How many of Tennessee's 36 points came with under 5 seconds left on the shot clock?
I think the boys' defensive effort was as outstanding or more so than everyone else mentioned here, no question about it. But there were way too many late breakdowns in that defense that allowed Golden to burn us.
Just my opinion.
As for the offense....what can you say. I don't think Tennessee played as great defense as some people have said, because we WERE getting good looks and getting good shots off. No one could hit anything. No one. But I am fairly confident we'll never see such awful execution from them, particularly Otto, again.
Glad it was a W at least. I can't imagine what the reaction would have been if that game had ended in a loss.
I am sure there is something to be learned from reviewing this game, but I also agree with this: destroy the game tapes, burn them, bury them, and salt the earth over their remains.

I don't understand why Hopkins can't jump. He's not carrying any extra weight. I'd love to know his vertical jump. It's got to be stunningly poor. Hop can probably jump and reach higher than anyone else on our team (who has seen the floor).... I'll take Bowen as a leaper--I think Hopkins is athletic--but he's just not strong in lower legs (to his defense--this program fails it's players in that area and has for some time) so when in traffic he struggles to explode and finish strong above the rim. He played hard and while it's not fun to say--I'll take his effort-he competed and battled all night. (meaning you'd like to celebrate results and great performance, not effort) Actually saw DSR attempt to play some defense for a few possessions--so that was improvement and then of course he had multiple busts--but at least he understood what he was doing will not cut it. He is what he is-a slow/unathletic player, so he's going to get blown by on defense--but at least he got in a stance, sprinted back on defense and tried. Someone has to win a game like this--and we won't remember this game as anything other then a win by season's end. Only thing that was frustrating--Hoyas had a nice spurt going when they got out in transition to start 2nd Half and then they decided to slow it down/grind it out? This is what is just so frustrating to watch about this team at times and if you want to commit to improving that area, it has to be consistent throughout a season.

Didn't think it would be with 4 minutes left but Markel's pretty 16 footer was essentially the game winner. More and more he is looking like the guy, along with Porter, who can take and make the big shot. Good sign for the next two years.

RDF touched on this, but one positive I saw last night was DSR looks to have gotten the message that his effort on defense needed to change. This is not to say he is or will be a good defender, but he was engaged on that end of the court or the first time this year. He gt I a defensive stance, moved his feet and gave effort. There was a possession where the shot clock was winding down and he started clapping and yelling/communicating during a very good defensive possession as the shot clock was winding down. He has gotten the message and hopefully his defense will improve now that his effort has ramped up.

Exciting news: you can look at the game now on replays at ESPN3. Hold your hats, it's really exciting. Don't miss it.

Agree with those who basically say, it was an awful game, but we won, let's just move on.
Will also agree with those who think we are substantially better than Tennessee -- I feel like while our defense is not that good, it was the primary driver in Tennessee's poor play. We missed a lot more wide open shots than they did. We got better shots and took better shots.
The only area where Tennessee beat us badly was on the boards. Virtually no offensive boards and gave them quite a few easy point early. Also really poor defensive transition -- Knight mentioned it, but honestly UT doesn't break 30 if we're bad on D more consistently.
We really shouldn't miss Nate that much, but in this game, his passing and ability to box out would have been nice adds. Mikael played some nice D, but really disappointed me in his complete inability to both time and get after rebounds. When he jumps, he's almost always doing it at the wrong time, and most of the times he's flat-footed letting someone else grab it from him.
These are games where Otto, Whit and Starks need to be more personally assertive as well.
And man, what would this board have been like if we lost?

This is what is just so frustrating to watch about this team at times and if you want to commit to improving that area, it has to be consistent throughout a season. Yes Bowen's a great leaper and his vertical is higher, but Hopkins still has a higher reach than him. And I agree with your points, but the one caveat is that a good vertical is not always associated with strong legs. Some people have very strong legs but can't get off the ground very high, and some people have very weak legs but are the ones who can jump the highest. I know a guy that plays college basketball with a 40 inch vert but can't squat 95 pounds more than a few times. For Mikael to be able to hold position against a behemoth like Stokes at all, implies that he has decent/good strength in his base. Mikael can get up, he's just not quick off his feet (partly because he does a decent amount of ball watching), there's a difference. Some people are quick off their feet, but do not jump very high. Some people are slow off their feet, but can touch the sky. It's important to evaluate individual cases rather than generalize.

His defensive effort was much improved, still missing reads but I’ll take the effort for the most part. Playing time can be a hell of a motivator...

Hop can probably jump and reach higher than anyone else on our team (who has seen the floor).... Love your enthusiasm, but...what? He can reach the highest point if he were to jump. In other words, if i could pick one of our guys to touch the top of the backboard id probably take him. It's not enthusiasm, it's just an observation based on watching everyone. And thats observation from different avenues (Yates, Kenner, etc.), not just game observations. You can often learn more about a player's abilities outside of an official game, believe it or not. If I told a casual observer that Jabril has a 44 inch vert would they believe me? probably not. Just because he doesnt play that way doesnt mean its not true. Mikael has long arms and good enough lift. Who would be your candidate of players who've played? I think Bolden (and maybe Hayes because of his length) might be able to do better, but I have not seen much of them since they've gotten to the hilltop.

Kentucky today=Hoyas last night. But, of course, the Hoyas won.

I thought Hopkins, Whittington, and Porter gave the Tennessee bigs too much respect once our guys got in the paint, opting for floaters or banked shots going away from the basket instead of going up strong and playing through contact. It's great when Starks makes those stylish banks and flips in there but the bigger guys need to go to the rim more.
I also thought that even when we ran the offense well we ran it too slowly. The cuts were not hard enough, the passes were not crisp enough, and the drives were not decisive enough to collapse the defense.
And the jumpers were hesitant semi set shots at times. Jump shooters need to use their legs, jump straight up and shoot at the top of their jumps to be consistent.

To change the subject. I think the Hoyas biggest problem this year will be our lack of depth. We go 7 deep at most. Moses and none of the frosh, with exception of DSR, are ready to contribute in big games. Hopefully they will get some quality PT before the BE season begins. DSR will be the key. If he can grow into the stud I think he is by February we will be in good shape come the BET and NCAA. Also, once Louisville and Syracuse leave we become the BE flagship school. We become the keeper of the flame. Can you imagine Houston or Boise as Big East champs?

Coach Knight had nice things to say about JTI last night. Today Clark picks us one of the sleepers from the BE.

I know he didn't have anything to show for it--but I like Domingo's activity/energy he brings. He just needs a game where he hits some shots--and get confidence up. I expect him to play a larger role then Smith Rivera by end of season and if Hoyas are to peak in March.

I have seen him hustling on defense, which was supposed to be his shortcoming. Also believe that these next 5 games are critical to the development of the bench. JT III has to take a chance--even if the games are close. Would like to see him sub in Moses and Hayes and Domingo a little in the 1st half when the game still has a long way to go and their mistakes won't hurt as much.

Cal I agree, I'd do that exactly. Give the guys some burn during first half. Maybe early. They'll be needed.

I was at the game and it truly was terrible - worst game I've seen but we just have to fuhgeddaboudit period. One observation - I thought boths teams played a hyperintense, aggresive, give not an inch, terrific Defense. This may have contributed ever so slightly to the difficulties both teams had in scoring.
What is the status of Nate's injury?
