That's your unfounded assertion. If I believed you actually knew anything about how our coaching staff spends their time, and if you hadn't sent negative messages in EVERY thread on this board, I might respect your opinion. Yes, yes, you're too negative, trust the staff, blah blah blah. If you had to write a list down, who do you think we are focusing on in the 2021 class? We're still wasting time on the same kids that Darrel Owens says we're not going to get, and the end result is that we are signing kids in May and June that either recruited us or we are their best offer. That has to change.

I don't have any issue with us taking a few swings for the fences in each class, but I'll admit it's hard to see us going from landing guys like TJ Berger and Collin Holloway in 2020 to landing guys like Chet Holmgren and Patrick Baldwin in 2021. The majority of the 2020 class--and the majority of the roster at this point, if I'm not mistaken--did not have any other firm high major offers. So going from there to beating UNC, Duke and Kentucky for Top 10 players in 2021 would be quite the turnaround to say the least.
There are a lot of nice players between the extremes of "elite 5 star" and "2 star with no high major interest." If we miss out on those 3 and 4 star types again in 2021 because we were preoccupied chasing 5 star players, that'll be bad news. But I think it's too early to assume that'll happen. We have plenty of offers out to players in the "goldilocks zone" in 2021, and it's impossible to know who we're really prioritizing or what (if any) the opportunity costs really are of us staying in contact with some 5 star players.
I do think 2021 is a really important class though. Many of us have praised Patrick and the staff for his willingness to "grind" in recruiting, which is something that many questioned when he was first hired. And his effort level is great--but by his 5th class (4th full), good effort isn't enough anymore. Time to win some recruiting battles. If by this time next year we haven't made a significant jump up the standings and we're not winning recruiting battles either, it's going to be tough for many to feel optimistic about the program going forward. The next 3-4 months are going to be critical, as a higher % of 2021 players than normal have already committed. If players continue to come off the board and we're nowhere to be found by the time LOIs are being signed in the fall, we may end up in a situation like this year again where we are reaching down a level or two to fill up our scholarships.

A) We don't recruit the few 5-stars that we do at the expense of anyone else - 4, 3, 2, or no star. It's not a realistically finite amount of time. This is a non-argument that keeps getting re-hashed. If we were only attempting to recruit these kids, that'd be one thing. But our offers and anecdotal visits have been scattered across the board -- and we've been successful in our basic strategy (getting the 75-200 kids) since Pat's started here. 6 of those core kids + some talented transfers (Omer, Allen, Galen) + a remainder of other 200-300 kids (Mac, Walker, Gardner, etc) is a roster you can win with more often than not. Regarding that -- B) This year we're signing the most SRDs we ever have b/c we lost 5 guys in the last half year with scholarships we weren't expecting to fill. Plain and simple. If you just took the scholarships we were planning on replacing (Jagan, Allen, Omer) and replaced them with say, Sibley, Beard, and Clark (or throw TW in there) -- wouldn't you have have been happy with that? We couldn't just snap our fingers and say, oh we've got 5 new open spots... let's grab 5 more 3/4 star level kids. I don't necessarily blame Pat for that -- as much as I'd like for it to have happened. That's an entire recruiting year/class of relationships you have to scatter to make up in a couple of months in the middle of playing your season. My biggest beef is maxing out the scholarships w/ these under-recruited guys at the expense of keeping an open spot to use for a late de-commit/Grad or Reg Xfer. Maybe that's a new recruiting philosophy for Coach (shying away from xfers/de-commits given their higher rate of doing that again) after getting burned here, but I think that'd be a little short-sighted -- especially for a roster that's lacking high-end talent.

Get this kid an offer too... “He’s got Boston College, Xavier, Temple has been there from early on, Richmond had him for a junior year official, Providence called this week and he has been around the program a lot because of A.J. Reeves, Penn State offered and he has been in contact with Coach (Patrick) Chambers a lot,” said Nelson. Nelson continued, “BC has done a zoom call every week, Xavier has done a zoom call with the entire staff and his family, and they have been in contact a lot from Travis Steele to Dante (Jackson), those schools that I mentioned are all in contact. (Ed) Cooley face timed and talked to him last week and offered. He has a good plethora of options.” 247sports.com/college/basketball/recruiting/Article/Gianni-Thompson-Penn-State-Providence-Xavier-Temple-Boston-College-Richmond-basketball-recruiting-147723597/

Those Gianni Thompson highlights if you would have told me, I found some old Issac Copeland footage. I would have fallen for it. Same gait and movements it is uncanny. Expected to lose a bevy of transfers in the spring, Boston College took the first step towards replacing various holes throughout its roster on Sunday. Landing its first commitment in the 2021 class, three-star forward Gianni Thompson gave his verbal commitment to the Eagles. Attending Brimmer and May School which is located just minutes from the Boston College campus, Thompson chose the Eagles over Penn State, Providence, Richmond, Temple, Virginia Tech and Xavier. basketballrecruiting.rivals.com/news/gianni-thompson-stays-local-picks-boston-college

What is the prime area we are missing out on? NEPSAC kids plus Coach Ewing is from the Boston area(He played for BABC back in HS) where many of these Mass Rivals(they've been turning out a lot of high-level talent lately) kids are from...

I was thinking the same thing. Like what I see of his game. How tall is he? I hope the staff is working behind the scenes on this youngster, can never have enough versatile players... It's not like he's unknown. He plays for a national power program in St. Louis (Mo.) Vashon on the high school level and has been an intriguing prospect for some time now because of his length and versatility. Now, his production is starting to catch up.
Playing with Team GoL1ve in the Sunflower Showcase, the 6-foot-6 Kern spent an awful lot of time with the ball in his hands on Friday night. He was slick off the dribble when getting to the rim, set up teammates for easy shots, and was basically a matchup problem.
Yes, Kern needs to get much stronger and he can be very up and down. But, he's highly versatile, still growing and has a really big upside that he seems to be realizing. Kern said that DePaul, Saint Louis and Southeast Missouri State have offered and based off of what he's looking to be capable of down the road, that is just the start.

Seems like they are now shifting to PGs for the 2022 class now. Alot for the people we are offering are 2022 PGs I've been saying that with Tyler Beard moving to 2021 and the addition of Jordan Riley, I believe the staff has moved off of another PG in 2021. I think if a 2021 PG that was special and they had spent a lot of time & resources on like Frankie Collins or Kahlil Brantley called and wanted to come, the staff would probably take them and try to figure it out later but otherwise I believe they see Beard as more then capable of running the point as well as Don Carey, Dante Harris & TJ Berger for 2021-2022 season. Expect the staff to go after another PG in 2022 Class.

Scorers and athletes should be top priority. Based on the shooting percentages in last season's box scores: 1. Shooters 2. Shooters 3. Shooters 4. Shooters 5. Shooters

I would take athletes over shooters at this point eight days a week. Kids can learn how to shoot.

Whenever this board, including me, thinks they have an idea of what the coaching staff should do, or have high hopes for a prospect, the coach has other options and considerations. Perhaps Mutombo would be a great addition and politically, how could he not be accepted if he chose the Hoyas? I am sure that is a different conversation, Ewing and Deke have likely had that conversation. Whatever we think, Coach Ewing likely has another viable option. The big name prospects that we like have plenty of options, so we have to trust in coach Ewing to deliver a recruit who will help us win this year or whenever play resumes. I just want the best players we can get to accomplish the mission, WINNING soon!!! I want to have hope and optimism for an exciting and competitive season.
