we averaged a little over 8000 fans per OOC home games last year, will we do that good with this years OOC schedule?

Do you guys think the upgrade in the OOC schedule is a reflection of the reduced strength of the Big East or just a new approach to better prepare the team in March? Both? I actually think it's more the former. I've thought all along that this BE has to make a splash in the OOC games for the first 2-3 years. Once it has the credibility of a high major, or at least a powerhouse-beast of a mid-major, then maybe the schedule can lighten up. But this year, we need the top 4 or 5 BE teams each to grab an impressive OOC win or two. That'll go a long way in keeping us on the map.

I agree with you about the importance of making a splash in the OOC games. However, for this next two years it is critical for the Big East conference games to be competitive and entertaining. Fox is providing the national platform. Some new fanbases, such as Creighton and Butler can provide the necessary atmosphere, along with hopefully a resurgence of fan interest at traditional programs like St. Johns, Providence, and Depaul and continued interest by Hoya nation, Nova and Marquette. The foundation of the Big East has always been that the conference games were compelling, not because of the blowouts by the powerhouses at the top, but because of the physical play, the intense atmosphere in the arenas and the incredible performances, whether in buzzer beaters or multiple overtimes. Only Hoya fans remember last year's games against Indiana, Texas or UCLA-- the memories from the general basketball loving public flash to the Hoya win over Louisville, or the three struggles with Syracuse. The Big East needs to entertain and a tightly packed conference with competitive games will draw the attention necessary to rebuild the conference's image as a premier basketball league. Most importantly, the Big East simply must perform well in March, when the entire sports nation is watching.

The times of the games will probably make an impact on whether we do that well this year. I, for one, hope that we do as well, if not better, during this year's OOC schedule.

TBird41, sure is true, depends on how many Monday Night football games and college conference championship we get scheduled against and what games are during student break.

I don't mind finishing this season at Villanova, and I would like to see that rivalry develop and become a marquee game year after year for the conference. That said, I don't think there is any need for this "protected rivalry" stuff - we play everyone home and home every year, so what are you protecting? Just let TV try to set up the best match-ups every year for the big dates, so that if, e.g., Georgetown and Marquette are both preseason top 10 teams and Villanova is looking more like 2012 than 2009, we aren't left trying to hype a "rivalry" game when we could have two teams battling for a 1 seed instead.

Supposedly the "protected" rivalry game is subject to change year to year.

So, it looks like someone in the AD already added some of the November basketball games to the master calendar: www.guhoyas.com/calendar/events/Obviously the last three listings are wrong and just artifacts from when we played those games last year (substitute Lipscomb for Tennessee). But the JMU game is news? Or do we think that's some weird artifact from the Liberty game last year that got populated into this year's calendar and put JMU there for some reason? We haven't played the Dukes since 2006. November 14 Men's Basketball James Madison TBA Verizon Center November 19 Men's Basketball UCLA 8:00 PM Brooklyn, N.Y. (Barclays Center) November 20 Men's Basketball Indiana/Georgia TBA Brooklyn, N.Y. (Barclays Center) November 30 Men's Basketball Tennessee 6:30 PM Verizon Center

According to AD Lee's twitter feed, Big East Commissioner Ackerman is on campus today. The timing of the schedule release doesn't appear to be a coincidence.
