The Jason being kicked photo is now at the top of the WaPo story. Probably will run in the paper, if there is a photo (mostly because it is the best quality and most aesthetically "pleasing" of all the photos so far)
Also, I was not able to access the site where the original photos came from. I cant read Chinese but it appeared that they have been taken down.
Is pops on this trip? Is he doing his radio show today? That's a must listen.
My opinion: enh. No one is hurt, so we will probably all forget about this by September 20. As for lasting effects: I would be shocked if there are any. Recruits wont care. "I don't want to get into a fight with a Chinese Pro team" is not something a top recruit is ever going to think. Miami never had problems recruiting in the 90s when they fought all the time- on second thought maybe it was the strippers and cash that kept them coming...

This trip was about bonding as a team and if they aren't bonded now they never will be. I'm prety sure this experience will be a big overall positive for the team. I agree with this, but I also think this trip was about getting our very, very young team some quality game time, so I do hope they continue to play games through the rest of the trip. If extra security is needed, I do believe the Seventh Fleet is not far off. |

It's a young team, the extra 4 weeks to make them get better together was supposed to help.

With the brawl dominating the media coverage and the message boards, I have questions about the actual game.
For those who were there:
How did the team look overall? Reportedly the Hoyas got off to a slow start which in part could be a result of playing on back-to-back nights.
Who started for the Hoyas?
Did Hollis' ankle appear to be bothering him?
Which Hoyas were most affected by foul trouble?
Which players stood out? Who played well?
How did the freshmen look?
Are the Rockets considered to be better than that Under 23 National Team the Duke Blue Devils played today (trying to get a sense of the quality of the opponent)?

Are the Rockets considered to be better than that Under 23 National Team the Duke Blue Devils played today (trying to get a sense of the quality of the opponent)? I dont know, but they would be older and there fore more physically developed than other players this team has faced so far (yesterdays game or Kenner for example). So that is very good. Need the front court to practice against BE sized guys |

WTEM980 (Loverro and Stern noon show) just now had good discussion of incident, emphasizing the photo of Jason getting stomped as pretty much showing who was to blame ("res ipsa loquitur" as the legal crowd would say) and concluding "We're all Hoya fans today."

Regardless of how it started and who was at fault (if that could ever be determined), this is not a good PR event for the Hoyas. On a "goodwill trip" to China, the team ends up in a brawl with the Chinese team? This will be another black eye on the Hoya program.
On the plus side, however, after seeing the photos and reading the reports, I can't blame the kids for how they responded. In particular, there's a shot of several freshmen -- Porter, Whittington and Starks -- coming to the aid of Clark who was being violently kicked and stomped on while on the floor.
As some have mentioned, the unintended (but positive) bonding impact of this event could end up being a HUGE positive for the team this upcoming season. And if anyone doubted the toughness of our Hoyas based on the last few seasons, that doubt has now been dispelled.
In short, I don't condone brawls of any sort, I am sure the vast majority of our board posters doesn't either. But sometimes a young man has to stand up for himself/defend himself -- and his teammates. Though I would certainly prefer this didn't happen at all, considering the photos and apparent circumstances I give our guys a pass, or even a quiet "well done".

Yikes re: the video. That's a serious melee. Lucky no one was seriously injured. At around the 20 second mark one of the Hoyas (Markel?) gets jumped and absolutely wailed on by a Chinese player until someone comes over and knocks him off.
The Chinese team was definitely the instigator that took this from a rough game and into a full blown brawl. They rushed the court when Jason and the big guy mixed it up (couldn't really see whether there were punches involved) and they did so with the intent to attack Jason Clark as he lay prone on the floor. They picked up the chairs. Just embarrassing on their part.
