Coming from a recruiting dummy - are either of theose two guards back on the radar post UMCP coach shuffle? Were we ever involved with either?

1) Maybe. They haven't asked for a release, but it will depend on the hire and who is retained among the assistants. 2) Not really involved, but either would be a good addition to the class and would have a chance to play a lot early. I hope we've at least made inquiries.

That particular story came on the night of Gary's retirement. Since then, I believe Gibbs and Faust have said that they will wait until the hiring situation becomes a little more clear before choosing whether or not to reopen.

Turbo, you aren't a dummy--if anything, you should be thankful you are not as connected to recruiting and are far smarter then any of us who follow it intently. Faust would be interesting--but don't think he'd come. Gibbs would go somewhere else.

Faust isn't a point though. I would think that any last-minute addition to this class would be a point.
Of course maybe Faust is just that good. I was initially hoping the Hoyas would get involved but I wonder where his minutes would come from next season - especially since Hollis is going to be looking for some of those minutes at the "2".

RDF - I read all the stuff you guys write, I just don't know any of the unspoken rules of recruiting that lead some to say that since recruit X switched AAU programs there is now zero chance of that recruit coming to Gtown... or all the shoe company politics, the handlers, runners, agents, baskteball factories masked as academies blah blah blah that seem to dominate college recruiting... Sounds like in both these cases there isn't a flashing red light but we are very unlikely to be in the mix.

I have heard that Faust can play the point.

I've seen a lot of people compare Faust to Steph Curry in his stroke and feel for the game. Even if he's half that good, he's pretty damn good. Total speculation, but I think we could at least make a case in that we're local and we have PT to offer pretty soon at either guard slot. Probably means no Gabe York or DSR, but who knows if those guys end up on the Hilltop.

UPDATE: According to a story today by Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com, Maryland signee Sterling Gibbs has asked for his release from the Terrapins and new coach Mark Turgeon.
Gibbs' AAU coach Gary Charles confirmed the point guard's decision in a phone interview with Zagoria.
"He wants the release," Charles told the web site. "The family has asked for the release and they're waiting to see if they can get the release.
According to Charles, Miami, Florida, Louisville, Seton Hall, Providence, Texas and Colorado all have contacted him about Gibbs.

Apparently Gary didn't even notify him that he was retiring. That's pretty messed up. He found out when everyone else did. You would think he'd call his players and recruits who were coming in to let them know.

According to ESPN, another Terp has asked out of his letter of intent:
UPDATE: Power forward Martin Breunig (Leverkusen, Germany/St. John's Military Academy) became the second signee in Maryland's 2011 recruiting class to request a release from his letter of intent, joining point guard Sterling Gibbs.

Wow, it's enough to make a grown man want to set a couch on fire. Mark, if that was too subtle for you, PLEASE, please set a couch on fire. This could be your Jackie Sherrill moment, these people will worship you AS A GOD if you do it.

At this point should we go after Faust (a SG)? Or should we hold the schollie for 2012? I mean Faust is a 6'6" SG which would make us DEADLY TALL this year.

Frankly the only reason why I would want to do it would be to Edited of the maryland fans.

Frankly the only reason why I would want to do it would be to Edited of the maryland fans. Agreed. But with the lack of depth at the guard position, picking up a top 40 SG in Faust is not a bad goal... He likely wants to stay close to home (something we can offer) so we probably have a decent chance. We could kill two turtles with one stone.
