I'm surprised there is any angst about this. How many of us had ever heard of Gill, or seen a second of him in action, prior to B & G's tip? I view it as a guy I know very little about, who got almost no run at Louisville, not quite moving the needle enough with the staff to receive a commit-able offer. This seems different then losing out on guys like Dozier, et al...who we know are quite good, and the staff offered.

It's amusing how whenever a prospective transfer to GU is publicized, the initial reaction on HoyaTalk is "get this guy." We then go through the breakdown/teardown of that player's abilities, whether he will fit in, and whether we should hold out that scholarship for another player. We then go into the beating of our breastbones when other schools decide to also pursue that player, and revert to "we need him." Ultimately, the player chooses to transfer elsewhere, and we shrug it off as "no biggie." We are schizophrenic, and dizzyingly so. We are not, notwithstanding our Hoya Blue-colored glasses and the arrival of Akoi Agau, a favored transfer destination. We are deluding ourselves if we believe otherwise. I, for one, do not expect that open scholarship to be taken by any transfer we are supposedly targeting. This 100x. It's like clockwork

I think njhoya78 is right, but I think it reflects the fact that fans often treat the new name with excitement because it's a new person. Collins was a good example of that. Once we knew DSR was coming back, I was never a fan of him because he cannot shoot, but many people on here touted him (in my opinion) far above his actual abilities or the impact he would have made. Gill isn't that far off - his poor offensive numbers also worried me - but he had more natural ability that at least gave him some potential.
As I said in another post, I think transfers get far more attention that they deserve because they are essentially the only form of free agents in college basketball (especially the 5th year/graduate transfers who are immediately eligible to play). My guess is that most of these transfers go on to their new school and do not make a significant impact or improvement. Sure, some do become radically better, but usually that's not the case.

I, for one, do not expect that open scholarship to be taken by any transfer we are supposedly targeting. Not buying the above at all. JT3 has landed Pat Ewing, Julian Vaughn, Josh Smith and Akoy Agau as transfers that had plenty of options besides Georgetown. Each of those guys was a highly regarded top 100 recruit out of high school. Georgetown is no worse a transfer destination than other top programs. As for Gill, I think we dodged a bullet. While he was well-regarded out of high school, he showed nothing in two years at Louisville, even when Pitino was desperate to find any guard with a pulse that could contribute. The best thing he had going for him was that Copeland's dad played with his at East Carolina, so maybe somehow that would entice Ike to stick around for his junior year to play with Gill. Other than that, 3 years of scholarship for 2 years of playing time for this guy really didn't make sense. If he was a 5th year senior, eligible right away and only taking a scholarship for a year, that would have been one thing. But I have faith the staff will get more out of that scholarship recruiting guards in the class of 2016.

Given our desperate need of a guard who can play right away next year, it will be interesting to see how Anton Gill does at Nebraska. Did JT3 and staff "dodge a bullet?", or will he be another Josh Hart, Kris Jenkins?
