If you are in DC, the best place to go for beer is Chevy Chase Wine and Liquor up Connecticut. They have hundreds of bottles and sell everything by the single. Whole Foods also usually has a solid selection of craft beers. Also, the best website for craft beer is www.beeradvocate.com

I prefer ratebeer.com (they have a great trading page, as well), but BA is very good.

Has anyone ever had this beer? I'm not sure on the spelling, but I think it is called "Sammyclaus" or "Sammi-claus." As I recall, the story on it, was that it was only made once a year in Germany I think. It is a triple-bock that was just incredibly strong. It was one of maybe 2 or 3 beers in my life that I simply couldn't finish. I can't remember the exact % of alcohol, but it was really high ... maybe 20%. I, of course, still await the inevitable brewing of Skittlebrau. We tried to duplicate it one day in 1999 in Village A. Grabbed a case of Lowenbrau and a pound of Skittles. The beer still tastes half-decent. The half-dissolved skittles in the bottom were something else. Someday I may try it again with more aging.

I tried that with Sour Skittles. NOT a good idea. Though perhaps some of those new chocolate Skittles in a nice stout could work......

Green Flash Imperial IPA is like drinking buds. No joke. I'm not talking nasty bong water, I'm talking delicious, delicious nuggets. Will drinking it make me run out for an ill-advised late night trip to Gray's Papaya for some dogs (or to Ted's if I'm in your neck of the woods)? hm

Yeah - I had this a few years ago when the brewer (Austrian, not German) came to the Brickskellar one fine November night to show off his wares. And I definitely agree that it had almost a "thick" wine after taste. Not quite port, but very close. Of course, drinking a 23% ABV beer after sampling 6 other beers that night made for a helluva next morning...

We had a couple 22's, and about half way through the first, we knew the night was going to turn into one of those "turn on some good music, get some food, relax and enjoy the beer" nights. Not quite a stoner night listening to String Cheese Incident and eating box after box of Hot Pockets, but you get the idea. It is freakin' fantastic. I filled a growler of Pumking last night in preparation for tonight's festivities (its Thursday, why not?). I will report back with even more glowing praise for this fine brew tomorrow...

Buffalo - I see you mentioned Three Floyds. Absolutely love their stuff - definitely one of my favorite micros. Dreadnaught is one of my favorite beers period. Hoppiest thing in the world and just amazing.
Unfortunately they don't distribute too much on the east. Brickskeller used to have several of their beers on their menu, but they've taken it off the last couple times I've been there. Also two places that I knew of in Philly that used to have their stuff (Monks, Foodery) don't have it anymore.
Anyone in DC or the east coast in general familiar with them and know if they distribute anywhere out here anymore?

Tasting at our local awesome beer store last night. A few highlights:
Rogue Glen Ale - they only make it once a year and even then it is only distributed to a small number of customers, but if you even see this anywhere... BUY IT. Great blend of an American pale ale and a scotch ale. Absolutely delicious.
Rogue DOUBLE Dead Guy - if you like Dead Guy like I do, you're going to love this take on their flagship Maibock. Put simply, its an imperial version of Dead Guy. Hints of toffee and caramel, sweet aroma, and the hop content to adequately balance out the heavier-than-Dead-Guy maltiness. Very good.
Boulder Cold Hop - pours nice, sweet-but-not-too-sweet aroma... almost like peaches and flowers. Medium bodied, easy texture, nice and hoppy. My cousin made an observation it had hints of the aforementioned peaches, but also grapefruit and a mellow bread taste.
Southern Tier Harvest Ale - a hoppy yet wheaty beer, much like a traditional ESB. I've had it many times before, but not in the past year or so, I'd say. It was good to rediscover this one, like a mellow version of the SUPER hoppy Green Flash Imperial IPA I talked about earlier in this thread. Again, like drinking sweet, sweet buds... but a lot less "chewy" than the Green Flash and with a citrus zest in there for taste.
and
Michigan Brewing Screamin' Pumpkin Spiced Ale - I know I praised Southern Tier Pumking to the heavens as the best pumpkin ale out there... but my lord this was better. You're literally drinking pumpkin chiffon (sp?) pie. All this beer needs is a dollop of whipped cream on top to be the perfect libation. I'll rate this a quadruple A++++++++ super buy.

What's wrong with calling an awesome, delicious pie by its correct name? There's "pumpkin pie" and there's "pumpkin chiffon pie." Completely different recipes I'm told (having never actually made a pie as I'm purely a mass consumer), completely different tastes... the beer I had last night was more like the latter.
Am I missing something?
And what is this cheerleader's thread you speak of?
Anyway, back to beer...
EDIT: Nevermind... I just looked up what "chiffon" actually is. Regardless, I still stand by my use of the correct gastronomic term.

Slightly off topic: another beer that I really like is Grolsch but I was extremely disappointed with the Grolsch Blonde. Has anyone had that and what did you think? I guess it's possible that I got a bad batch, but I was really disappointed.

I think my favorite beer may be Aventinus by G. Schneider & Sohn. 8.5% abv and not terribly overpriced where I've seen it. I don't have the skills to describe it any other way than "really Editeding good." It even has a wikipedia page: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aventinus_(beer)

One thing I really miss living overseas is the chance to try some of the craft brews that are now available in the U.S. On my trip home this summer, I was particularly impressed with Otter Creek stout, Black Dog Ale and Brooklyn Brown. Too bad I didn't have more time.
