One of those signs that quantitative and qualitative analysis are two different things: two different opinions that Austin had a "decent but not typical" and "mediocre" game. The term "bored" thrown out there.
He had 28 points. ;D
Not trying to make a point here, I just found it amusing.

I remember all the high school reports of him commenting over and over how he almost snuck up on you with 20 pt games. Austin plays at a baseline of like 20 points in Kenner (and like 12 in BE play) and then its that difference between great and brilliant that we've been spoiled with and qualify as mediocre/average and good. If I really think about it Austin probably objectively had a very good game considering all the trips he made to the line and the nonchalant threes he sent home. It's just that I've been spoiled to expect the second half against UCONN last year in every game.

I will jump the gun and ask....is this potentially the best collection of perimeter talent for the Hoyas in a long, long time? Perhaps ever? Obviously right now no one is projecting to be an Iverson or a Sleepy Floyd or a Reggie Williams. Not as of right now. But all these guys on the same team at once (Austin, Chris, Jason, Hollis, Vee, Markel and Aaron) is pretty impressive. Obviously the two sophs have more to prove and the two frosh have yet to play a real college game. However the potential for this group appears to be through the roof.

We are pretty darn deep....but still un proven.we know what chris, Jason, and Austin will do...and we have high hopes for Hollis...but little is known about the rest. I do agree that this is the deepest backcourt since '84....still would take iverson and page over Freeman and wright.

I'm leaning towards taking AI and Page only because of Iverson. Page had his moments during his first season but he was wildly inconsistent and often downright invisible (moreso than Chris last season). And to be honest Iverson could be all over the place (in a bad way) at times, although he got much better his soph season. But after Iverson and Page who else did you have that year? Nichols? Toumo? Dayjack? Does Aw count because he played the SF position? I'm sorry but those other three guards could not get minutes on this current GTown team.

I think our depth at the 1-2-3 is sick. I certainly can't remember a Hoya team that was deeper at those positions. I'm not quite ready to annoint Austin and Chris among the *all-time* greats, but I agree they are very good. But that's kind of a different question: the backups (and the backups to the backups) are looking very quality IMO.
In the first half, I actually thought Markel was the best player on the floor. In the second, it was Julian.

If Austin has a season as good or better than last season, then I'm willing to consider him as a top ten Hoya. Seriously. Especially if he becomes an All American and if he wins (or is in strong contention) for BE Player of the Year. Dosn't matter to me if he doesn't play great defense. I'm still trying to figure out if he is the first returning Hoya guard (since my time following the team) who was on an All Big East Team for the previous season. I know Iverson was not First Team Big East his freshmen year but maybe he was on the second team. I'm not sure if Kevin Braswell made any Big East Team his junior season. Is there anyone else to consider? Joey Brown?

Kevin Braswell was 2nd team as a junior and third team as a senior.

Thanks, Chris. I wasn't going to bring up Smith because I wasn't following Hoya basetball when he was a junior. But I appreciate your clearing all that up for me. Bras went from second team to third team, huh?

This team reminds me more of the 89' Team with there talented depth at guard. This team also is very unproven outside of Austin and Chris. Potentially (Very big word here) I feel this team could trump the 89' team. But until the year plays out 89' gets the nod.
Oh yeah, It also wouldn't hurt if Austin wins that POY this year or guides this team to the Reg Season/BE Torney or both. That would solidify his legacy and agree with someome above he would be in the conversation of top ten in my book.
Charles Smith (BE Player of the Year) Mark Tillmon Dwayne Bryant Jaren Jackson Bobby Winston

How is Jason "very unproven" though, bigmanu?

How is Jason "very unproven" though, bigmanu? Okay, not on the level of Austin & Chris. All Big East First team caliber or even just consistent difference makers in the starting lineup. Right know Jason is just a streaky starter. I want him to be a difference maker in every game. He had great games last year mainly stroking the three ball. I want to see him be more than a spot up shooter and lock down his man on D. I hope Jason and you prove me wrong. That would be a win win situation.

Jason's primarily role this year is to lock down the other team's outide scorer on D, just ask him

The '84 team was ridiculously deep all around. At the 1-3 positions we had Jackson, Wingate, Brown, Gene Smith, Broadnax, Reggie and Bill Martin (although he generally played more a 4 role). I take it as a good overall sign of the health of the program that we can be comparing this year's depth to some of the better Hoya teams of the past.

It's the best depth at the 1 & 2 since I've been a fan. It speaks to the depth that people seem to be thinking of Austin as a 3, because he's usually playing there.

I was just looking over the all-BE selections from last spring. Amazingly, I don't think any of them is returning this year (Dom Jones is the only one I'm a little unsure of). Even the second team has only Austin and two others returning. That certainly puts Austin in the right position for honors this year if he performs well.

If you look at some of the games toward the end of the year, Jason was taking the ball to the basket quite well.
