Or, I suppose, the more likely idea that he's gay. Hope not--this is not how a player who is going to be the poster child for openly gay athletes needs to start his career. Rather have it be a normal person who doesn't feel the need to make up stories of dead girlfriends to pursue personal glory and fame. If Teo is gay and comes out-he'll be the "victim" and will surpass Tebow as the most annoying story talked about in sports. Gay athletes have been around forever and while it's not the most comfortable environment for them, most teammates have suspicions/know about it and don't say anything. Some of Teo's teammates think he's gay--but the ones speaking to media are saying they didn't believe the GF story and it was being mocked in the lockeroom by team--coaches told them to keep quiet and just go about business--as coaches do. I'll not be shocked to find out that his dad was involved somehow. That guy is a real glory seeking a-hole. So many lies being told--problem is you can't help but get caught in it-as his comment of last reading a letter written a full month after her supposed death that he's on record saying he reads all the time. Why the lies with Vitale on the air--and admittedly as a skeptic of goody goody people--when he mopped the floor after the interview it was just so beyond the level of being a phony--it was just hate inducing. If he comes out gay--I'll hate him. If he's straight--I'll hate him. If he's bi--I'll hate him. If he dates blow up dolls, I'll hate him. So his sexuality has nothing to do with it as much as his thirst for limelight and being fake. If you're gay, like to invent fake gf's and then kill them off, fine. But at least admit it when you get caught--quit acting like a victim--especially when you have benefitted from the attention and have provided a false story that so many in the ND community and outside believed in and sold. If there is anything that sums up this generation of people-it's this entire story--from having to inject "human interest" angle to an athlete that 99.9% of the people only care about how he performs on the field of play. Media finds a "hero" and rides that angle into the ground which makes them a villian--not because they are good/bad but because they are placed on a pedastal. Then media gets angry when public doesn't buy it and they turn on the person when they prove to be human and make mistakes, which then makes the "hero" the "victim". Simple people as myself like to keep it simple. You want the spotlight--don't get annoyed when you are taken down a notch. Dont' play a victim after the bad deed or in this case lying is discovered. Just admit your faults and apologize. That is all most of us do and understand but for some reason this new trend amongst making people into "heroes" and "bad guys" as if real people are actors or pro wrestlers is taking over and don't even get started on the lack of fact checking/editing by media. We saw last year how unprofessional Pete Thamel was with the Nerlens Noel/Errol Randolph stuff, how can this clown be employed by major media outlets with such shoddy, inaccurate and false information? He should be fired immediately and suffer same fate as Teo is getting--humiliation.

So, in the end, Teo was dating Fawn Liebowitz. Pretty close to a generation-spanning relationship. You'd think kiln safety would have improved in the years hence.

The strangest things about this are that an Arizona Cardinals LB claims to have met Teo's girlfriend in person (even though she never existed) Quite possibly the weirdest development in a story that I didn't think could get any weirder. I'm not going to comment much except to say it stretches the imagination to believe that Teo is completely a "victim" here. I'll say one thing, and this may surprise many who know how much I loathe Notre Dame: I really do hope that there is some logic or sequence of events that (at least mostly) vindicates Teo on this. I don't think that's the case, but I kind of hope it is. Because, even though I think he is an overrated football player, if he perpetrated this, that is one seriously deranged person. There is definitely at least one sick, twisted individual in all of this, and -- believe it or not -- I would like to believe that it's not him. Notre Dame just went all in with him, so they better hope so too. I wonder if NFL front office people will grill him the way they grilled Dez Bryant during the draft and evaluation process? Or will the media darling of the media darling school get a pass?

This is all just wrong.
Fawn Leibowitz was real, Eric Stratton's relationship was made up. Jeez.
I at least want to hear what Teo himself has to say, but it sure sounds bad. Personally, before I get all the facts, I think probably that he lied about some aspects of his "girlfriend" because he had only met her online. These are making the waters awful muddy now that it comes out that she's not real. As to what he knew and when, it seems bad.

Man, I had to look up Fawn Leibowitz (probably make some of you feel old). I thought you guys were talking about FRAN Leibowitz, which I though was so odd. here is an article from deadspin where they talked another ND player deadspin.com/5976762/manti-teos-teammates-had-their-doubts-about-lennay-kekuaBasically many of them suspected that the relationship was over blown and was used for publicity purposes. Screw the NFL, he should go into politics. Both parties would love to trick the media into thinking things that arent real.

Mostly agree, RDF.
Reality here is for some reason both him and his father obviously lied about some things that it takes something a little bit wrong with you to lie about. Making up a girlfriend is sad and pathetic but what are you doing after she "died"? Even if it wasn't your idea, the sympathy; the public speaking; it's just freaking creepy and in some way really disrespectful to those who actually have lost loved ones.
Agree too that the first major team sport athlete to come out in the US should do it in a manner of strength and dignity -- not as getting caught trying to hide it in a bizarre manner.

I think it is important to point out to everyone at this time that there really is no one named "Boz."
(Even when Charles Dickens was alive, there wasn't.)
I also do not have cancer...though the word is still out on liver disease and I'm fairly certain I do have OCD.
Just wanted to make that clear before any of you decided to fall in love with me.

I'd have to imagine that Notre Dame isn't exactly the most welcoming place to come out of the closet. Just saying. I think the rest of this is bizarre, and I'm not even sure that his sexuality is part of the story, but man, that would be a tough place to be.
If he is gay, his father's role in all of this probably makes a little more sense (and is very sickening)-- making the girl "real" because you don't want to face the reality that your son is gay. Maybe he just needed some Homocil (late 90s SNL commercial).

And even though it wasn't Otter's line, I have to throw in "food fight!" and "was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"..RIP, Sen. Blutarsky.

I think Te'o was in on this all along and can't believe ANYBODY believes his lie about being the victim of a hoax. It's clear to me that he made the story up as a way to make himself into a sympathetic figure. I mean, ESPN's College Gameday does a 'feel good' story every week, M.Te'o was aware of this and wanted to have one of his own. To me, it's as simple as that. The thing is he wasn't smart enough to realize his story had a LOT of holes in it and could be easily exposed. At least, he should've picked a name of a female who really died!! LOL
The reason he's continuing the lie is because he doesn't want his draft stock to plummet even further and he doesn't want the good name he HAD to be damaged even more. You already have people sticking the 'Mentally Ill' tag on him if he did make up this story. He doesn't want to start his NFL career with that stuff(and now gay rumors) looming over him. So claiming to be the victim is a perfect defense(it always is) because a number of people believe his LIES!!

I think he was in on it the whole way. Think about how much time and effort the perpetrator of a hoax would have to spend pretending to be a girlfriend. It doesn't seem plausible to me. On the other hand, he's a 22-year-old kid. Kids that age do dumb things. So it doesn't seem outrageous that he and one of his boys would concoct some story to toy with the media.
I'm almost willing to give him a pass--boys will be boys--but the media really screwed up by buying the story hook, line, and sinker. Here's my problem--the grandmother, and her death, was very much real. So he went along with the fake death of the fake girlfriend to add to the story about the suffering involved in the real loss of his real grandmother. That, I think, is really twisted. (Of course, if he wasn't in on it, it's a different story, but I believe that he was in on it.)

Much worse is ND allowing him to perpetuate the myth after he "learned" of the hoax on 12/6. Of course, this story is equally as true as the Gipper, Rockne's sick son and the pronunciation of Joe Theeesman's name.

Yeah, but there is no way the "victim" story will hold up the first time he has to answer a question about it. The facts dont add up as others noted. And, let's face it, there is no way he can avoid answering questions for the next few months.

He'd better start talking. That sound in his ear is not his phone buzzing from a new fake tweet. It is the sound of NFL GMs updating their draft boards.
Not that he won't get drafted. Of course he will by someone and maybe still in the first round, but I can't believe that NFL teams are not going to have second or third thoughts about someone who is potentially a severe head case. The longer he doesn't talk to anyone, I have to believe the more he is hurting his draft stock.
