The Great Alaska Shootout used to be a big deal because it took advantage of a special rule the NCAA had for Hawaii and Alaska schools: the tournament was exempt (it only counted as one game). That was built in to enable the schools to entice mainland teams to want to play OOC games there - it was a means of offsetting some of the isolated schools' annual travel costs.
Once the NCAA decided to extend the tournament exemption to anyone with the mean$, Alaska was screwed.

If only Stanford had pulled it out yesterday, the entire axis of evil would have gone down. Stanford has now let me down three times in my life. Three strikes and you're out--they are dead to me now

And with a lot of help from the officials Uconn takes Florida State into overtime in one of the sloppiest games of basketball ever played. Luckily for Florida State its only November so there is plenty to teach their players how to dribble. Although its been four years and I'm still not sure if Jason Clark can.

You can make fun of players even when they are playing well ya know. Plus saying "I'm still not sure.." about Jason Clark's handle shows major improvements in that area. There used to be no question about his lack of ball handling skills.

Saw the second half of the UCONN game. I must admit that I was shocked to see Oriaki and Roscoe on the bench so long. And in an overtime game (45 mins) they played 12 and 10 minutes respectively. I think those are two good players so Im kinda baffled by how few minutes they received.
On another note there will be chemistry problems with this UCONN team. Lamb is supposed to be the man, but you could tell he was not happy when he didnt get the last shot of regulation or ot, and Shabazz took a deep 3. And even Boatright seemed to be out for his.

There could be chemistry problems, sure. Napier clearly thinks it's his time and he's the man. The problem is Lamb and the freshmen are clearly more talented than he is. He had a big game today because his shot was falling, but he is constantly taking the wrong shots and holding on to the ball too long. His hot shooting built them a lead both yesterday and today...and his poor shot selection and dominance of the ball blew that lead both days as well. Boatright could be very good given some seasoning. His ability to take minutes from Napier will be key to UConn's success. He has the quickness to get into the lane with regularity. That unlocks Lamb and Drummond's full potential. Watching Providence and Northern Iowa now. Provy is just waiting for next year's class. They're still far too small to shoot so badly.

I suspect UConn may be beset with some self-internal jealousy.

I suspect UConn may be beset with some self-internal jealousy. Or a decent zone defense.

I've been following that Oriakhi situation. It couldn't happen to a more deserving program.
After seeing UConn and Syracuse this week I stand by my point I made days ago. UConn and Syracuse may have more quality big men and 6-4 and under guards, but Gtown has the best collection of versatile 6-6 to 6-9 types (forwards) that can actually play. Syracuse's players almost look loss, helpless and disinterested when they are forced to play a halfcourt game. When they aren't running up and down they look average except for Joseph. As for UConn the Huskies always look sloppy because they are exclusively a one-on-one team. But when their shots are falling they can get away with it. What they have to worry about is depth. They seem to have very little of it.
Let me add after this past week Jason Clark may end up having as good a season as any guard on Syracuse. And if Henry keeps playing well (and getting better as a result of finally being on the court) then I may very well take him over any big man from those two teams other than Drummond. That is because his passing and ability to stretch the defense with his jumper sets him apart from guys like Melo and Oriakhi.
This UNLV-UNC game has been fun so far.
