Is it just me or is the super-hype noticeably more subdued this year? At least down here, there hasn't been nearly the level of super-discussion permeating the airwaves.
If it is a local/regional phenomenon, then I guess it could be due to a sort of burnout from the recent successes of the University. But even listening to National shows, there just doesn't seem to be that buzz in the air that would normally accomodate the nearly 2 weeks of buildup.
If, in fact, that is also true Nationally, then why do you think that is? Some have suggested that "the NFL" or even "pro sports in general" are losing popularity. If so, then the escalating salaries while the economy is doing so poorly has combined to rub a lot of people the wrong way. Joe six-pack simply can't afford the $100 tickets with the mandatory donations. He's also upset about the extra 1/2 cent sales tax so that a billionaire owner can have a new state of the art stadium built for him.
I'm curious if anyone else feels that same way?
Personally, I think it's a little simpler than that. Every year there has been some big story, and almost always featuring a "big market" team. The Chicagos, New Yorks, Bostons and LAs of the world certainly control the airwaves to a degree. Without any of those markets represented, I just think that the media isn't giving quite the attention to the Super Bowl that they normally do. We don't have the quest for perfection. We don't have the try for back to back. We don't have the marquee names like Peyton Manning and we don't have the microscope that accompanies teams from Boston and New York.
In any case, have any of you noticed the same thing and if so, why do you think that is?

No one outside of Pittsburgh and Arizona cares about this Super Bowl.

That's somewhat of the sense I get here. I have even asked a couple of friends what they were doing for the Super Bowl and heard responses like "when is it?" or "oh, that's right, the Super Bowl is this week isn't it."

I'm loving this Super Bowl match-up for two reasons:
Arizona beat the Seagulls so Philly is bitter; and
Pittsburgh is in so Philly is bitter
Somewhere that fat slob Ed Rendell is choking on his 14th hoagie of the day as he tries to make nice with Pittsburgh after spending the entire season fellating the Seagulls on Comcast.

Part of the reason is that the Cardinals have no national following, positve or negative. Few people "love" the Cardianls and proportionaly few "hate" them either. A lot of "Ehhh..."
It would (unfortunately) be the equivalent of the Texas Rangers in the World Series.

The viewing public was robbed of a Hail Mary to close the game. Warner didn't fumble the ball--he had the ball in his hand as it was going forward. Tack on the personal foul against the Steelers, and you had a legitimate 45-yard jump-ball situation to end the game. By my theory that either Fitzgerald or Boldin comes down with every jump ball, that non-review of the "fumble" cost the Cards the game.

Yes it did.
Re: the last play, Michaels was calling it a fumble too. I guess I don't understand the rule, since it was pretty clear to me that he was trying to throw - no different from the other fumble call that was overturned.
I thought the Cards got jobbed. Even the roughing the passer penalty was lame, given how Warner was getting hit harder by the Steelers after every play.

arizona did not get jobbed. warner fumbled. woodley knocked it out before the arm came forward. warner lost that game throwing that horrible pick late in the half. maybe now they will stop with the warner HOF nonsense.

I wouldn't say Arizona got jobbed, but at the end of Super Bowl, on a close call, don't you think the ref should at least go under the hood? And I would disagree about that being a horrible pick. It was a bang bang play that Harrison made a great jump on. (FWIW I think he should have been tossed for that punch in the second half).

I'm still traumatized by "The Boss" crotch bumping the cameraman at Halftime. After the moment I immediately turned to MTV Jams to see some half naked lovelies shaking it to get the "Boss Bump" out of my mind.
Great 4th quarter--but in typical era of media "Greatest Ever" declarations--it is being overstated. I thought the best player on field was Darnell Dockett and really got Cards back into it and Larry Fitzgerald did--what he does--and that is being great.
What I do not understand is the media taking shots at the Cowboys--who had nothing to do with this game? Who cares about Dallas? It's pretty sad that ESPN and my local newspaper can't even cover a Championship game without mentioning an overrated team that wasn't even in postseason. Although as I often do--I will defend Terrell Owens as the media was taking shots at him--and praising the "guys who just make plays" at position and "aren't distractions". I thought media was supposed to report FACTS--and if so--ask Larry's girl how she feels about getting her butt whupped and "ex" drug dealer turned recreational user Santonio Holmes about their off the field exploits. Holmes issue just went away for some reason--remember he was caught with dope during season and nothing has been mentioned of that, and in Fitzgerald's case--he's got some domestic violence issues to deal with. So next time media tries to make a point--be careful who you compliment and who you disparage. Worst thing about Owens--he's a selfish, arrogant, jerk, but he's not in trouble off the field with the law and never has been.
