In the spirit of Dan's post in another thread, I'll throw this topic out there for discussion because, outside of recruiting, it is my main interest in this offseason. With the presence of 3 likely top 10 teams in the NBE next season and a slew of top 25-caliber teams as well, how in the world do we schedule in OOC?
Well, to my knowledge, we have away games lined up at SJSU, UMich, Illinois, and San Fran. I think this is a good start in the sense that we picked off a good opponent from a major conference in UMich, a team that can go either way next season in Illinois, and some lower conference teams who we will play on the road.
What I'd like to see through the rest of the non-con schedule is a mix of home and away games (maybe 2/3 home and 1/3 away) with the average or benchmark being a Davidson level team. This will give us, hopefully, a good RPI moving into conference play and a few wins that the Committee would respect, although they may not be on the level of beating a Wake Forest or other top 10 team. Anyway, a couple names to throw out there... Mason, American, Holy Cross, Yale, Penn, UVA, James Madison, St. Joe's, Xavier, Bucknell, Lehigh (make Xavier a midwestern swing with UMICH)... If we must play a Grambling next season, please pair that game off against a NCSU or opponent of that caliber.
One other thing that I'd like to see is for us to mix a non-con into the middle of the league schedule. Many programs do this (Nova had KU this year), and, especially down the stretch, it could give us some breathing room headed into the postseason.

Lots of good suggestions there. A lot of teams finalize much of their scheduling around the Final Four weekend, since most college coaches are in attendance there. Some items for additional discussion:
1. Georgetown remains hamstrung by MCI Center scheduling policies, esp. with the continuing instability on the NHL. Does MCI want to wait to fill the Capitals schedule before it opens up dates to Georgetown? If so, a lot of good opponents will simply go elsewhere.
2. Georgetown did a better job in avoiding RPI bottom feeders in 2005 and this should continue. Of the Eastern teams you suggest, Virginia, Penn, and Holy Cross would all be good RPI-friendly games.
3. Georgetown should also consider Big 12 teams. This is the only major conference GU has never played in the regular season and a region worth some recruiting interest.
4. Finally, if Maryland and GW continue their public nonsense with the BB&T, call Navy or American and add a local game every year.

Don't we still have to ensure a minimal number of homes games without future away game commitments in order to guarantee a certain amount of income?
I'd be surprised if we add many more Non-Con road games.

I believe the only games that are set for next year are Michigan and Illinois, at least as of about 5 days ago.
And about scheduling, doesn't the current RIP formula make it smarter to schedule good teams from weaker conferences that will have strong final records rather than weak teams in major conferences?

Does anyone know if there are plans to return to Hawaii or another tournament next year?

I like DFW's thoughts---wouldn't mind us playing Kansas, Texas, OU, OSU, etc.. and think it would help recruiting as well because those would be televised games against good teams. I think Hoyas should aim for 4/5 tough non conference games and then some respectable matchups against mid-majors who can play but would give us some W's. With the Big East about to become the toughest conference ever put together, you've got to enter the conference with some wins under your belt but also with matchups which will prepare you for the tough games ahead.

Texas would be a fun game. Dare I say even swapping a home-and-home with A&M and Billie Gillespie's team would be interesting. I could have bragging rights on my father and uncle for years if GU topped A&M in a hoops matchup.

I think it came out of BET weekend or one of the meetups that the other two games (SJSU and San Fran) are going to happen. As for the RPI question, hopefully SF or THB will chime in.

The only ones we currently have are roadies- @michigan, @illinois, @sjsu.
This means that very likely anyone else we'd have would have to visit us first next year.
I'd like a Big XII team or an SEC team, as well as Navy or GMU. But that's me.

If I were to pick a SEC team, I'd love to see Vandy. They would fit into my "Davidson" standard, cited above as a NIT team this year, and I'd love to see a Shan Foster grudge match.
Maybe we could add another southern school, of College of Charleston caliber (maybe Western Kentucky) so we have a good southern swing.

When was the Michigan away game made official? I heard it was a possibility last year, then nothing else.
San Jose State and San Francisco (I'm not sure if the latter is officially confirmed) is awesome, hopefully they're over winter break so I can catch them when I'm home.
If those 4 road games hold true, then I think that's it as far as our OOC away schedule goes. And that will be good that we get some extra road exposure, we only had one OOC away game last year vs Davidson. I hope JT III can then schedule some decent home games, get us in a preseason tournament of some sort that has some decent competition (doesn't matter where), and like was previously suggested, have an OOC game or two within the conference season. I like that too.

USF is NOT confirmed yet- don't get too hung up on it yet.
My guess is that 3 would like to have some degree of latitude in making his own schedule, and hadn't had a chance to do so until just last week. Give it a bit of time, fellas.

Since USF is not confirmed yet, I'd really like to see one more West Coast date set, or possibly something in Hawaii. Going across the country for a single game against a DI bottom feeder in San Jose State wouldn't make much sense to me.

At a couple of the Hoop Club events in Hermosa Beach, Brandon Bowman's dad said he was talking to III about a game in So Cal. I heard there is bad blood between Gtown and UCLA from the home and home series a couple years ago, but that could leave USC or Loyola Marymount. A game in Southern California would be pretty sweet for Brandon, Ashanti, and Ray.

I agree that there will almost surely be a second West Coast game next year, matched with SJSU. A USF game would be fine, but I would selfishly hope it will be in SoCal.
Does anyone know what the bad blood with UCLA is about, other than that a guy who was shooting 8% from the line (ok, that's a slight exaggeration - but not by much) hit two in a row to beat us?
I would also like to see us play Vanderbilt. Shan Foster blew up in the loss to Memphis, and I noted that he shot 44% from 3 this season. Think he would have fit into III's offensive scheme?

Also, is there going to be a home game at McDonough? Obviously, it will have to be a SJSU type team, but the Hoyas should try and play at least one game there a year.
