In related news, I'm pretty sure we just named Nathan R. Jessup as head of CENTCOMM. And I don't mean that as a criticism.

Sorry to let you down Boz, but Gen. Mattis is actually one of the most thoughtful and insightful thinkers to be found in the military today.
It's only by the grace of God that the damp-panties crowd at the New York Times, etc. has thus far failed in their attempts to discredit him.

I thought the HBO series Generation Kill was excellent.

I thought the HBO series Generation Kill was excellent. I haven't seen the series, but the book is definitely worth reading

McChrystal's retirement speech, if anyone is interested: www.mudvillegazette.com/033825.htmlListening to this speech I can see how this would be a general lots of soldiers would want to serve under......and how he's still someone who should have never given an interview to Rolling Stone. No, seriously, its a good speech if you have some time.

No, seriously, its a good speech if you have some time. McChrystal comes off looking really badly when he mocks his wife. At every retirement or promotion ceremony I've been to, the guest of honor is always self-deprecating, never saying anything bad about the spouse, even in jest.

I thought it was in good fun. Mocking seems strong.

I thought it was in good fun. Mocking seems strong. Mocking is probably too strong, but the usual thing for retirement is for the honoree to relate some cute story about leading troops into the field and coming home to being entirely unsure of how to pay the mortgage or managing a multi-million dollar program and yet forgetting the six changes to the kids' after-school schedule that have occurred since noon. I've never heard any word said against the spouse, even in the lightest joking terms. I have no personal or professional quarrel with McChrystal. But the tone struck me.
