Does anyone know where/how the story (legend?) of the clock hands being mailed to the Vatican got started? Any truth to it?

It was the story in my days in the early 60's. Every spring they would disappear like (excuse the pun) clockwork.

IIRC, the hands were stolen in the 1970s, and replaced, painted in a candy stripe. Anyone else remember this?

Yeah, I mean I know 5 years ago the university didn't know what social media was, but I never remember them publicizing it. This time around, they are practically encouraging it
They have to say its "bad" and "unsafe" and whoever did it is "in serious trouble," but their social media posts make it seem like they aren't really that concerned.

Would a $100 motion activated camera (widely available) solve this issue?
I dont mind pranks where no one gets hurt, so this is pretty innocuous. But if it really costs 25k to fix this, well the university should probably do more to prevent it from happening. With the difficulty fo this prank and the time and planning that clearly went into it, youve got to give the kids come credit.

An alarm system on the key doors would be an interesting investment too and one that has probably not been thought of given what we know about Georgetown.

The thieves claimed they had to get through "obstacles" to get to the room, and all i pictured was a wardrobe pushed up against a door and some 2x4s tacked on it too

"The prank dates to at least the 1960s, although the tradition of mailing the hands from the Jesuit university to the Vatican apparently didn’t start until the 1970s."
In the 60's the legend indeed included a trip to the Vatican. I don't know if they really went there, but that was the story. Maybe in the 70's they took the step of really mailing them to the Vatican. Anybody know if they really made it to the Vatican either in the 60's or 70's?

The real question is what happens when they get to the Vatican. Do they have any idea whats going on? Haha. I really like envisioning the Pope being the one opening the package (though I know thats not the case)
