Jason shoots from 25' because Hollis is supposed to be the NBA guy. Simple, right? He's done anything and everything to get noticed by scouts this year. Do I love it? No. Do I understand it? Absolutely. You can watch Hollis and Jason in warmups and see the shots from the same distance. That said, Greg hitting shots is the best news we've had since we all saw that Otto is going to be a freaking beast. As someone else mentioned, it's going to add a whole new wrinkle and open up a lot of the middle for us. I can't wait for Hop to get more minutes and convince everyone that he's a viable backup both offensively and defensively. Otto has been so good that we almost expect double double type performances every time out. How great is that? And he's a freshman!! Mr. Lubick.... great freaking game! He found his inner Otto in terms of being in the right places. It was eerie. I loved seeing that as a fan of the team and as a fan of the kid (I'm a fan of all of the kids... they're HOYAS!!!). I can't imagine how much of a confidence boost that game was for him but he deserves every bit of that. He's working. You can see it. I don't know if it's the lack of time he got in the Cuse game but he looked more energetic today. I'd be willing to bet that he's killing himself in practice and hitting the weights and it's been costing him on the floor. He's put on a good amount of muscle and is in much better shape than last year and even from the beginning of the year. Thankfully, we have young guys that have stepped up and have helped to get us wins while Nate has been sitting but I love that we have the interchangeable parts that we do. All of these guys are needed and all of them have been additive. There's no questioning this groups' heart or motor or level of caring. There's no talk of not buying in or infighting. This team is exactly that. They pull for one another and pull in the same direction.... toward winning. Love this group. I still don't care about our record this year. I still only want to see improvement and we've seen individuals do that from game to game. If it all clicks at the right time? Look out.... NO ONE will want to see us as their draw. No one.

The student turnout was a joke, but I think we've been spoiled by the post Final Four years. Wihtout huge success b-ball just isn't a big deal. Unfortunately, it might be time to go back to students behind just one hoop. Now, the non-student turnout? I thought that was pretty good. How is being in the top 15 not "huge success" though? This team is a giant success story, and the students don't seem to care this year. That's on the students - there were bigger students crowds to some of these games in the Esherick era. Time to stop blaming the team and start blaming the current bandwagon student populace that doesn't care whatsoever but manages to combine that with the sense of entitlement of a Duke student from New Jersey who think they are owed 3 Final Fours during their four years. If the team exits the tournament early, I guarantee we see more of the "needs to be held responsible" and "history of excellence" crap that we read last year at the end of the year in The Hoya. Couldn't agree more. These guys are playing their a$$ses off and exceeding all expectations. If you don't get your butt in a seat for this group, what group would you go see? This is YOUR team. They're YOUR classmates. How do you not show up for them? Inexcusable. They need your support in any year. This year they've more than earned it. Go watch! They're a ton of fun to see!

The students are embarassing themselves this season, but this is the power of advertising at its worst. The team was supposed to be "down" so the general population of students who are as insulated from the real world while on campus, simply do not realize how much this team is over-acheiving and playing well.
The schedule also does not help. Usually I make it down from NJ for 3 games, but not so this year. A combination of bad timing and a poor schedule. The big east is down and that does not help either. Games against Uconn and Nova just are not that exciting this season. I will be attending the Nova game, but only because I could not find a better weekend game.
The poor schedule, the perception this team is not supposed to be good and the previous season's disappointments have all led to this. I hope III makes it a priority again to re-engage the students and get the players some visibility, accessability on-campus.
A run in March will go a long way to helping, but I hate that this is what it always comes down to. A single-elimination game in March instead of everyone enjoying the journey and appreciating the play night in and night out.

I agree 100%. But this is just how these fair weather fans view the program. It's sad, but this is how they apparently think. We all know better, but they apparently do not.

Jason shoots from 25' because Hollis is supposed to be the NBA guy. Simple, right? Jason was shooting from 25 feet yesterday because he did it up at Syracuse and hit a couple of huge shots, and I think he fell in love with his shot a little too much. I really had no problem with any of his shots yesterday other than the distance.

On a positive note, it does appear that Henry has put his 18 foot jumper away for the last few games. He's so much more effective shooting it from 12-14 feet. Nice adjustment from him. And he finished a few layups yesterday, which was nice to see.
Our big men will need to be contribute on Saturday at Providence. Another team with strong guards and weaker front court. I expect to see Nate have a another strong effort. He'll have some family in the house no doubt.

It isn't a recent development as some are implying. He's done it all year and did it all of last year too.

Except that he hasn't done it all year. he definitely has. He takes at least 1 a game. It usually gets mentioned at least once a game thread. It's less noticeable when it goes in, but he has done it plenty this year. I think a little less than last year, but it's still been there all year. It was just super noticeable yesterday because he took about 6 of them.

If you scrolled back through comments from 2010-on, you'd probably find a number of complaints about it. Fact is, Clark sometimes makes the long bombs...and we would've been blown out at Syracuse without Clark's long 3s. So, as far as I'm concerned, I am prepared to live with them. Just want him to pick his spots and make sure his feet and body are squared to shoot.

But unlike most people, I'm okay with it (most of the time) because it's Jason deciding he's going to make something happen. We need more fire like that.

I'm rewatching the game on MASN right now.
They just showed the block call against lubick. He's perfectly set but gets called for the block. Seems to me st. john's got the call because the player jumped to the side so on hit the side of Lubick. This call seems to happen quite a bit and has always annoyed me. If the player is set but the offensive player doesn't hit them square on then it get called a block which seems completely bogus. Should be a no call at worst.

When the defensive player gets hit on the side, rather than square in the chest, he can't flop backwards to draw the offensive foul. Probably accounts for this dynamic somewhat. But no call at the least if the player is set. I agree.

You guys just hit on one of my biggest pet peeves. Why the heck should it matter if a guy runs into his opponent's chest or side, as long as the opponent is set???
As for Jason's 3s, the only one I didn't like was late in the second half when he really rushed it. That was the only one JT3 seemed to have a problem with as well, if you watch the press conference, with Jason nodding in agreement when coach mentioned "he did chuck it up one time."
No one was complaining when he hit long 3s against Cuse. Agree he tries it a few times each game, but I don't think it's so much that it is anywhere remotely close to being one of our bigger offensive problems.

The issue isn't the long threes. We know from prior quotes that Coach teaches longer threes sometimes -- because it's easier to be open from 23' than 20'. Stepping back creates space.
The issue is settling for that shot early in the shot clock. If your choice is between an open 25' three and a covered 20' three, then the former is possibly a better shot. If your choice is between an open 25' three and 20 more seconds of looking for a better shot...

Jason's shots against Cuse were huge--but he also played entire game and didn't take one of those launches until late in game. Yesterday--he began game with them. Bad shot selection and especially against a team that struggles to defend as is typical of most young teams. The shot around 2 min mark with Hoyas up 7 and ball was horrific decision--and magnified due to the experienced player Jason is/leader of team. That's type of shot that didn't cost Hoyas yesterday's game but could in a 1 and done scenario. Had a ton of clock to run as SJU wouldn't have fouled and it was same type of shot that got Hollis yanked from game when Hoyas were up 49-46-and rightfully so.
Most concerning was the bad defense. The team's calling card to surprise season has been defense and yesterday was about as bad as they've been all year in regards to allowing dribble penetration and players getting open looks. Do that Saturday and Providence can win. They've played well at home all year and just come up short, but have to expect they'll see the council who dominated 2nd Half of first matchup entire game. Can't afford to letdown now--have to keep playing tough/good ball.
Also--FT shooting issues crept up late. Left 5-6 pts on court with missed front end, and not making both--Hollis did his "leave the line" routine again. Stay on the line/follow through! That let SJU hang around longer then should have.

The point is Jason has been taking the too long 3 pointer for a while. It isn't a recent development as some are implying. He's done it all year and did it all of last year too. Except that he hasn't done it all year. Where the 3pt shot by Clark is taken is determined in large part by where the screener is on the court when he sets the screen. Neither Clark nor Markel has a handle that strikes fear in a defender that they could drive past them or make them brake their ankles with a crossover dribble. Therefore, most defenders pick them both up high as opposed to laying back and preventing the blow by dribble. Therefore the screener has to come out high to set the screen which is beyond the 19 ft arc, which results in a long 3pt shot. Markel has passed on most of these because he knows he does not have the rope JT3 allows Clark to have. That is why a PG with ball handling skills will be desperately needed by this team next year.
