Interesting tidbit about Gary and UMD recruiting in an article in today's NY Times about Deron Williams. He was talking about how he went to Dallas to meet with the Mavs, but Mark Cuban wasn't there... so he deided to stay with the NETS. Williams compared the situation to when he was a high school star being recruited by Illinois, Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Maryland. When he learned that Maryland Coach Gary Williams would not meet with him, he canceled his visit.
“So that was the end of that,” Deron Williams said. “Similar.” www.nytimes.com/2012/10/09/sports/basketball/deron-williams-chose-nets-over-mavs-partly-because-of-mark-cuban.html?ref=sports

There are many similar stories about JT2 out there on the same subject.

There are many similar stories about JT2 out there on the same subject. True. However Gtown fans and the DC media didn't spin those actions to suggest that other coaches and programs were cheating to "steal" those recruits away. That had been talking point for the Gary William apologists in the DC area for about ten years until he retired.

False equivalence. Try again. One rumor about Khalid that was mostly passed along Hoya fans on a Hoya message board does not equate Terps fans making charges about dozens of programs not only on their own message boards, but on radio call-in shows and the comments section of newspaper websites. And, last time I checked no one in the DC media ever went around trying to sell to the public that JT was a saint who played by the rules while virtually everyone else was corrupt. Hell, Sports 980 folks didn't do that for JT and he worked at that station. But Sports 980 folks would toss around that lie in defense of Gary time and time again.

JT2 said as much at the annual banquet (in '96 I think).

False equivalence. Try again. My man, why are you always so confrontational and condescending? Always such annoyance with anyone who disagrees with you. Some things never change, I guess. At least you post less frequently than in your board heyday... Anyway, my point was and is true. There has been plenty of chatter and insinuation among Hoya fans about other schools "cheating" to beat us out for recruits over the years, most recently when a certain flat-topped doofus humiliated us on ESPN last spring. I am certain you know this. Your new point seems to be that Maryland fans have been louder about these suspicions - but that only means that there are more of them, and that a few of them happen to have shows on local sports talk radio. If RDF had a show on 980, I think more people would hear about his version of Syracuse's recruitment of Mr. Noel, no? In any case, I agree that Terps fans have been more vocal, consistent and generally whiny about their charges of cheating by opponents - all I was saying was that Hoya fans have done the exact same thing many times over the years. I hope that you deem my latest effort to be a bit more worthy. Actually, scratch that - I really don't care!

UMD fans do have more an inferiority complex because they are always a bridesmaid in the ACC. So they have more incentive to make stuff up.

zagsblog.com/articles/roddy-peters-planning-ucla-kansas-visits/“He’s still going to possibly take the UCLA and Kansas visits,” she said. “UCLA, we don’t have a date yet. It got cancelled [this weekend].” Jamena said her son would visit Kansas Oct. 19 even though the Jayhawks on Monday landed a commitment from 2013 point guard FRank Mason. Asked if Kansas had told him they still want Roddy after landing Mason, she said, “Yes, they did.” He is also considering Rutgers, Georgetown, Maryland and Xavier. She said she hadn’t necessarily noticed increased interest from Maryland after the Harrison twins committed to Kentucky last week. “So far it hasn’t been a big deal,” she said. “It’s not a big deal to Roddy. It never really has been.”

Two interesting developments. Is he going else where for MM or just not going anywhere. Would be a huge coup if we could get him to ours.

I hope that you deem my latest effort to be a bit more worthy. Actually, scratch that - I really don't care! If you don't care then why respond? One reason I don't post as often because I learned that little lesson. Without trying to sound too confrontational your argument doesn't hold up. It has nothing to do with numbers; Hoya fans simply didn't think every other program was cheating when Gtown lost out on recruits. Period. It never became the culture of this board outside ofperhaps recent years of making such charges against Kentucky...but everyone does that when they lose to UK. We Hoya fans typically knew of far more rational reasons for why we lost out to other schools (like, say, facilities). We didn't see JT Jr. as some victim even when the deck was stacked aganst him as the result of overall poor funding for the athletic department. We called JT out on his laziness on the recruiting trail. I'm sure you can provide examples of when Hoya fans did finger-pointing at other programs; every fanbase pulls out that excuse from time to time. But for Maryland that excuse became religion and the surrogates of Terp nation on the radio would actually promote this lie on air without a shred of proof to back them up. So to say that same type of blame game was going on at GU is nonsense. If that comes across as too condescending for you then I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm only calling it as a I see it.

Some close to the situation feel it's between Rutgers and Md. ... He may visit Kansas , but landing Mason may have hurt them there. Not sure if UCLA will still get a visit , but I highly doubt he leaves the area that far. I would've rather focused more on Rysheed Jordan , but if somehow we can sway Peters at the last minute ... Cool! I'm in the crowd of wanting a long PG to run the show here , but I have faith in Markel to have a break-out year this season and hand the duties over to DSR the season after. DSR will be a better player off the ball IMO so it's important for us to land a elite PG or combo for 2014. Time will tell ..
