Brandon Bowman is #15 on that list. I wouldn't describe him as an elite shot blocker. I'm not saying Vaughn is a bad shot blocker. In fact, he is a pretty decently good one. Just saying we could use another legit presence/shot blocker to pair with him down low. Vaughn is not the type of player that Roy Hibbert was that he can single-handedly alter shots and command the paint on defense. We need more big bodies to go along with Vaughn and Sims is our best bet right now.

Also - in this post by HP they posted the defensive ratings for our guys last year for BIG EAST play only. Though defensive rating is not always a great stat, Vaughn did have the worst number on the team during Big East play. hoyaprospectus.blogspot.com/2010/11/empty-glass-hoya-prospectus-worst.htmlAgain, I just don't see him holding it down by himself on defense once the opponents start getting bigger. Henry can help!

Jake, you've gone from "Vaughn is not much of a shot blocker" to "he is a pretty decently good one". Bowman was a good shot blocker for a forward. Not to worry, JV will have Nate, Henry, JB and Hollis to help inside.

There is certainly a difference between being a body inside and being a force. Not sure all of them will be a force.

Yes, I was wrong to characterize him as not much of a shot blocker - the numbers show i am at least partly wrong there.
My point though was meant more that he's not a big presence on defense and he doesn't alter a lot of shots, etc. And specifically, he hasn't been a big presence on defense when it comes to Big East time, where both his defense and blocked shots numbers have gone down.
Bowman was a very good shot blocker for the type of player he was, but my point there was that nobody is going to claim that he was an elite shot blocker or a big defensive presence. If you look at the list the top 7 or 8 guys are way, way above the rest.
Hollis and JB are not going to help inside much in the Big East... sorry, they're not. I think both of them can play serviceable defense at the 3, but not with the big boys. Nate might be able to if he develops... but right now Sims looks like our best bet to do it and it's why I am desperately hoping he gets more and more time.

Great job by Henry today! He was leader of the run that put game away and for 3 minutes--he was a dominant player--rebounding, steal, his drive to hoop might have been biggest hoop of game in terms of pushing lead back to comfortable margin-gets a blocked shot and just did a fine job.
Proud of everyone in the program for the effort and intensity they've brought and Henry is near top---he's doing what is needed and what will make him a better player. Great job!

From WP today: "Henry Sims came in and gave us a big boost for stretches there in the second half," Thompson said. "After today, we are going to expect that from him on a going-forward basis."

But Bowman's 100 blocks number is over four seasons, while Julian's reflects 2 seasons with the Hoyas (plus four games this season). Vaughn's not an Alonzo-caliber shot blocker, but saying his defensive presence is on par to Brandon's is just using bad math.

I have made more posts about Henry since his freshman year than any other topic. The reason for that is that I thought he was the missing piece from a back up and flexibility standpoint for a team that could go far. He has not been that piece in the past and it was clear from early in the season that this was the case. Maybe he is finally there, but a lot of the pieces present in the past years are gone. Just dumb luck that this team will need him to be good and not great.

Is Moses actually going to play? I just don't see him getting minutes over Sims, Nate, and Benimon, and there are not too many minutes out there.

I'm just saying you can't throw out the "but he's top 20 in hoya history" stat like he's an elite shot blocker because there are a bunch of people on that list who are NOT elite shot blockers. that list is not a good indication - THAT is using bad math.

Yeah, but in Big East play (which is when Moses will be back) we've seen, for years, coach play guys who know the system and have experience over new guys. I don't think the Benimonster is going to be relegated to garbage minutes anytime soon. I see him getting more run than Moses in crunch time/Big East games.

The great thing about the Sims performance is that it shows that certain elements of his game have tightened up and he can actually now look at film and not have to worry about the very basic stuff.
One thing that jumped out is how Sims clears rebounds. He got caught bringing the ball behind his head a couple of times. Need to stay strong. Don't be afraid to throw an elbow. MEANERY UP!
