After a summer of too much traveling, I'm looking forward to putting my feet up with a Bloody Mary next Saturday morning and absorbing some gridiron action.
Week 1 Picks for Games That Matter:
Utah over Utah State in the Battle of the Brothers (Thursday) Boise State over Oregon (Thursday) Ohio State over Navy Notre Dame squeaks past Nevada Baylor over Wake Forest Oklahoma State over UGA Mizzou over Illinois in what is being sold as The Arch Rivalry (But is this a football rivalry? It's certainly a basketball rivalry, but this matchup marks only the 23rd meeting on the grid between these two schools.) Oklahoma over BYU (live from JerryWorld!) Alabama over Va. Tech Cal over UMD in a revenge game LSU over U-Dub Colorado over Colorado State in the Rocky Mountain Showdown (Sunday) Cincinnati over Rutgers (Monday) Florida State over Miami (Monday)
Apologies to the rest of you for giving hifi a reason to frequent HoyaTalk, but at least this annual thread keeps him off the basketball board to some degree. And hopefully it can inspire at least one classic RDF rant.

I can't believe how Miami is opening up this season:
@ FSU GT @ VT OU
All ranked 18th or better. That is a a crazy ass start.

State in the first real game of the year doesn't even make the list? As for your picks, I think Georgia will take care of business. Sure, Ok St. returns almost all of their defense ... But their defense was pathetic. Georgia has still put together solid recruiting classes year after year. Their QB replacing Stafford is a guy who's been in the system for 4 years. I see him as a solid, if not spectactular triggerman. Also, Ga. suffered tons of injuries last year, especially on the offensive line. That forced them to play guys who really weren't ready. While they took a couple of lumps last year, that normally helps you in the long run. I think Georgia sticks with the Cowboys and pulls it out in the end. Perhaps the game I'm looking forward to the most, is Oregon at Boise St. I think that game could go either way, but given just a couple of comments that I heard one of the National pundits, I think I'm going to follow his line of thinking and pick Oregon to pull the mild upset.

Its more of a "control of the valuable downstate market" rivalry.
But I agree with your prediction

I see no reason to include Florida-Troy next week either.
Way to really get after it in the non conference part of the schedule.

LSU sophomore QB Jordan Jefferson is one to keep an eye on.

While I admit that Charleston Southern is essentially a waste of time, don't sell Troy short. They have grown their program from total obscurity in a relatively short period of time. I think they have won their conference and gone to a second tier bowl, 3 years in a row. There's nothing embarrassing about having a team like that on your schedule. Remember, they were also up by 3 touchdowns AT LSU last year, before coming up short. As for this week's game, well, the spokesman from Charleston Southern said it best. He said something along the lines of, while not very attractive of a matchup for fans of either team, it is an absolute necessity for their program, and they thanked Florida for giving them the chance for the "exposure" -- translated, the half-million dollar payday.

Yeah, he's an under the radar guy right now, but if LSU is going to live up to their hype this year, I think he will have to put up decent numbers and take care of the ball. In fact, I wouldn't argue that he will be the 3rd best QB in the SEC after Tebow and Snead.

I have absolutely no interest in watching S. Carolina and N.C. State slop around the field for a few hours. I've got better ways to waste time on a Thursday evening. Oregon on the blue turf, on the other hand, is going to be great. Oklahoma State is certainly expecting an improved defense, but that has much more to do with the hiring of Bill Young as DC than any returning starter. Interesting that you are so confident in a QB making his first start on the road in a hostile environment. If Cox tears up the Cowboys, bravo for him, but I think it's more likely he puts UGA at a disadvantage in turnover margin early. Its more of a "control of the valuable downstate market" rivalry. But I agree with your prediction Illinois hasn't defeated the Tigers since this series was renewed in 2002, so it's easy to pick the Tigers to win this contest. Also, I lived downstate for two years as a kid (during the Jeff George era), and there's nothing valuable around those parts unless you're talking about the corn crop. In other news, is everybody ready to really hate Doug Marrone? The guy really, truly, and honestly LOVES Syracuse University. sports.espn.go.com/ncf/preview09/columns/story?columnist=maisel_ivan&id=4422293

Austin, our "differences" aside, I respect your opinion. And I must admit that I might be an SEC homer in this regard, but I don't expect Cox to implode like many other "first time starters .... on the road, nonetheless" might. Don't get me wrong though, as I will certainly not lose any sleep if the puppies run into some trouble in Stillwater.
Enough on that though ....
As to the other point, while I guess I will root -- at least passively so -- for the old ball coach, I also won't, even tangentially tire myself doing so for Friday ... let alone Saturday. Still ... while I admit that I am actually looking forward to the Oregon-Boise St. contest much more than the "Battle of the Linas" ... ugh ... I still think that excluding that game, especially since it is the feature "Primetime" game on the very first day of the season is questionable, at best. The fact that the spread is 5 1/2 or thereabouts, should only cement my argument. But again .... I don't have a dog in this fight.

To clarify: .... I need a pick Dammittt .....
That game is in our pool, and I don't want to start off 0-1! ...
Nuff said, who's winning the game between "our" former coach -- in Spurrier -- and FSU's former Ass. -- in assistant coach Amato ... ....
oops ...
OK ... I don't have a dog in the fight ... but maybe, one of my "neighbors" and an acquaintance of Mr. Vick did in fact, know someone who knew someone at the cleaners that went out with a friend of Ferris .... must be serious ...
Pick on that game?

P.S. before anyone thinks otherwise .... I know Ass. Amato isn't still there. Much to his chagrin ...

Btw, rumor on the Ok State vs. UGA game is that the UGA starting QB has the flu and won't play. (I know, not a rumor board, but this has nothing to do with basketball).

St. Pete, I haven't heard that. Joe Cox is the guy's name I think. I did see that Zach Robinson was doubtful for Ok. St. though.

BYU's defense would be awesome if they would just stop committing dumb penalties.
And the Virginia I-AA schools are making a name for themselves over the ACC, with W&M taking off UVA, Richmond abusing Duke and JMU has a crack at the Terps next week.

So how's your weekend going, ACC?
NC State puts up a 3 spot at home in a nationally televised game on Thursday.
Duke and UVA lose at home to FCS opponents--were either of these results surprising? Nope.
Wake Forest falls short in a chance to show their non-conference worth at home against Baylor.
Va Tech for the 432,546,753,844,985,543,349th time in a row gags it against a Top 10 opponent...least they made out better than Clemson last year.
Maryland's down 31-6 at the half.
Aaaaaaaaaaand Miami and FSU agreed to play on Labor Day again, which mean the over-under should be roughly my age (27).
There's a cozy spot in a half empty Land Shark Stadium waiting this January for whichever 4 loss ACC team wins the tiebreaker and whoever wins the other Labor Day game (Cincinnati-Rutgers). Blech.

Notre Dame squeaks past Nevada I was also figuring this to be a close game. I liked Tenuta calling the defensive plays. If Notre Dame ever decides to join a conference, I hope it's the WAC. These last two games have been fun to watch.
