Agreed. Cuse is not a good shooting team. Expect to see a lot of zone. Henry HAS to be stronger with the ball. Clark and Otto will likely be taking most of the freethrow jumpers. We need Hollis to have a strong game and Markel needs to stay out of foul trouble early. I'm looking forward to this one. We can't afford a sluggish start in this time. Knuckle up Hoyas.... time to smack the Cuse Melo/Devendorf style!

Interesting thread. Clearly many of you have done your homework on the Cuse.
A couple misconceptions I have to clear up for you. Someone said you need to worry about James Southerland driving. Not a concern. His three point shooting has been a bit off, but his mid-range game is pretty much lights out.
Someone also mentioned getting the Cuse to the foul line as a potential way to beat us. Truth is this isn't a typical SU squad. Our guys can actually shoot from the charity stripe pretty well. Sitting smack dab in the middle of the standings for that this year in the BE. 69.8% compared to Gtown's 70.5%.
Shooting from the outside has been an issue. Inconsistent is the best word for it. MCW hit a couple the other day but he doesn't get all that much run, so he's not the best option for 3 point shooting. Southerland was our best to start the year but he's been in a slump for awhile now. Scoop will hit a couple, especially when it's really needed. Waiters and Triche can hit them, but again, inconsistent.
I also find it interesting how little chat there has been in here about Dion Waiters. He's the guy that can do the most damage when his game is on. He had a nice game on Saturday, playing within the offense and himself.
Looking forward to the game this week. I'll be disappointed when we leave the BE and this isn't a regular thing anymore.

I would accuse you of killing the vibe here, what with this reasonable and informative post, but I don't think Hoya posters need any help being buzz kills this week for some reason.

I agree with the Cuse fan about the shooting. Triche, Scoop, and Waiters can all shoot better than there % indicates. The reason there % is so low is because they take horrible shots way too often. Scoop is a bigtime shot maker. And what I mean by that is he will miss 7 in a row and make the big one once we have gotten there lead down to 2 pts with 45 secs to go. Waiters has also become bigtime this year but he is more of a scorer than a shooter. I feel like our length could give Waiters alot of problems. Another key is to get Melo in foul trouble. We need Henry to be the best big on the court. Melo changes SU's zone. With Melo in the game it is really hard to dominate from the FT line and elbow because he blocks alot of short Js...........

They do block a ton of shots. Don't defensively rebound all that well, though. Crash the boards when we miss.

(not to mention a Markel Starks Lousiville-esque performance in general). I'd love to see Otto skyrocket to the top of the Syracuse Enemies List after his first game.

Key players in this game will be Hollis and Markel. I think you know what you are going to get with the remaining starters and the frosh off the bench. You don't know however what you are going to get with Hollis or Markel. Will the aggressive on both ends of the court Hollis show up or do we see the floating Hollis on defense and offense? Do we see the confident Markel who constantly looks for opportunity to drive to the basket like in the Kansas game or the Markel who is content to only pass ball quickly around the top of the key? Do we see the Markel who moves his feet on defense or do we see the Markel who reaches for steal as his man drives past him? Hollis has got to make it tough on the forward/guard trying to guard him be continually moving through and around defense. Markel has to make defense honor his ability to drive by driving into the middle and kicking out to the wings as Wright used to do. Hope we see the good Hollis and the good Markel Wednesday.

Imagine if SU recruited a player named Hoya and a Thompson on the same squad. You've already had to root against a John Wallace and a Greg Monroe as well.

Imagine if SU recruited a player named Hoya and a Thompson on the same squad. As I recall, you had a Thompson not so long ago. Couldn't shoot worth a damn, but he was still a player. I think one of the reasons that Cuse is so strong this year is that they go 8 deep without losing anything. There aren't many benches in college basketball better than Fair/Waiters/Southerland.

Just received a phone call from a business associate I know in Syracuse who said that there is more hype surrounding this game in Syracuse than any other this season. Players and fans will be up for this one.
What I like about this team, is that we polay our best against the toughest opponents. We should be in it the whole game....and for the record, I say we unleash the zone.

James Southerland and CJ Fair would make those shots all day, or dish to Melo for a flush.
