“@kevinmcnamara33: Big East and Big Ten will begin a series to tip off season beginning in 2015-16 at campus sites. Event to honor Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt.”
Get ready for UMD vs Gtown…?

When did this happen?
"Delany makes no bones about his desire -- and the league's need -- to have a presence in the New York market, especially now that the ACC already has laid claim to Madison Square Garden for future basketball tournaments."

The ACC is trying and hoping desperately. Delaney apparently does not pay attention to details. This is a very good thing. It helps reestablish the Big East as a major conference. The Big Ten is one of the top 2 conferences, and would not commit to a six year series with a mid-major conference.

Hopefully we get to play one of the big name Big Ten schools like tOSU, Michigan or Michigan St. Would much prefer that over playing an NIT caliber program just b/c they are nearby

I really think it was a Freudian Slip on his part and what he really meant was Barclays. Oh, well, keep wishing for the MSG.

The natural rivalries are obvious in any such challenge series. However, with the Hoyas also recruiting the Midwest there will be benefits to gaining exposure through this challenge in that region, as well.

If they do force a Georgetown-Maryland matchup (which I assume will happen at some point), I hope we at least get the home game out of it. Given all of Maryland's recent transfers and our solid incoming class, I don't think we will be matched up with Maryland on the basis of competitiveness.

The article has now been corrected to say Barclays Center. That being said, it seems a bit of a Freudian Slip.

A Verizon game will hardly have a home court advantage for us unfortunately.

I realize Maryland fans would come but it would be incumbent on us to try to avoid letting them overrun the place. I realize we don't usually do Grey Out games in November but if this was the season tipoff I think we could promote it to avoid too many Terps fans in prime seating.

I agree. They'd need to do what they did for the Cuse game two years ago and try and sell out to Hoyas fans/limit ticket sales. Won't fully keep them out but that's probably the best you can do.

There will be some leeway because of the rotating nature of the arrangement, but it seems to me that in these types of series, they usually start by trying to match up top teams in each conference for at least the first 2 or 3 years; if our recruiting pans out, this would suggest teams like Michigan, Mich. State, OSU and Wisconsin - although I have no doubt there would be at least one UMD game thrown in.

Anyone know how many of geographically close matchups already happen on a more or less annual basis? UW plays Marquette every year. Assume Xavier and Butler regularly play their in-state Big 10 counterparts, but maybe not?

It's six games over eight seasons. I'd much rather see an annual game with Maryland outside the series than one game out of the six.
Another item for discussion: these are weeknight games. Verizon Center is probably less likely to host games because of NBA/NHL demands, much like in the ACC and SEC challenges, where Georgetown had only one home game for each three game series.

UW and Marquette play Seton Hall and Rutgers play Crieghton and Nebraska play Butler plays a rotating schedule with Indiana and Purdue DePaul has played Northwestern recently but not sure if it's a long term series like the others Xavier and Ohio St do not play

It'll probably be written into the agreement that Georgetown will play all of their games in the Challenge on the road...

So did Delany say Barclay's and the WWL misquote him, intentionally or unintentionally, or did he say MSG? By the correction without any attribution, I would suggest it was ESPN expressing MSG envy.

So did Delany say Barclay's and the WWL misquote him, intentionally or unintentionally, or did he say MSG? Neither. Dana O'Neil was speculating that the Big Ten has an interest in NYC for a future tournament and reminded the reader that the ACC apparently owns NYC...or so ESPN would like you to believe. Put the B10 at Prudential Center in 2017 and it'll be a party for the scalpers.
