Starks and Thornton were the only 2010 guards invited to last year's Midnight Madness, so I do believe the staff preferred the two of them over guys like Atkins, Marshall, Traynham etc. Different people have different opinions on whether Thornton or Starks is the better player, and IIRC Rivals has Starks ahead while Scout puts Thornton ahead. Either way it's close but I've always thought that Starks made more sense for us just because he's got so many offensive skills, whereas Thornton is "a gamer" but has issues with his shooting, a skill that I think is pretty important for a Georgetown guard. So yea, I definitely think this is a good pickup for us and while all these DC area guards figure to be nice players eventually I think this is a great fit for our team.
In addition to the fact that Starks is a top 50 player, this is a good pickup for us because we were in need of another ball handler, somebody who will take over at the point after Wright (Clark can do it some extent but is more of a combo; in response to Strummer's analogy earlier I'd say that a better one might be Wallace : Sapp :: Wright : Clark). Now that we've landed Starks and filled that need, we can go ahead and gamble by putting all of our focus on some of the cream of the crop (ie Roscoe Smith). Especially when you consider that everything with 2009 will probably wrap up in the next few weeks because Vinson and Kelly will be deciding... as soon as those things happen we'll have a pretty good idea of what our needs are going forward (if any) and how many scholarships we'll have, and that means we can really narrow our focus to a few elite targets like possible Smith, Morris, or Barton, or maybe Harris/Lubick if Kelly goes elsewhere.

Agreed RBHoya... its crucial that our littles have the ability to drain the open three.
I was just checking out Scout's top 100 prospects for 2010 and while I know recruiting sites aren't always reliable... its interesting to note that of their top 15 players...7 have yet to commit. Of those 7, 4 list Georgetown as a school if interest. Could be another great recruiting class at the hilltop.

Great news and foundation for the '10 class -- how great is this quote from the Scout article: “When you step on that campus you just know"

Assistant coach David Cox deserves alot of credit. I love the line in the Post article about other coaches calling D. bryant angry. I think we got a really good point guard who will make other players want to come here.
ID- yeah at first glance Travis Best came to mind. Also Charles Smith. I haven't seen the kid play though.

Wow, I guess we don't have to wait to picture what he would look like in a G'town uniform.
I didn't know the Little Hoyas had our exact jerseys, that is awesome!

Doing my once/twice a week offseason check of the site and was pleasantly rewarded today!! Congrats to the staff and to Markel Starks for making a great choice.
One of the best parts about coming to this board is the GREAT info we get about these new players from people who really know about them....sounds like this will be a great signing. The future continues to look bright for the Hoyas!!

Unless Prep can somehow convince the WCAC to admit them, they are always going to have an uphill battle in attracting the area's top talent. The IAC is killing them.

Prep freaking stinks. If it wasn't for Roy and the Jesuits, that school would be a swear word to me.

Welcome to the Hoya family Mr. Starks. Markel is a superior offensive player to Thornton(I luved Thornton's Defense and moxy). For the Gtown system, Starks is much better for the offense because he will knock down the open jumper(something I said Thornton would REALLY have to improve on even before he committed elsewhere).
The good thing about Starks is that he is playing for the right HS coach to show him how to improve his defense over the next 2 years before he gets to the hilltop. Starks is a bright kid, so I am sure he will absorb as much knowledge as possible before he graduates to the senior Gtown circuit.
