Not to douse the happiness too much, and I do think we should beat SJU at home, but there are some things that highlight that the recent streak is not necessarily our actual level of performance (but rather, we're on a bit of a streak). If you look in BE play, we're #2 in 3 pt shooting -- which can be volatile. Are Otto and Markel (both above 40% and Otto's shooting insane from 3 right now) actually this good? Perhaps, but we're shooting 36% in conference play. That's not unsustainable, but it is the best part of our offense now, which is looking a bit more like it usually does. More importantly, our great defense is being held up by things that are sustainable in most part - 2pt FG D, the best defensive rebounding in the conference (no, really!). But we're also the #1 3pt FG defense team by a long shot. At 27%. That's not likely to hold. I don't buy into the teams can't influence it at all analysis, but it's clear that a rate of 27% of three from your opponents isn't all your defense. That's insanely bad. Some of it is our opponents, and some of it is our D. And some of it wouldn't have mattered (The Hall usually shoots well but they were so bad it didn't matter). But with some likely close games ahead, that luck may not hold. Hopefully, the offense can continue to develop to pick up the slack. Looking over our 3 point shooting numbers, we've actually been a very good 3 point shooting team all year. The Pitt loss was our worst 3 point shooting game, 2-12, and against Tennessee we were 1-7. Even in our loss to USF when they went off from 3 in the second half, they still only shot 29.6% to our 38.9%. The only team to really go off from 3 against us in Indiana with Hulls and Watford going a combined 6-10. I'm not sure it's a fluke.

I think this game is going to be contentious and chippy. SJU was embarassed by us in MSG. Harrison was awful in that game, mostly due to our defense. I would think they will come with a littel extra in their step to prove the last game was not indicative of their team. However, if we can get off to another strong start, I think we could get in their heads that they are not good enough to beat us. I expect a tough game, very physical.
I agree with SF, the 3 point offense and defense will eventually fall to the mean. My only hope on the offense is a cool down for Otto's crazy good shooting could be offset by an uptick in DSR's shooting. He clearly is a better shooter than he has shown.

A Lavin coached team winning the games they are supposed to win is a great accomplishment. Lavin's teams at UCLA consistently played down to the level of their competition, but typically performed well against the better teams. I look for St. John's to play much better against us on Saturday than they did at MSG.

We finished last year #1 in the nation at 27% 3pt defense....so I'm not sure it's just a coincidence.

You're absolutely right. We're never below average in raw %s and we've been top 10 in a lot of years.

Yes, St. John's is 6-3. And USF is 1-7. Pittsburgh is 5-4. There are no trap games in the Big East. You have to bring it every game, every night. If the Hoyas stay focused, they should be all right. If they don't, they could lose to any BE team. GO HOYAS!!!! Beat the Redmen. I love the Redmen reference.

Anyone have one of those CBS coverage maps to tell whether we in SF will get the game?

So, I had not realized that the game was going to be on CBS and I am going to be out of the coverage area. Does anyone have thoughts on how to watch?

I know that "balla" is often a dirty word in these parts, but he has informed me that cbssports.com often provides live streams of its televised games. I intend to try that

Gotta win this one and 4 of next 5 before very difficult stretch.
If we show up and play great D, we should be able to take care of Johnnies, Rutger, Marquette and DePaul.
The USF loss still chafes. I hope it our only true "bad" loss in conference this season. Pitt I don't count.

I guess...but our conference opponents shot 28% from three against us last year. As you know, we did lead the nation in 3 point FG% defense last year. I love Pomeroy, but this isn't just luck.
