newspaper-man typewriter back then). We hit a shot to go ahead with 0:02 left. Raftery came blazing down the sideline yelling "where's the running score?", stopped in front of us, and demanded to know if the scoreboard clock was right (it was, amazingly). This news was greeted with a 'you're full of sh_it!" accompanied by a fist on the table. Loved it.

My family had season tix at the Cap Center back in the day. There were some guys who sat near us who were VERY intense. They were cordial to us, but borderline belligerent about the game. I recall one time there was some silly routine going on during a timeout to the tune of "You Can't Touch This." The performers lingered for a few seconds after the horn. I thought the guys near us were going to run down to the court and remove them. Thinking back, it was pretty funny. Also, does anyone remember the way Big John used to yell at Dikembe, especially during his first year or so? We could hear his voice distinctly way up where we sat. Good stuff! I used to sit three rows behind the bench at the old Cap Center. Parents would cover their childrens' ears when JTJr went off on a MFer rant. . . That was entertaining. Once, a guy who didn't know that if you sat behind the bench you did NOT yell at JTJr to "put in X!" or "call a timeout" or any other coaching suggesting. Thompson once turned around and yelled at the fan, and this is nearly a direct quote: "What do you know about the game, you fat f#ck!" Ah, the good ol' days. . . JTJr had a similarly off color, though really hilarious (I wish I could remember exactly how he phrased it) response to the McD crowd behind the bench advising him to put my classmate Mike Frazier in the game...

Don't even know the year - probably '87 or '88, the student section was given plastic bald-guy masks with "Boeheim" written across the forehead. These went over really well. Rony Seikaly got a huge kick out of it, and actually put one on. Will post a pic of the mask if I can find one.
There are also great stories of ridiculous shenanigans going on in the Cap Center parking lot as we tailgated before games. Man, what fun.

Jerry Nichols dropping a 360 break-away dunk on some scrub team (Morgan State?) and immediately getting benched by Pops. A sub was at the table before Jerry's feet hit the ground!

Yeah, Pops was NOT thrilled about that 360. But it was a nice throw-down!

What was the quicker Pops sub, after Jerry's 360 or after Eric Myles shooting an ill-advised 3? Man, both those guys found the dog house and never recovered.

I also liked the students reading JJ Reddick's poetry to him before the Duke game in 2006 The Redick-u-lously bad (pun intended) non-photoshop of the JJ sign from that game on the front of the following year's season ticket booklet is up there on the "Only in McDonough!" greatest hits list.

Yeah, Pops was NOT thrilled about that 360. But it was a nice throw-down! Bill Martin tried the same thing but missed so badly that the ball flew into the stands. No sub but Pops did, um, speak to him.

UConn home game in 2008, I think (Hibbert game winning 3), student sign: "Jim Calhoun Supports Global Terrorism."
