Huge minutes today from Joshua. Not just in quantity but in performance. And, obviously, we needed every bit of it to beat Quette. I, unfortunately, had to miss seeing some of the second half because of work stuff but was listening on a SiriusXM feed featuring Quette's broadcasters. They were insanely biased and let's just say less than complimentary about Joshua's ability to stay on the floor for any extended time. I would have loved to have caught their post-game if they had one but, fortunately, I was home watching OT by that point. Had the privilege to listen to those clowns as well. Smh

On another tweet he noted that Josh is drawing six fouls/game in BE play and shooting 80% from the line. He called him "D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera 2.0."

The fact that Josh and Comrade Mikael have improved their FT shooting is a huge boon to the Hoyas. As well, it causes foul trouble for our opponents.

ExcerptsFor years, college hoops fans have waited for Joshua Smith to lose some weight and gain some credibility as a college standout. ... By the time Smith was preparing for this, his senior season, he was a factor to be mentioned but not necessarily counted upon.
In Georgetown's 95-85 overtime win at Marquette, John Thompson III got 31 minutes out of Smith, the most the senior has ever logged in a Hoya uniform. The result was an 18-15 double-double, an effort that included five offensive rebounds. And over the course of eight Big East games, Smith's been on the floor for 56 percent of the available minutes.
...arguably the best offensive rebounder in the Big East.
The wait for Smith to deliver is over, and soon, so will be the wait for the Hoyas' return to the NCAA tournament.

The wait for he NCAA tournament that has lasted exactly one season? Yeah. I guess this is what happens when you lose in the opening round so often. People forget you were there.

I know it won't happen in the real world, but it is interesting that Ken Pomeroy currently has Joshua ranked as the second most productive player in the conference, per his kPOY formula.
The current Top 5: Ochefu, Smith, Dunn, Henton, Harrison.
Way to go, big fella.

Josh is basically unstoppable down low. The problem is that teams would be insane not to zone us and double him down low. We are learning how to adjust to that, but it will come at the expense of Josh's points and stats, IMO. I think his 15 rbds came because Marquette is one of the smallest and weakest rebounding teams in all of college bball.

Hadn't really thought about it, but if he keeps playing the way he has been, I think he, at the very least, could be our MVP.
12.6ppg, 6.9 rpg, 64.5% FG, 70.1% FT, 1.2 apg, 1.1 spg, and 0.8 bpg. ORTG is 117.1 and his DRTG is 94.4 He's got 5 double-doubles as well and is the clear focal point of our offense. Leads the team in rebounding and DRTG and is second in scoring and in steals. Has the rebound and put back to force OT against PC.
His main competition is DSR, who has 15.3ppg, 40.8% FG, 3.87 3P%, 86.0%FT, 3.9 rpg, 3.5 apg and 1.7 spg. ORTG is 125.0 and his 101.0 DRTG. DSR has one double-double and is both running the offense and is the only player defenses might focus on as much as Smith. Leads the team in points, assists, free throws, threes, ORTG and minutes. DSR has the game winner against Florida.

The current Top 5: Ochefu, Smith, Dunn, Henton, Harrison. Way to go, big fella. Yeah, I saw that. The kPOY formula rewards high productivity, high possession guys on winning teams -- apparently even if they play under 60% of the game. I think it would be a huge surprise to see Smith get that level of recognition unless he goes off statistically. He likely won't get the Jeff Green narrative -- best player on the best team -- even if it ends up being true. It's also just in BE games -- where he probably is our MVP. He's shooting 66% on 2s in BE play and he's gathering nearly 17% of Hoya misses. He's shooting 80% from the line and has a 80 FT Rate, which means that he's getting fouled once in every three times he takes a shot. If he didn't have a turnover issue, he'd be amazing (and basically Mike Sweetney). He's not a huge shotblocker, but he is defensive rebounding strongly and gets a sneaky large number of steals -- basically the same Steal % as DSR in BE play.

This may not be the right place for this, but the situation with the lack of fouls called on the players who are constantly hacking Josh, has to be addressed in some way by JTIII. I am not advocating an Eshrick meltdown, but it is getting to the place of absurdity. The young man gets hacked on the arms 90 per cent of the time he makes a move to the basket and it is not getting called most of the time. You really have to applaud him for keeping his cool, especially when he is getting called for phantom fouls every time an offensive player brushes against him. Unbelievably he did not go to the foul line in the Marquette game until 7:00 minutes were left in regulation. III in some diplomatic way has to point out that just because Josh does not show a physical reaction to all the hacking he receives across his arms because of his strength, it is nevertheless a foul and has to be called by the referees. This ,no perceived harm, no foul, is just not fair to him. He still commits his fair share of defensive fouls by reaching too much, but is not getting the same calls on offense. The Fouls that are committed before he gets the ball, i.e., defensive man literally putting his rear end into stomach of Josh to try to root him out of position or grabbing him to keep him from going across the lane, you can see the refs overlook because Josh is not going to be deterred much due to his strength, but the hacking across the arms after he gets the ball has to be called. It's not fair that this young man has to play by a different set of rules just because of his size.

III addresses this nearly constantly during the games - he is in the refs' ears every chance he gets.

III addresses this nearly constantly during the games - he is in the refs' ears every chance he gets. And he seems to be getting louder about it recently. He should. If you're going to reward the Carlinos of the world for an aggressive move (contact or not) Josh should not be getting the "he can take it" treatment for obvious hacks.

It should be noted, however, that even though about a dozen or so fouls go uncalled on Josh's defenders, Villanova's Pinkston is the only player in the Big East to draw more fouls per 40 (6.3 versus 6.2).

A prominent Marquette blogger was grousing about how Davante Gardner would never have gotten the calls Josh gets. Hogwash.
