Looks like SoS Hillary is just about official. I don't think it's going over too well with anti-war people, but as I said earlier, I don't think it's the worst appointment in the world (notwithsanding my general anti-Clintonian comments). I wonder if Gov. Patterson will now name the recently cleared skated Eliot Spitzer to replace her? My money's on Andrew Cuomo. Yogi Berra?

Ed is on a roll. I think, though, that Yogi is a resident of NJ, not NY, thus eliminating the possibility of the appointment of the century. No chance this goes to Spitzer. That's about as likely as the reemergence of Al D'Amato. Make that two votes for Cuomo.

There are only 16 women in the Senate (15 nee Hillary) - the chances this seat goes to a man are pretty low.

If pressure is put on Patterson to pick a woman, then I think he will pick Congresswoman Nita Lowey. This would be a good pick because Congresswoman Lowey would probably serve the remainder of the term and bow out so that the other contenders could have a primary. Does anyone know New York's interim appointment rule? (Would the appointed Senator serve the 4 years remaining or just 2 years before having to campaign again?) Congresswoman Lowey was on track to be the nominee in 2000 but graciously supported Senator Clinton and did not run a primary campaign.

OK, just so you guys know...I was, in fact, joking about Spitzer.

Hope Patterson does not feel constrained to pick someone who actually lives or has lived in New York.

That's funny. I thought ed was making a joke about Bill Clinton there, since there have been some rumors about him vying for that seat (I don't know how real any of those rumors are).
I never even thought about the "other" William Jefferson. I guess I assumed he was in prison already.
Hopefully, for all our sakes, we won't have to worry about Jefferson for too long. This Cao guy might have a chance against him.
(OK, maybe not, but I think we can all agree that Jefferson should not be serving in elected office at any level; he should be serving 5-7.)

Thanks bubbrubbhoya for the link. Unfortunately I was referring to William Jefferson of Louisiana.
