I can honestly say that when I saw the sportscenter highlights of yesterday's game with the Reds, the very first thing that I thought of was this thread.

Approximate top 7 Cubs players coming in to this year:
Ramirez, Soriano, Zambrano, Bradley, Lee, Soto, Harden
Five of them have missed time this year (Z just went on the DL; we get the Bobby Scales show for the next few days until Z's rotation spot comes up Friday). And I doubt anyone would wager that Soriano and Harden will make it through the whole season without missing time.
Maybe that, and not the lack of Plucky Mark DeRosa (.230/.301/.431), is why the Cubs have struggled so far this year?

Actually, apparently The Riot is the top Cubs player. Let's just hope that nobody comes out with a book about the sordid details of the LSU's glory days and The Riot's ass injections. Talk about a power surge.

Something that I could have said about the Red Sox not very many years ago. Thankfully they "solved" that problem, and now needn't concern themselves with my rooting for them. In a humbling sort of way, I still pull for the Cubs. But they could still solve that, with a rewarding couple of years ... OR ONE! |

Obviously its early, but Soto and Lee have really hurt them offensively to cancel out Fukudome's start, and the loss of Aramis will really hurt--especially given that he was by far the best 3B in the division and therefore a huge leg up for the Cubs.
On the pitching side, Dempster, Lilly, and Harden have all struggled with giving up the long ball--some of that should even out over time. The bullpen has struggled with home runs too, but the bigger problem has been control--they've given up 6+ BBs per 9 innings, the highest rate in MLB.
I expect Soto to come around and the pitching to improve a bit, and given that the NL again appears to be pretty weak across the board, it is difficult to see how the Cubs don't get back to the postseason assuming no further major injuries. Winning the division isn't the foregone conclusion it was on Opening Day and before the Aramis injury, but even if they don't do that (and they still have to be the favorite), competition for the Wild Card will be limited. Nobody out west is going to be relevant, so its basically between the Phillies/Mets non-division winner and 2 or 3 competitiors (Brewers, Reds, maybe St. Louis) in the NL Central.
Should be a competitive summer.

Big Dog, you may be right about the long term outlook in the Central. Then again, I'm not sure this version of my beloved Cubbies has much heart - - they could finish first, after they get healthy, as you suggest, but they could also finish third behind the Cards and your Brew Crew. Bad few days in St. Louis.

Question for all you Cubs fans:
Is Lou P. catching much heat? Is his seat getting slightly warm? I hadn't really thought about it, but Colin Cowherd was talking about how some guys are essentially above reproach and the Lou was one such guy. He pointed out that in 22 years as a manager he has a winning percentage of .504, barely above Five Hundred, and he only has the one World Series. Additionally, he has predominantly been blessed with a good payroll. Certainly the Yankees and now the Cubs have a good financial backing and even the Mariners were pretty well funded back in the day. The only team that didn't have a good payroll was the Devil Rays and while he was there, they totally sucked. As I consider all of these factors, I see his point. For some reason, he is sort of put on a pedestal, but his resume' arguably doesn't justify such treatment.
