I'm confused. Isn't he from Nebraska? And wasn't he Governor there?
I'm not going to support his candidacy, but I'm not sure how this makes him a carpetbagger?

I'm going to assume KC was referring to his move to NY and considering running for mayor.
"Kerrey, of course, will have to overcome charges of carpetbagging. Despite being a former governor and senator from Nebraska, he moved to New York after retiring from the Senate in 2001 and even flirted with running for mayor of New York City."

Ahh. Probably would've helped if I had actually read the article.
;D
Thanks for the clarification. Still seems a stretch to me though. The label works if he is running for office in NY, a la Hillary, but not so much if he is returning to his home state to run.

I mainly wanted to work in a reference to Justified. ;D But it'll be interesting to see if many Nebraskans are put off by him running off to NYC the minute he left the Senate.

New York has a history of electing "carpetbaggers", probably b/c so many people in New York are from elsewhere originally. Nebraska, being a more insular state, is probably going to care a little bit more about the guy leaving the state than New York would about him moving from somewhere else.

Is Mitt Romney a carpetbagger? Hard to see how someone can be a carpetbagger when they are running for national office.

And anyone else who loves new wave and/or ever listened to WLIR just had a profound nostalgia moment.

When he ran for governor, there were questions concerning his residency. Those criticisms would have been legitimate, though I think there's a difference in moving somewhere for the sole/primary purpose to run for office in that locale.

Perhaps Kerrey feels like representing the people he used to represent and wants to return to where he was born, grew up, went to college, and lived for what appears to be 20-30 years. I don't know. Just a guess.

Just a guess. He'd represent them, but he wouldn't want to live there! This election is apparently a gimme for the Republican nominee whether Kerrey is persuaded to run or not.

Given the record of congressional Republicans (and the Bush Administration), that sounds more like a threat than anything else.

Whatever this is, it isn't carpet bagging. That term has historical meaning that has nothing to do with someone returning to his home state where he previously had a distinguished career.

No - the question when he went to MA was with respect to UT. I have not seen his birth certificate or a certificate of live birth, but I take him at his word.
