Seems like a timely topic for today. Rep. Ryan and Rep. Bachmann are scheduled to give responses.

My understanding is that they are separate speeches. Ryan is giving the traditional party-backed response, and Bachmann is giving a speech for the Tea Party establishment.
The combination is weird, but maybe it just gives Obama's opponents more time to throw stuff against the wall.

Ugh. This is going to go on for an eternity.
This is not a partisan "ugh," just in case you were wondering.
Isn't there a Jersey Shore marathon I can watch or something?
(Actually, I think Purdue-OSU is going to be a very good game, so I'll probably watch SOTU on replay.)

Yeah, that's pretty much my plan. I think I might watch Ryan's speech, just because I haven't had a chance to see him give a speech like this before. I've seen Obama though, and I don't need to watch the clapping/sitting. Anything "big" like a Joe Wilson will get replayed ad nauseum--no reason to see that live. I will not be watching Michelle Bachmann--the country has no need for media [what's another word for whores in this context that takes the sexism angle out of it?]. Ryan is going to have a major part in any success the country has solving its problems, Bachmann is a media personality.

Yep, I always read it.
The clapping is annoying. The responses are dumb -- either party. And the commentary that discusses "who won" instead of whether the proposal is a good idea is downright idiotic.

I'm surprised that someone (Slate?) hasn't come out with a generic SOTU speech to see how close it is to the real thing.
"The economy was down but it's showing signs of improving" "The stimulus was great. Here's one small business helped by the stimulus that proves the billions were worth it" "Rep. Giffords is nice. Let's all be nice to each other." "I love the troops" "Where's Alito? Blah Blah Blah

Two thoughts on Bachmann:
1) I didn't know it was possible to be more orange than Boehner.
2) Raccoon eyes are not becoming on anyone
No, I'm not actually listening.

After Paul Ryan, I thought Michele Bachmann actually had a chance to do better.
Ten minutes later I don't know what I was thinking.

I am sure Paul Ryan is talented, but his address was cold, shibboleth-laden, and short on facts and ideas. I hope the work of his committee is a better reflection of his talent and reflects the growth that appears necessary in his work.

Predicting the SOTU would have been almost as fun as a III press conference. It might have been even more fun to try the Republican response. But I never could have come up with the safety net/safety hammock thing. It was the best line of the night behind Obama's smoked salmon. I immediately wondered if I can get a safety hammock from the Hammock District in Cypress Creek.

Guru - I give him the benefit of the doubt to be honest, and that venue is not usually the best to showcase talent. It is hard to remember the last time a response was memorable in a good way despite all of the good folks who have been called upon to give a response, and his response was no different. It sounded like the thing was turned over to someone in an RNC cubicle and looked like it was delivered by Eddie Munster.

Cornel West just had the best criticism of Bachmann's speech that I think you could have - you've got Paul Ryan - rising star in the Republican Party, you're getting him some air time nationally - why would you want to have that second address to overshadow him, especially when the substance of his address really lined up better with the Tea Party's stated aims than Bachmann's did.

More serious thoughts: *The hammock line was clunky/bad. Ryan missed a chance there, b/c I thought his speech was pretty clear and the setup for that line was good. The speech wasn't big on detail, but I'm not sure that's a the way to go in a rebuttal, especially if the speech is about the budget. Simple & clear principles seems the way to go. I did like the "investment actually means more frivolous spending" line. *"Win the future"? "Sputnik moment?" First one sounds like a bad movie tag line, the second seems cliche--how many Sputnik moments have we had since Sputnik? Also, the cost of the Apollo program was 1/7th that of the stimulus in inflation adjusted dollars: www.nationalreview.com/corner/257942/about-sputnik-moment-daniel-foster*I liked the education part. Race to the Top seems like it's helping. I'll also believe that Obama's willing to take on the Teachers' Unions when he takes on the Teachers' Unions. *I like the idea of tax reform and tort reform. *I'll believe Obama plans on removing regulations when he does so. I noticed he didn't have any specific ones to mention... *Freezing gov't spending at current levels is not going to do anything to help the deficit. And saving $400 billion over 10 years is a drop in the bucket. *It's nice the President wants to find a solution for the Social Security problem. Does he have one? Didn't sound like it.

I agree that Obama's speech was short on the concrete, but he's dealing with the reality. Every time he proposes something concrete, certain folks in Congress refuse to allow a debate on it. The numbers on that do not lie. What he did tonight rhetorically was to set some goals and ask the people now controlling the House and who have slowed the wheels in the Senate to fill the gap. What I heard was a President asking people who claim to believe in personal responsibility to take personal responsibility.
Contrast that with the doomsday talk from Ryan and the blame Obama stuff that was so 2010, and it is easy to see how the plan falls apart.
