By the way, can anyone confirm that we now have 7,600 undergrads? I didn't realize the student body had grown that large.

Some have suggested that the reason to avoid public schools like VCU is so that the league is not subject to freedom of information act requests to reveal the inner workings of the league. All the information about BE matters was always coming from South Florida or Cincinnati or another public school it seems. Whether that is worth the trade off is obviously a matter of opinion.

Great article by Liz Clarke and the timing is good to, someone at the Post actually put some thought into when to release it, wow. I was not aware of DeGioia's past relationship with Big John, very interesting. This does give me more confidence in how the B7 is being constructed and the commitment schools will have to its success. The article also reflects well on Georgetown as taking a leadership role in this whole process.

Per the 2010-2020 Campus Plan, "The Traditional Undergraduate Program student headcount shall not exceed 6,675 students." I think if you added in all the groups excluded from the Traditional Undergraduate count - those studying abroad, the relatively small number of School of Continuing Studies bachelors students, the Second-Degree Nursing students, the SFS-Q undergrads - it could add up to 7,600.

The big news here is that the Fox TV money is predicated on a long-term grant of media rights. That helps explain why the dollars thrown around are so rich. It also means that we are forever giving up whatever slight chance there might have been that we would join the B7 and then later bolt for the ACC after it gets decimated. The Fox money is also so high because Fox needs winter programming in a way ESPN and others don't. This article is a bit too speculative/conspiracy-ish for my tastes, but it does lay out the case from Fox's POV pretty well. Shows just how dumb NBC was when it bid for the BE. Really really dumb.

I'll be honest, that article didn't do much for me at all.

Well written, Liz Clarke.
The extent to which President DeGioia cares about basketball wasn't totally clear to me before. It's heartening to hear his commitment to basketball excellence, as well as his adherence to other criteria and ideals that make us who we are as a team and a school.

I'm of the mindset that the ACC will fall apart before the 7 will.

Phenomenal article at GU. There have been a number of great pieces in the last few years that have made me very proud -- this is at the top of the list. Someone at GU is doing a great job with this stuff. My favorite part was of course JT's love for Jack. But I particularly loved reading the quote more closely -- JT would "come close" to jumping in front of a bus . And the 7,600 undergraduate number includes all undergraduates -- students abroad, part-time, non-degree, Qatar, SCS, etc. The "traditional" undergraduate student body ranges from about 6,100 - 6,600, depending on whether you count students studying abroad and a couple of other groups.

The best part about this article was DeGoia's statement -- on this Syracuse game's eve -- of the criteria for the new conference, and the order in which he put them. While I doubt it was meant to be a pointed reference, there could not be a better way to artfully say "This is why we are Georgetown, and Syracuse is not . . ." "As for the essential criteria of the schools that will be added, DeGioia, a member of the reform-minded Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, cites three: Schools that put the student-athletes’ interests first, both in the classroom and on the playing fields; school whose athletic departments are conducted with integrity; and schools that play exceptional basketball." I wonder if he'd have been so quick to make this integrity point if Pilarz wasn't now in charge at Marquette. Buzz Williams's record on character/integrity leaves a lot to be desired. This may be why my MU contacts are worried about Buzz bolting for a Texas opening if it comes up. There is mild tension in the administration, from what I hear.

Great article, but the sweater game was in 1985, not 1987.
