Is there any timeline for imposition of (exceedingly light) penalties?

It's very, very difficult to imagine that Roy Williams didn't know about what was going on (and that's being kind). I'm interested to see what stories are published when this is all over and Roy is still the head coach.

Maybe I was naive, but I always thought Roy Williams was a coach who took the academic aspect of coaching at a major university very seriously. Especially, in this case, given that he is a North Carolina alumnus. This does not look good at all for him, and for the Tar Heel athletic department as a whole.
I don't know that we will see any action at all during the basketball season, though. Since the Syracuse penalty will be announced before year's end, and it is likely that the Orange will be facing post-season ineligibility, I doubt that the NCAA would look to penalize two ACC programs during the season and potentially impact the conference tournament (as we saw with UConn and St. John's, schools that are ineligible for post-season tournaments are also barred from conference tournaments) without adequate time for preparation of alternative story-lines for ESPN to use.

Personally, I think that if Roy knew or didn't know, he should be fired either way. If he knew, well, obviously. If he didn't, how detached is he from his guys? He'd have to be consciously trying not to follow their academics, wouldn't he? It's not as bad as being a participant in all of it but it's pretty damn bad. Isn't that a sizable part of his job that he's pitching to recruits and the parents of his recruits? Even if he's delegating tracking of players' academics, there's no conceivable way that the blame doesn't fall on him. I grant that all of the evidence isn't in but I can't conceive of a scenario in which firing him isn't a good first step. It's way beyond a lack of institutional control. That would be a kind way to describe it.

And the second part of your post nj, while probably correct, is equally sad. The product comes first. I expect light "sentences" for both schools at worst.

Tashoya, I'm not cynical. . . I'm cheerfully skeptical. Especially when it comes to NCAA sanctions.

I understand that the NCAA was so impressed with FIFA's investigation into the World Cup site award processes released today that they intend to let them handle the UNC and Syracuse hearings going forward.

Get ready, Chapel Hill. Looks like you are on deck, now that your fellow ACC school is learning its NCAA sentencing today.

And yet, despite the bitterness of '82 and the knowledge that a slob like Chris Brust scored a point (off a BS call) against us in that final, and knowing the depths of the cheating at Chapel Hill, I just can't root for then to get hammered worse than the Orange mouth breathers.
Situational ethics I know, but nobody's perfect.

I'm not sure if the UNC crimes reach as high In the admin, but you figure they have to get at least what Cuse got, right?
