Aaron Bowen was absolutely mugged. From the :20-:30 mark of the video, you see multiple guys run him down, pummel him on the ground, and then #5 joins in to throw a chair at his face while he's down there. Jason comes in to blow up #5 and knock the chair out of his hands in the midst of a second attempt (assisted by Moses, I believe). #5 was also the first or second guy off the Baiyi bench at the very beginning of the video. Who is the hoya throwing the chair in that sequence? It's Baiyi #5 throwing the chair. Will edit the OP to make that clear. hm

Im sorry, but I have to say, I agree. I think they should immediately go home. This is only going to play out against them. Do you really think the Chinese govt will spin this even neutrally? I have to believe that cooler heads will prevail and the tour will continue. In fact it would not surprise me if the 2 teams play the rematch tomorrow. Since this is SUPPOSED to be a goodwill tour, those in charge will make it clear(especially to the Chinese team) that nothing like this will be repeated, and that there will be an actual basketball game. The referees will call things a little more evenly to keep things under control. And there will be massive security presence to keep the peace. Oh, and no plastic bottles will be allowed in the gym. Ah yes, that sounds like the China I read about in the papers...

You can keep on waiting. Stance stays the same. Engaging in a fight with a foreign team on their own home court doesn't do anything for the team or program IMO. You can stand up for yourself and your teammates without resorting to exchanging punches. I'm glad the players had each other's backs and in my earlier posts I suggested that the Chinese team was at fault; I didn't want the Hoyas to stoop to their level though. If you and others disagree with that so be it. People arent disagreeing with you. It's just that you are wrong. If 15 people jumped your teammate, are you saying it is stooping to their level to run and protect your teammates? Should III, the team and the coaches have sat there and let it play itself out? You know when opposing baseball teams spill out onto a diamond during heated moments you often get some jostling, a bit of pushing, a lot of pointing and even more stare downs. Most times it doesn’t result in punches and when it does teams with cooler heads try to pull apart the people engaged in the fighting rather than escalating it by throwing their own fists. If Jason is being mobbed by the other team and nothing is being done by it by officials then I can understand the Hoyas rushing to a teammate’s aid. But let’s not have separate mini-brawls break out as a result. Get between your teammate and the other team (push them away if you have to) and wait for your coaches to direct you on what you should do next (like heading to the exit). Try not to make a bad situation any worse especially in front of a crowd that is potentially hostile (and harmful) to you. That’s my take. If anything save the brawling for the Notre Dames or the Pitts or the UConns that push the team around during the BE season. But to take part in something like that during a goodwill trip to another country, even if you are the ones who were attacked first, is not good for the reputation of the program. It just isn’t. And despite the folks crowing on these boards that this was an encouraging sign for Hoya toughness and solidarity, I’m not sure if this dustup proves anything. Again I will wait and see if this toughness shows itself when the Hoyas play the Panthers.

Haven't seen anyone else say it, but the ridiculousness-cherry on the top has got to be that the officials awarded Bayi two free throws after the brawl to tie the score. That alone should tell you what the refs were trying to accomplish.
But I don't agree that they should pack up and come up. Again, having lived there for a couple of years, China is as mixed a bag as anywhere. There are wonderful people there, like those that our players have already met. For a lot of these guys, this is probably their first trip overseas, and it would be a shame to end it on a note like this.
As to whether or not we play Bayi again, my take is that the fix would actually be in...in our favor. The government may spin things when they can, but they also aren't stupid. They don't want to be embarrassed. The best way for them to fix this now is to make sure the next game happens, as cleanly as possible, and that the team has the best time possible the rest of the time they are there. They understand that "controlling" a situation can be much more than just what gets printed; they'll try to control by marginalizing this as much as possible. Especially given how gracious III was in his release, they will want to respond in kind. I might be wrong, but my best guess is that the Chinese response will surprise a lot of the posters here.

Is it too much to ask that someone photoshop JTIII into the Tienanmen square photo of the dude in front of the tanks? We're 13 pages into this and it hasn't happened yet? Unbelievable. My photoshop skills are terrible, but I feel bad that I can't even come up with a good Kurt Shirt theme. Perhaps some PE? III It Takes a Nations of Billions To Hold Us Back (And yes, I'm only joking because it seems no one -- miraculously -- was hurt.) First warm up song for the next game in China...Kung Fu Fighting?

I will like to highlight that JTIII has proven to be a very good leader in crisis situations like this.
Watching him get everyone into the locker room reminded me of that Midnight Madness with the freshman shooting a toilet in McDonough, coach was very calm and skillful in that situation too

We left the court, right? Surprised the refs bothered with the free throws and didn't just declare a forfeit.

Again I will wait and see if this toughness shows itself when the Hoyas play the Panthers. I understand your point, but I really don't see what Georgetown could have done any differently. Sure, Jason could have avoided shoving or punching and the guys could have avoided throwing any punches that were thrown (it's unclear exactly what happened). In my opinion, the only way to avoid what happened here would have been to avoid playing this game. Clearly, emotions were running high when the brawl broke out and I don't think it would have taken much for this to happen, even if Jason had acted differently. The concerns about reputation to the program are overblown. First, in a month nobody will be talking about this since we'll be looking forward to the season. Sure, it might come up during some broadcasts, but is a 16 year old going to say, "I'm not coming to Georgetown because they were involved in a brawl in China?" I don't think so. Also, for these kids who have been playing basketball for most of their lives, I'm sure they've seen a brawl or two in their day. Honestly, I think this reflects more on China and the Chinese team (and their fans) than on the Hoyas. This could have easily been any other college program. Moreover, we're still a far classier program than many other Division I basketball programs and that is in large part due to John Thompson III. None of that has changed. That said, I agree that we cannot predict success this season based on what happened today.
