I just went back and read all of the Domingo posts from when he was a recruit. How can so many knowledgeable people be so wrong. His highlights are exactly that, but his stats, especially from 3 were terrific. As per rivals back in 2011: Stephen Domingo, SF (San Francisco, 2013)- The ridiculous shooting display he put on from deep during the Top 50 camp game was just the culmination of what he'd done all weekend. Given that he's already a highly ranked four-star prospect, it's not a surprise that he was able to go off for 30 points (11-18 FG, 5-7 3PT) and six rebounds. Domingo is as pure a jump shooter as there is in the country, regardless of class, has great size and he is much more skilled creating shots off the dribble than people want to give him credit for. What changed? He hit more 3s in the one game than he did in his career at G-Town. Of course defenses are better, but when you have a shooter like Domingo was suppose to be, you design plays to get him open. This never happened. I think Georgetown did him wrong and I hope he goes on to have a fantastic college experience. Lol. Put it this way. I know for a fact Domingo's camp contacted a prominent Pac-12 school close to his home and were declined. They were told he should go to a school in a much lower conference. Love Stephen, good dude, can't play at this level. He's a middle tier mid-major cat. Nobody "did him wrong"

While I wouldn't go as far to say that "Georgetown did him wrong", I think there is some merit to what 71hoya is saying. This kid has decent size, athleticism, and at one point in his life, knew how to shoot a ball. For whatever reason, he didn't develop (and maybe regressed) in his short time at Georgetown. It's possible one of those reasons is that he wasn't mentally ready to go to the next level, whether that was an age thing or not. Or maybe he fooled the scouts and never did have high major talent. But if JT3 did encourage him to come to GU early (and I have no idea whether that is the case or not), then I can see how one can argue that wasn't necessarily in the kid's best interest.
I don't think anybody can really disagree that he could have used an extra year - whether that was a redshirt year or staying in high school another year. Now whether that would have made a real difference in Domingo's development, who knows. I suspect if JT3 could do it over again, he'd tell Domingo to enjoy his final year in high school. Again, that doesn't mean JT3 or Georgetown "did him wrong". But perhaps they could have "done him better".

Again, that doesn't mean JT3 or Georgetown "did him wrong". But perhaps they could have "done him better". Ask yourself why any high school player would want to come out early or reclassify? $$$. They want to get the one and done over as early as possible and get into the league or play pro ball overseas. They are looking for that extra year of salary that they will never get back. (In Domingoe's case he may even be able to get German/EU citizenship to play in Germany due to his mother's German citizenship). That is the main incentive from the prospects point of view. Domingo was considered a top 30 player in the 2013 class. U-16 World Champion star. If he was good as everyone was projecting him he would have come in and started playing immediately and either go one and done or after two years and still come out ahead. If he's that good, then staying in high school doesn't really do much for him except cost him the opportunity of an extra season in the pros. If he turns out to be good but not a one and done then he ends up being a Hollis Thompson type who plays 3 years, has a great career at Georgetown (including beating Belmont and advancing to the 2nd round) and making the league. Obviously the worst case scenario happened for everyone but he is still young and will have 3 years left with a scholarship at another school (including the transfer redshirt) which still isn't a bad deal. This type of thing can be hard to predict sometimes. Lubick was supposed to have good outside shooting range that extended past the 3pt line. That's why Duke and Michigan wanted him. Sometimes a shooting form only works at a lower level against shorter, less athletic guys the high school league or in a helter skelter AAU ball environment. That was the case with Lubick. Balla was really the only one who was completely right about Lubick's shooting in high school: hoyaballa.yuku.com/sreply/216/Nate-Lubick-Hoya-2010However, even knowing Lubick's shooting problem, Balla still really wanted to recruit Lubick because of the other things Lubick brought to the table and also the thought that Lubick could make some adjustments and improve his mechanics over 4 years at Georgetown.

I guess we saw the hand writing on the wall as III goes through with player interview. Thought the kid had a lot of upside, we were pitched as a great shooter, but Georgetown obviously didn’t need his talents. Wish him as good or better success as Jerelle and Vee has at their next stop.

This was going to happen, it had to happen for both parties. Don't like to keep repeating that it was probably a mistake for III to get this kid into college a year early....but it was probably a mistake for III to get this kid into college a year early. Maybe it wouldn't have made all the difference but I think it hurt Domingo in some way at least. Plus there was the tension with his high school coach who was against the move and didn't exactly give Domingo his blessing. Let III end such experiments. Hoya Balla kept hoping Copeland would skip his last year in prep too in order to play with the Hoyas this past season and I was dead set against that. Let these guys enjoy their last year before big time athletics take over their lives. With that said I wish Domingo the best. I'm sure a fresh start will do him good. We aren't a blue blood program so we need to take flyers on guys while they are still under the radar either because they are projects (like Hayes or Bolden), come out early (like Domingo and Hollis), haven't played AAU (like Otto) or have some circumstance (Moses just coming to the US). JTII and JTIII understand this. If Domingo or Hollis stayed in high school and increased their ranking and became McDonald's All American they would likely be swooped up by the blue bloods. So it's a gamble but it's a gamble that pays off when we hit the jackpot with guys like Hollis and Otto who are NBA caliber talent. This is the reality of what we have to deal with in the one and done era. There are 24 McDonald's All Americans in 2014. Of that group 15 of the 24 are going to the 5 blue blood schools. 3 of the 24 are going to the 3 Big State Basketball schools. That leaves 5 McDonalds All Americans for the remaining 173 D1 schools including Georgetown. (and the undecided Myles Turner who is likely to go to a blueblood). Blue Bloods: (15 McDonalds recruits) Duke 4 UK 4 UNC 3 Kansas 2 UCLA 2 Big State Schools/Almost Blue Bloods(3 McDonald's recruits) Arizona Indiana Ohio State Non Blue Bloods(The rest of us): (5 McDonalds recruits) SMU Stanford UNLV Maryland Undecided Seton Hall Well aware of which programs are hogging up the recruits. Still it is one thing to try to get a very early commitment from a prospect, it is quite another to work behind the scenes to convince him to drop his final year in high school in order to play college basketball. If the Hoyas are doing it because they feel that is the only way they can get any elite recruits than they are pretty pathetic recruiters and are going the cowardly route to snare the guys they are pursuing. Most importantly they might not be doing the player any favors and I would think a guy like III would want to do right by the kids he is bringing in to his program. By the way UConn has won four championships without ever dominating on the recruiting scene as Duke, UNC, Kansas and now Kentucky do. Why is that? Anyway the method worked out well for Hollis I suppose although he only missed the final season of his high school year and didn't play in a Hoya uniform until AFTER his high school class had graduated. The method did not work as smoothly with Domingo. While it may not be fair to state that the failure was the result of Domingo skipping his final high school season, I still hope this will be the last time III goes that route.

he will go somewhere else and start.like vee and jerrell, both good players that g-town do not use. jt3 needs to go to a more of attacking style of offence, that give players chance to make plays.the system he runs is awful and players is not developing in it. when they leave and you watch them on other teams they look good. i know it can not be all these players fault that they can not get playing time. when they leave they flourish on another team. why can't jt3 stop being so strict on the offence and the whole program for that matter.the guys look like they are not having any fun, like they are so worried about being perfect and running the g-town machine that they stress on winning, so much they keep failing. look at uconn coach, and what they did.they have fun coach is positive, they play loose.hoyas play like it is not bball but a business.they need to change this whole program,if jt3 is always going to be here,he needs to loosen his tie and loosen up and have a little fun with team, before his head explodes. even coaching staff looks like there are all business like ,3 runs the team like a business.to much pressure to win ,because the way the program is run,the players act scared to just have fun and play.you can not play without having fun, play loose and coaches and head coach need to loosen up some.the whole program is to arragent anf full of thereself. bball is a fun sport, have fun and the players will play loose.do not be so ,everything has to be perfect because we are g-town. time to take a step back and really take a look in the mirror and make some changes. go gu.

I am really not surprised by this. He came in too early to get out of a high school situation where he was "tall" so his coach was pushing him to play back to the basket center, even though in USA international play he was small forward and in AAU the same (not saying much as it is rare for AAU centers to play back to the basket and big man role). When Domingo arrived two Summers ago he didn't play in Kenner as it wasn't quite clear if he had finished high school and was eligible. Domingo's shoot arounds his freshman year he had pretty good form and was nailing outside shots. But, toward the end of the season and after a few rough games not only was his shooting confidence off, his form was off.
Last Summer at Kenner his form was a mess with his feet between 45 to 90s way from the basket and hips shifted around too. When he would get much closer to squared up than 45 degrees away his shots would drop from deep. But, he was horribly inconsistent with his form. The good form he had coming in and seen in USA play snippets was gone by last Summer. My kid could predict if Domingo's shot would go in before he released the ball by looking at nothing more than Domingo's feet. (My kid continually asked if I would say anything to Domingo, but that isn't my role (I'm a fan) and I think there are rules against that.)
I am saddened to see Domingo coming, but mid-season with his lack of playing time and knowing what Domingo came into Georgetown with as far as skills I figured he would transfer. He is a good kid and from I am a fan of any kid from the Bay Area so I am sad to see him go.
Hopefully the year he will have to sit out will give him time to mature and time to focus on getting his great outside shot back. I hope he goes to a school where they focus on the outside game and improving shooting.
I think Georgetown was a good choice for Domingo, but he was a bit early. There is a lot of growing up that happens between 16 and 18, there is a lot of understanding the finer points of basketball that is picked up then too. Georgetown's style of play (even when JTIII drifts from his heavy read and movement offense to a simpler style) relies heavily on that understanding the finer points of the game and nuance. Reggie Cameron struggled with the reads and movement quite a bit until the last 2 or 3 Big East games. While I don't think Georgetown wasn't a good fit, I do really wonder how on Earth his shot got so absolutely messed up.
All the best to Domingo and I look forward to seeing his shot come back and see how well he can really play at this level.

Shooting was the least of his problems. You can't play a wing position at this level if you can't guard anybody and you are not secure with the ball.

The Big East - both versions - was just too fast for Stephen. He could not get the game to slow down enough to be comfortable with his shot, so he pressed and lost his form and his rhythm. Hopefully he will find his level and recover his shot.
