sheesh only 10 mil raised? Wasn't a silent round of donations going on from the big donors that were supposed to cover most of this?
Where is the big name donor for god's sake??....leonsis come on man pony up....Why do most other schools get these massive gifts from single donors to build things and we seemingly never do...does georgetown really alienate their alumni this much?

sheesh only 10 mil raised? Wasn't a silent round of donations going on from the big donors that were supposed to cover most of this? No, the silent phase was to accomplish exactly what it has. There are undoubtedly people on the sidelines who have not yet committed, preferring to wait for whatever sign will convince them the project is real.

Ask those who committed $12 million expecting to get the MSF built. I guess one unintendeded consequence of the focus on the IAC is that the MSF and Boathouse will not see the light of day for the next 10 yrs if ever.

GU Wall Street Alliance event at Cornell Club in NYC last evening with JT3 and Lee Reed (similar event held two years ago at Skadden Arps law offices in NYC). The following topics were addressed:
LIFE AFTER HOOPS: 13 players who all aspire to be in the NBA. Coach must ground players and prepare them for life beyond basketball. Wall Street Alliance affords players the opportunity to network and learn from alums engaged in finance. Lubick was recently in NYC to take advantage of the program.
2011-2012 SEASON: Lose experience of Freeman, Wright and Vaughn. Team composition is similar to JT3’s first season. Entire BE is young, so we will be very competitive. Open practice Oct 12 at McD or Verizon. Oct 22 scrimmage against James Madison and a week later against UNC. Team will have new look and feel.
CHINA: Coached joked that China would no longer be the topic of conversation at BE media day. Good to have international exposure. JT3 eager to see Asia for first time. DeGioia wants to make inroads in China. JT3 sees this as first step in recruiting in China. A clinic in China via Nike may be next step. First game in Beijing was ugly both offensively and defensively. Competition was comparable to elite US college level. Pressure to play 2nd game against the military. It ended up being a good experience for the team in a big picture sense. The Chinese realized they were going to lose, so started to exhibit unsportsmanlike conduct. JT3 wanted to exit earlier, but thought the game was getting back under control. On court fight was not scary because you can see your opponent. The crowd was the frightening part as they were unpredictable and throwing bottles. Getting out of the arena was scary and not captured on YouTube. Team buses were next to each other outside the stadium where the crowd was filing out. There was little to no lighting outside the arena, so the team and entourage b-lined it for the bus. Felt safe at hotel with Biden’s Secret Service staff on guard. Service staff joked that the Hoyas could have used their services that evening. The State Department urged JT3 to craft a carefully worded statement. The Chinese did not like to lose face and this was fast becoming an international incident. In an extreme circumstance, GU players could be jailed or problems could linger in Shanghai. No telling what could transpire in a communist nation. Shanghai was more relaxed as Nike took care of all the logistics. JT3 proud of our players and how they handled themselves.
BE CONFERENCE: Hard to tell the future of the conference. GU should focus on taking care of itself. Football is running the show due to media dollars. Caught by surprise with the Syracuse and Pitt defections. We must move on. We will miss the Syracuse rivalry. BE had 11 in NCAAs last year, while ACC had 4. We are still the better basketball conference top-to-bottom. UNC-Duke-SU-Pitt is a wash with GU-L’Ville-‘Nova-UConn. The rest of the BE is much better than ACC. Each BE school is looking out for its own best interests, including GU. We can’t fault UConn, as they seek to align with one of the future 4 major football conference with 16 teams. Basketball only conference may not generate sufficient revenues. For now, GU would like to keep BE with some new members. TCU can work for other sports as there is not a huge overlap. Football contract with networks promise basketball appearances. ESPN dollars dwarf any revenues from sponsors like Nike. Reed took AD job assuming BE would be in flux. SEC derives 90% of its revenue from football and 10% from basketball. BE is 60% football and 40% basketball. Football dollars drive the bus. BE meeting at GU was no coincidence as we want to be a major player in the talks. Everything is on the table for GU in terms of direction.
GU BRAND/MULTI-SPORT COMPLEX: JT3 is basketball coach first and fund raiser second. Must focus on enhancing the GU brand. Hard for coach to recruit against teams with state-of-the-art facilities. JT3 has done a good job of recruiting with less. We must take care of the facility issue first and then worry about conference alignment. We can control the former. The complex will cost $55 million and approximately $10 million has been raised. This is critical to our survival. We need media exposure to support brand. Facility will benefit all sports and 700+ student athletes. Funds are impediment, not zoning restrictions. We just built science building with $7 stimulus package. We are embarking on a $1.5 billion capital campaign in which $125 million is earmarked for athletics. GU hoops is profitable and makes $8-$10 million per annum to fund the department. Top players are drawn to facilities. Our jersey wall and history only go so far. Some kids/families listen to the big picture pitch, while others don’t.
FRESHMAN: Willing and eager to learn. Very close group. 5 frosh that are skilled. Porter’s recruiting visit to GU was his first time on a plane – and next he is off to China. Otto is a “damn good” player, JT3 stated with a confident smile.

I should note that it was a very strong turnout, perhaps 150 people. While some of the folks in attendance may not have been the "Cafe 31 crowd," I recognized many of them to be staunch supporters of our university in its academic, athletic, cultural and faith-based pursuits. HoNYaSaxa, Nice recap. As I look at your closing paragraph, I hope you didn't think I was taking a shot at the crowd. That was not my intention. I recognize and appreciate the serious support from the dedicated members of the Alliance. If anything, it was a self-directed shot as my usual gathering with GU alums is around Basketball games. Lots of folks shouting, drinking beer and eating pizza while wearing GU gear -- sweatshirts, caps and JT3 T's. There's even one highly visible friend who still shows up in complete Hoya uni, wearing a bulldog mask! JahidiHoya still does this after years, even though he is now married, a dad and has a major executive position with a multi-national firm! At these gatherings, all the talk (at full volume) is about team, players, coaching, the upcoming (or just completed) game, strategy, analysis, great plays, and -- occasionally a little trash talking about our opponent -- especially if its Cuse or U-Con! Quite a different tone than the far more serious one at the GU-Wall St. Alliance. But not a shot at all, just some commentary and contrast with GU events I typically attend. We are all Hoyas supporting Hoya Hoops and the University.

I was not there but had a summary from a friend, am I right to think that you are not able to earmark your donation to just the building of the facilities? If so that is absurd and idiotic. Also, as thebin and JohnJacques pointed out, how is it not in the best interest of the university to borrow from the endowment to get this done so we don't lose our best marketing tool (our bball team) and one of our best money makers?
In the end, I think we need a donor to only pledge x millions if it only goes to facilities and nothing else and force the university to get it done. If this doesn't happen in the next year or two I fear we will lose JT3 and I wouldn't blame him in the least bit for leaving since I know this was a sticking point when he was first hired.......7 years ago.
Finally, again I was not there so please correct my statements if I misrepresented anything.

I assume that once the project is officially launched then you will be able to donate directly. That happens later this month.
