I forgot about this part of the story: UCF officials say they reached an agreement with adidas regional representatives to allow Jordan to wear Nike shoes despite the school's exclusive adidas contract. Higher-level adidas corporate officials later objected to Jordan being allowed to wear a competitor's shoes. UCF stood by the promise it made to Jordan that he could wear his father's shoes. What a jerk! This "agreement" has no bearing on little Jordan's conduct. It's completely irrelevant to the issue at hand. It's not like Jordan came to the school with the knowledge he would be granted an exception. The alleged agreement (as stated by the UCF officials) was probably agreed to by someone without authorization and the agreement happened entirely BECAUSE Jordan made this stink. It's not like the alleged agreement was the cause of his whining |

Yes, KC , you are biased. You obviously heart Jordan and Nike. It comes across like that at least. That would explain the meltdown you're basically having in this thread whenever any of us dares to say anything negative about Jordan, his spawn and that company he is associated at the hip with. Yeah, I don't like Jordan. But that doesn't man I'm going to come down hard on him for nothing. I have to have a reason to be critical of him and I think this incident is worthy of such criticism. His son comes across even worse IMO. And just because I have a dislike for someone doesn't mean my criticism of that person is lacking in credibility or born out of mere resentment. I dislike George Bush. So by your logic my disagreement, from the very beginning, of going to war in Iraq is tainted, irrational and biased, right? Then I guess anyone who doesn't like someone should be excluded from ever being critical of that individual's actions, huh? How wonderful. As for my opinion of their character, welll, its simply an opinion. I never said to anyone they had to accept that as fact. So....to state it once more...father + son = jerks. |

I still think it's somewhat curious that any college kid would be under the presumption that he "needs" this or that particular item -- be it a shoe, a sock, a jockstrap or anything else. Secondly, I think such an attitude is a formula for controversy at best.

A lot of other posters seem perfectly capable of criticizing kid Jordan without calling him a jerk or spawn. "father + son = jerks" -- what an intelligent, well thought-out argument. By the way, here's what the UCF coach had to say:
"He's been a super teammate," Speraw said. "He's been very humble about everything and he's going to be a great representative to our university over the course of his career."
Sounds like the kid is a total jerk. Of course, MCI knows the kid much better than his own coach.

I think the publicity forced the issue. If some unknown player did not wear adidas no one would care or write about it but here adidas would be paying millions for story after story about Jordan refusing to wear their shoes.

I fail to see why the Jordans are being criticized. During his recruitment and prior to his enrollment, they specifically asked if the kid could wear Jordans and was told that he could. Based on that representation (and other factors, I assume), Jordan enrolled. Now it turns out that UCF failed to clear the exception with the right level of authority at Adidas and national Adidas rescinded the waiver. My question is - where do you draw the line? Will the Jordans next be upset that the son can't wear a Jumpman sweat band or not wear shorts with the Jumpman logo on them?
I share MCI's opinion of MJ. As a unbiased/recovering Knicks fan, I just can't stand the guy.

I could see a school having a tie to a particular ball manufacturer for instance. Then I could see a conflict between a school and a conference for instance. Also, warmups would be a natural potential conflict as well. Granted, we don't appear to be headed to a controversy over uniforms, but give it time. |

BINGO....only reason this is an issue from experience if you blacked out the shoe's logo from something other than the school's sponsor noone really cares. |

I really think people are trying to extrapolate this out further than you need to. Michael Jordan has the biggest sports shoe/apparel line on the planet (tied to one individual). His kid wants to wear his dad's shoes. Seriously, how often is this going to come up? Tiger's kid when he goes to Stanford to play golf? Lebron's kids? This is a 1 in a billion circumstance. |

Pretty much everyone is at fault.
UCF is at fault 1) for not clearing this to the proper level and 2) for caving in to the Jordans in the first place.
The Jordans are at fault for wanting this exception in the first place.

why would Nike care what Jordan's kids wear? Its not like either of them are good enough to be significant contributors at a high major college, much less have any kind of pro prospects.

And he chose to go to a school that has a contract with Adidas stating that all players on the team wear Adidas sneakers. Say what you want about Adidas, when push came to shove, he apparently chose not to give in and cost his school's athletic department three million dollars. THREE. MILLION. DOLLARS. To an athletic department! Without knowing too much legal detail about this, it wouldn't shock me if Nike stepped in and offered up a contract to "save the day" as it were. UCF really needs $3 million and Nike would come off looking good. |

I know it doesn't apply very often right now, but the question was "where does it end?" As soon as you go down this road, then I could easily see the problem only getting worse.
As for the ball issue, I was just making an example. I could see where a particular university signed a contract with Voit or Spalding or any particular company that makes basketballs. I expect that the NCAA oversees this, but I'm not sure. Again, I was just making an example. I could certainly see a situation where a conference signs its own agreements, which end up being binding on all confernce teams. Yet again, just an example of why going down this path to begin with, is a bad idea.
