Funny you should mention that...... George Allen Announces for SenateHe'll have a primary challenge, but I expect him to win that. The interesting thing will be the uncertainty right now as to whether the guy he lost to in 2006 is going to seek re-election. (He probably will, but there are some rumors out there; Webb hasn't really endeared himself to any one party or constituency...possibly the sign of a good Senator, actually, now that I think about it.) Also, can I ask a question of the board re: Rahm Emanuel? First, I think the decision today is kind of stupid. I'm no Rahm Emanuel fan, God knows, but it seems silly to say that the guy has to give up his residency because he spent a couple of years working at the White House. (Hey, Chicago: it's a little late in the game to try to convince the rest of the country that you strictly abide by rules and standards!) My question is that the ruling said that he couldn't put his name on the ballot. But does that actually mean he can't run? It's probably an academic question more than anything. Lisa Murkowski aside, he probably can't run and expect to win as a write-in, so unless the State Supreme Court overturns this decision (unlikely), I don't expect he'll try something like that. I was just wondering whether he could if he wanted to.

(Hey, Chicago: it's a little late in the game to try to convince the rest of the country that you strictly abide by rules and standards!) The fact that these two appellate court judges were apparently insufficiently bribed and/or intimidated proves beyond any reasonable doubt that Rahm lacks the chops to be Mayor of Chicago. As for your specific questions, the appellate court seems to draw a distinction between losing your residency for voting purposes and not meeting the residency requirement established for candidates for electoral office. They freely admit though that there's no Illinois SC precedent for a ruling in either direction, so it essentially asks to be politely overturned. As for the write-in option, the ruling states that Rahm needs to be removed from the ballot because he is not eligible to hold the office. A successful write-in campaign shouldn't change the fact of his ineligibility.

I agree with Bos on Rahm. As much as I disagree with him, he went to Washington to serve the President and should not be penalized in Illinois for doing that.

I don't think there are too many liberals who would be upset by the Rahm decision. He was naive enough to bring the DLC model to the White House, reached out across the aisle, etc. during his tenure as Chief of Staff. The result was watered down legislation and gridlock, not to mention wholesale defeat of conservative Democrats in the 2010 congressional elections.
We have him to thank for this dialogue about when the WH will "pivot" as if the same could or would be asked of Hill Republicans.

I think this quote from Rahm says it all:
“I still own a home here, (I) look forward to moving into it one day[.]"
Hmmm, you'd think if you're not in the house then you don't actually reside in the city.

Actually, that's one of the strangest/funniest/"most Chicago-like" maybe? parts of this story. From what I understand, Emanuel rented out his home to a fellow politician when he assumed his COS position. When he tried to move back, the tenant, Rob Halpin - who also wanted to run for mayor at one point - said he wouldn't vacate. Can't make this stuff up. In another unlikely twist, Jesse Jackson has applauded the court's decision. Hmmm, I wonder if Jesse Jackson might be backing Carol Moseley Braun for Mayor? (or his son, but I don't think his son is running; I know he considered it)

I know nothing about law, but this appears to be quite unfair. Harsh penalty to pay for national service.

And a harsh penalty for people in Chicago to pay--there's a reason Rahm is a 20 point favorite right now. There are multiple posters on my Hoyatalk ignore list that are more qualified to be mayor than most of the rest of the field. Oh, and hey, look at this! www.chicagotribune.com/news/elections/ct-met-slated-judges-20110124,0,3891974.story

I admit that I am bummed that Pence is not running. I think he would have made a good candidate. Pence/Ryan2012 had a nice ring to it. He'll win the Indiana governorship in a walk is that's what he chooses to do. I wonder if there was any conversation between him and Mitch Daniels before this decision. Something along the lines of: "Are you running?" "I don't know....are you running?" "Well, I'm not gonna' run if you're gonna' run!" "Well, I'm not gonna' run if you're gonna' run!" "So....rock, paper, scissors?"

When in doubt, go with the governors.
Romney, Pawlenty and Daniels are probably the Republicans with the best chance of winning the nomination. I'd include Huckabee & Barbour except, in the end, I don't think they'll run. And, as I've said many times, neither will Sarah Palin.
And, yeah, add non-governor John Thune, since is is just so ruggedly handsome! ;D
I think this whole "No one has declared yet...OH NO!! The Republicans are lost!!!" is much ado about nothing.
There's plenty of time.
The Republicans' real challenge is not that. It's what bando said: Unseating a sitting President is historically very difficult.
