DFW, I obviously don't care about/haven't researched Gillispie's contract, but that is what I have heard as well. I wouldn't doubt it. There are a bunch of ignorant hillbillies up there, and if you put one in charge, then ...
nevermind ...
I don't think they really want Calipari, but they think they do. They should look at guys like Anthony Grant and Mike Anderson, but they are too ... shall we say, antiquated. They do really want Donovan, if they can't have Pitino back. What they should try to do is get someone like Tubby was before they ran him out of town. But I'm not complaining ...

Here's an article referencing the contract. It reads, in part, "Barnhart said terms of the buyout were still in negotation but would be less than the $6 million spelled out in the university’s Memorandum of Understanding that went into effect at Gillispie’s hiring. The coach and the university could never agree on a contract." www.courier-journal.com/article/20090327/SPORTS03/90327020/1002/SPORTSKentucky takes the short term damage but I think may hurt Gillispie in the longer run. Is he still a seven figure coach or was he playing above his weight class when UK panicked two years ago and couldn't land a bigger name? And what does it say about a new coach that won't sign a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract--how committed will he be at the next job if a better deal comes along? Such is the high-risk, high-reward world of SEC coaching.

hmm i definitely read that in an earlier article on the subject. He'll still get paid a heck of a lot of money. A lot more than any of us make in a year most likely.

Bay, actually I read one journalist comment that he was surprised that Kentucky never even thought of Grant. Personally, I think Grant was waiting for some reason, other than just to give it more thought. Either he thought there was some chance that Billy might leave Florida and that he might come here or he thought that he might get some interest from one of the other profile jobs -- Kentucky, Arizonz or maybe UVa. But that is just a hunch.

In a more serious vein than my last post in this thread, keep your eye on Travis Ford.

Man, desperate times in Lexington. Looks like they are willing to give up any semblance of ethics in order to get back on the college basketball map.

In a more serious vein than my last post in this thread, keep your eye on Travis Ford. Cat's Pause (which I glance at every so often to reassure myself that my message board habit isn't excessive) fans hate it, and I can't say I blame them. Ford, in theory, is the perfect golden boy, a UK alum, who understands that he will be coaching in a maelstrom surrounded by raving lunatics. Oh, and he will say yes. But he has made the NCAAs twice. This year was his best job ever, when his team made the NCAA second round. In three years at UMass, he never made the NCAAs. Kentucky fans would give him three years - maybe - to make the Elite 8. It took Jamie Dixon - almost certainly a better coach - six years to the same.

If the numbers that have been reported are true (6 yrs, $40MM), then it will be Coach Cal and his buddy Worldwide Wes.

Wow! That's a hell of a lot of money. I keep hearing "over $5 million a year," but that is damn near $7 million.

If Cousins and Wall go to UK and team up with Meeks and Patterson, UK might just be the team to beat next year. It wouldn't matter who the 5th player in the starting line up was.

Does anyone know if all of those recruits actually signed with Memphis? I know that there is a mechanism by which they can get out of their letter of intent without missing a season due to a coaching change, but I think it hinges on the original University releasing the kid. I'm not sure Memphis would go for that.
Also, I keep hearing that Meeks and Patterson are both leaving.

Wall hasn't committed anywhere yet and Cousins committed after the early signing period, so he hasn't signed his LOI yet. I don't know about the other 2009 Memphis recruits

My favorite part of this whole thing? Kentucky's state budget was so deep in debt ($456 million) that they had to raise the tax on cigarettes and alcohol. They raised the tax on bourbon in Kentucky!!
Which means that we learned that in the Commonwealth, the order of priorities are like this:
1) UK Basketball 2) Bourbon
Everything else

Good move by Calipari.
After all, it's not like he's leaving Conference USA to go coach in a more difficult league.
Ba-ZING!!!

Since we've played Calipari teams before, any chance of a home-and-home with UK? Watching the Hoyas dominate in Rupp Arena on CBS (or, even better, in person) would be pretty sweet.
