You're on the side of the neighbors? Really? To be honest, I have a hard time pinning down exactly what was so terribly wrong about the OP individual or ANC commissioner's behavior. Were any actual laws or even procedural guidelines violated? If you go back and substitute "DeGioia" for "Lewis" in the original article, would the anti-University neighbors have had an equally legitimate basis for grievance? Yes they would. Which is why it is terribly wrong. Edited--Admin

The fact that they happen everywhere doesn't mean it's any less infuriating. What it does say is, perhaps, just perhaps, the neighbors have some legitimate complaints that students are not willing to acknowledge. The neighbors do have some legitimate concerns: students should be held to the same legal and civil standards of conduct as all other adults. Fortunately, the university has provided additional channels through which to raise complaints and address behavior of individual students. If a problematic neighbor was not a student, the complainant would have no such recourse. Being a bad neighbor is generally not a crime. A lot of this falls under the "if you give a mouse a cookie" principle - if you give neighbors something like SNAP and introduce the concept that students may face university discipline for off-campus behavior, then they will take it several levels further and decide there's nothing wrong with the university acting as omnipresent parental figure, telling them where and how to live at all times. This, to me, is not legitimate. It doesn't help when said complains are lodged in a manner that clearly demonstrates an attitude of extreme entitlement and arrogance. If you have some spare time, feel free to read through the submissions in opposition to the Campus Plan that are on the Zoning Commission's website. The author of exhibit 263 describes students as "human rodents." The author of exhibit 167 writes of intolerable incidents such as: "May 17th, around 7 pm. I place an “our homes” sign in my front garden. One of the “problem” women from next door is sitting on her front steps, talking on her cell phone. She glares at me in a challenging manner while I am in my garden, but says nothing. I note that she only makes comments when she is with other people with whom she feels safe.”There is a segment of this population that located in Georgetown thinking they were going to live in 1950s Smallville, not the middle of a major urban area, immediately adjacent to the largest employer in the District of Columbia. These are the sorts of people MPD 2nd District Commander Andy Solberg was talking to when he said "black people are unusual in Georgetown. This is a fact of life." It's not a fact of life - it's a fact of these particular people's lives and their mentality. And they'd like to keep it that way, thank you very much. I should add that this is just the student behavior part; most of the other complaints (e.g. GUTS buses are destroying my house foundation! There will be wild bacchanalia on the roof of Yates!) are nonsensical.

Georgetown is the largest PRIVATE employer. GW is the next biggest. Then Washington Hospital Center, I believe.
By the way, hearing is continued to November 17. In other news, I'm exhausted.

So the talk with the continuance was that the parties would try to work towards a compromise in the meantime. Obviously not going to really happen between Georgetown and the Neighbors, but any chance we can sway DDOT, and the OP to be on our side? Sounded like they were going to consider alternatives to the currently proposed loop road. Are we really and if so what are the alternatives?

Tangent: Russky, G'town is the largest employer in the District? Bigger than the Fed Gov.? Source? Yes, private employer. If one were to count the federal government as one employer - which doesn't make a whole lot of sense, given how different and autonomous various agencies can be - it would be tops, followed by the DC government. Here's the source: www.bizjournals.com/washington/blog/2011/02/howard-no-longer-dcs-top-employer.html1. Georgetown University 2. George Washington University 3. Washington Hospital Center 4. *sigh* Who needs a nice, picturesque pedestrian walkway through the heart of campus when you can have a bus turnaround instead?

would love to see a drawing of the new proposed route. Because right now it's confusing.
I just hate that we continue to give in to Neighbors demands and it does us no good.
1) the burlieth people could care less about this concession.
2) the fox hall people who this effects still will not be on our side after this concession.
3) does it really help us with the commission since the neighbors will still attack us?

The route will come in Canal the usual way, wind around the SW Quad, turn north on Tondorf past MSF, and then turn around in the large open space north of Harbin and south of the new science center. Many will literally get picked up or dropped off at the doorstep of their classroom, office, or dorm room.

The continuation is supposed to be limited to DDOT issues, this being the primary one. The basic idea is that the Foxhall people - the primary opponents of the Loop Road - will be appeased. With their objection removed, their Councilmember Mary Cheh - who is chair of the Transportation Committee - will no longer feel pressured to direct DDOT (yes, technically she has no authority to do so, and yes, this happens all the time, including in this instance, where she and Evans pressured DDOT behind the scenes, even while Wells was chair) to oppose the plan. The longer view is that this is going to end up in court anyway, and with the DC Court of Appeals being less partisan and more objective than all of these DC politicians and administrative bodies, the repeated demonstrations of the university bending itself backwards in appeasement will convince the judges to rule our way.
