WVU lost Da'Sean Butler to his fourth foul very early in the second half with the margin still in single digits. They then proceeded to rip off a scoring run that at one point CBS had at 21-4...and it definitely got worse from there. WVU is also playing w/o Joe Mazzula for a extended period with a shoulder injury.
Possibly the best 10 minute or so stretch of team basketball I've seen yet this season. WVU absolutely carved up OSU's defense with passing, good off-ball movement, and excellent shooting from any gap in the defense they wanted. It was really just a continuation of what they'd done the entire game-- in the first half, WVU had an awesome bounce pass to a baseline cutter under the basket who in one motion threw a behind the back bounce pass to a cutter backdoor for a dunk.
Not a bad comment on the strength of the conference when the preseason 8th or so BE team can go on the road and do that to one of the top Big Ten teams.
On the other side of the conference meanwhile...posted this in the other thread, but Rutgers' next three games are against the Top 3 ranked teams: at UNC, Pitt, at UConn...then they throw in Marquette and Syracuse.

I had been pretty sure Ohio State was among the most overrated teams in the country, but the WVU loss encouraged me to take a look at what they had done to get here, and victories over Miami(FL) and Notre Dame in ugly, B10-style games along with the WVU game comprise the entirety of their OOC schedule, with only Illinois and Purdue projected to be better in conference. Looks like it's gonna be a sad, sad winter in B10 country.

I have never thought thad matta was a great coach- excellent recruiter but who has he developed? Oden was injured and even when he played he did not dominate offensively- it was his defensive presence. Kosta Koufous and him did not get along from what i hear. And now BJ Mullens - who some are calling the most overrated number 1 recruit ever....or is it that matta has no idea how to use big men? i honestly do not know.

People who call BJ Mullens the most overrated #1 recruit ever simply have no sense of history, have an agenda or are idiots (or all three). Oden developed fine over the course of a single season. Koufous did fine for his ranking as well. Did Pops suck at developing big men because Duane Spencer wasn't any good?
Matta won at Butler, won at Xavier and now has won at Ohio State. It took three freshman declaring for the NBA to cause him to miss the first NCAAs he's missed when his team was eligible. (His first year at OSU they were on probation).
And when they did that, they won the NIT, meaning there's a good chance they should have been in the NCAAs.
Yes, Butler and Xavier have been machines in their conferences recently, but his only year at Butler set a then record number of wins for them, and at Xavier he won 26 games three times, which is tied for second in Xavier history.

No need for name-calling... He didn't look good last night. We'll see how his season goes, but he's not looking like a #1 or a draft pick right now. Of course, that could change in the second half of the season.

WVU looked great against an overrated OSU team. Now, if only Rutgers could take care of UNC...

I'm not sure the final 4 was coaching as much as execution.

Matta is a very good coach. However, it is silly to say that he "out-coached" III in the 2007 Final Four. OSU simply executed better than Gtown, and the best player for the Hoyas had a very mediocre game. Like almost every basketball game, the game was decided by the players, and coaching was not a major factor.

Jeff was not a non-factor because of coaching. He had plenty of touches but deferred to his teammates constantly instead of taking shots or driving when they were there. I'd agree if OSU had been able to keep the ball out of Green's hands but that did not happen.

It really is amazing how many calls UNC and specifically hansbrough get on the interior. If he misses it is assumed to be a foul.
Rutgers shooting well but they don't have the basketball IQ to stay in this game methinks...would love to see them keep it tight but UNC now up 9 with a few minutes left in the half.

I agree Matta has a great history of winning teams. But IMO there is more to coaching and i reserve the label "great coach" for a select few. alot of coaches win for alot of different reasons. My main critique of Matta is his lack of development of big men. I saw Oden and Koufos in high/school/college and they did not get better offensively in college. now in Matta's defense one could say Greg had that hand injury making offensive development difficult. But Oden is great b/c of his physical presence/defensive difference making capabilities. he has not yet developed any sort of reliable offensive game. Koufos and Matta did not get along and it got near ugly over there- just saying what i am hearing. maybe it is false i do not know. I have no problem with Koufos' ranking. I am just saying he did not develop under Matta and alot of people agree with that....including Koufos. Regarding Mullens, i will wait and see. Other have called him overrated and after seeing him multiple times now i agree that he should NOT be the number 1 overall recruit. but only time will tell. Who knows-- maybe henry sims will have a better collegiate/pro career than mullens.
And the reason i made a point about matta/big men is b/c he seems to get alot of elite big men recruits-- albeit from the local area that he has dominated for years. This is just surprising to me b/c i do not consider him a big man coach.
Comparing Pops and Thad Matta is laughable when you are talking about big man development- but i know SF was being sarcastic
I don't think SFHoya was calling me idiot since i am not the one calling Mullens the most overrated recruit of all time. But I also usually do not call people who i do not know idiots.
Well, it is arguable if Matta outcoached JT3 in that final four but i can tell you for sure that JT3 outcoached Matta the year before in the round of 32.

Other notes of interest: Florida jumped out to a 22-0 lead, in route to an easy 30 point win, 75-45, over the Winthrop Eagles.
OK, I lied. That game was incredibly boring and not of much interest -- AND I'M A GATOR FAN!
